I've always used a simple boon writer, but I never really liked them (and hence rarely use a swami). I have two undernail writers, but I have a rather nasty habit of biting my nails....
On that note, I've considered trying out a band writer for a bit (just type it in on Amazon).

That was a great read, thanks I am considering purchasing a swami gimmick as well, I have had good success with normal thumb tips so I think the TT versions are the way to go although nailwriters do seem appealing. From the recommendations on the forum, it looks like the pencil lead ones are more practical.

For those of you interested in a thumb tip swami gimmick that writes in ink, consider The Snake Charmer.

This is just my personal opinion but... Nothing is going to work any better than what you have just purchased from Carlyle. Although this is my opinion, if you read through the many threads on here you will see that it is also the same opinion that many others have as well. The Boon and Bug writers will not be anywhere near as stable on your thumb as the New Style Thumb Writer. They feel like they are always about to fall off your thumb and rock around like they are doing a balancing act on a ball(your thumb tip). I think you will wind up feeling like you have spent money for nothing after you get them and try them... I know I did. I've tried everything out there when it comes to this type of gadget and still from time to time have to purchase something to just see if it is any better and every time... I go right back to the Dr Crow Writer/New Style Thumb Writer. It's the very same writer that Bob Cassidy makes and uses... and that should speak volumes ! |

You right Taterini . Carlyle's tool is amazing and very useful . I was reading a lot good words also about Lincoln's Boon . It is magnetic and think could work also very good on close up and stage sytuation but not have this yet .

Just to keep the record straight- my friend Ed Carlyle sells his "New Style Thumb Writer" with my permission, since I'm the one who created it. It is identical to the Dr. Crow writer.

Ed Carlye is a good man.
After dealing with him recently, he will absolutely get any business I can give him. But not exclusively because he's a good chap. (Does not hurt though) He falls into the John Riggs catagory with quality, thought and practicality. (I'm just waking up, I won't expect a Pulitzer over this post) Anyway, I'm glad Bob points people to Ed. He's doing anyone a favor, that may not have been aware of Ed and his products.

I've had great success using Super Sharpie. Takes a bit of getting use to but otherwise works like a charm.

Richard Osterlind stated that he prefers a Swami gimmick nail writer.
Remove the flesh paint and it will fit easily under the thumb nail. Just like a silver thumbtip, it's invisible in skilled hands. Hope this helps!

Where do you guys think is the best place to buy swami gimmicks now in 2017/2018?
I have been looking around for 2 days and I can't find any affordable online store. Penguin is almost the only one, and it's 25 dollars and it takes a long time to deliver to Spain. Also, one review there says: "Love Penguin, but when other vendors sell something this fundamental for a fair price ($5.00) I have a hard time seeing the justification for this mark up." But I really can't find any other nail writer cheaper than penguin that can be sent to my country (Spain). Also, I didn't know The Snake Charmer. I think I'm going to buy it, but I can't really find how to order it on its website. |

Hi Gotrek! Welcome to the Café! I think I have the solution. I hope so anyway. You're asking for a glass of water, and I'm about to give you an OCEAN, to put this in perspective. The book: THE RESURRECTION OF DR. CROW BY BOB CASSIDY. I know of NO better Swami. Anywhere. I made two different kinds. A Listo and Sharpie. Here is the book:
