It is quite incredible. Though the work needed requires a lot of misdirection or proper management I think. Any other opinions on doing the dirty work? Perhaps this is for inner secrets...

You can find a review for this effect along with many others at http://www.martinsmagic.com. I have found his reviews extremely helpful.

The effect is a reputation maker. I remember the buzz that went through at FISM in Haagh when it was demonstrated.
It's very difficult to do however. Not that it requires sleight of hand - it doesn't. But it requires a huge amount of misdirection. It's very cool, but not for everyone. |

Predicta reminds me of a trick that was out long time ago by a guy, I think, from Spain. It involved a spectator signing a playing card and then that card was actually torn and destroyed or vanished and reappeared in some impossible location with the spectator's signature on it.
While it required no sleight-of hand (except for the vanish or whatever you chose to do with it,) it did require a different kind of work and management. But, if you took the time to set it up and do it, it was a killer effect. A very good friend of mine, Chris Korn (now on Mondo Magic,) fooled a lot of people over here in the U.S. with it when it was fresh from FISM and relatively unknown over here. Most magicians on this site seem to be very concerned over a few dollars, so keep in mind that this is a trick that needs replacements. Once you've used all the lottery tickets provided, you need to buy a new set. I don't know if they sell replacements separately or at a lower price. |

The Effect.
This is the routine that is supplied with the trick. You ask a spectator to call out 4 numbers between 1 and 99. As they do this you write the numbers down on a piece of paper. You then show them the paper and ask them to confirm that they were indeed the 4 numbers that they freely picked. After they confirm you tell them that beforehand you had a premonition and bought a lottery card. You take a sealed envelope and tear it open. Inside the envelope they will find a “lottery style” scratch card. You ask them to scratch off and reveal the 4 numbers, which are of course the exact 4 numbers that they had just picked. This is an alternate routine as suggested by alakazam. You tell the spectator that you are going to do a little esp. type experiment with numbers. You hand them a pen and a piece of paper with 4 squares drawn on it. (This is one square with a cross in the middle). You then draw a similar 4 squares on your own piece of paper. You ask them to name out loud a number between 1 and 99 and then to concentrate on one of the squares. As they do this you write the chosen number in one of your own squares and then instruct the spectator to write the number in the square that they were thinking of. This is repeated until all 4 squares have a number. You then hand them your piece of paper for comparison, which inevitably you will not have got correct. This is not important, although every so often you may just get lucky. You tell them that you have a funny feeling about the numbers that they selected, and take a wallet out of your pocket. From the wallet you take a lottery style scratch card and hand it to them. When they scratch off and reveal the 4 numbers they are of course the exact 4 numbers that they had been freely chosen. Difficulty. 3/5 1=Even I can do it, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used, 4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only) Remarkably simple. Review. I love mentalist tricks as there is just so little pressure. If they go wrong you can always blame it on the spectator for not concentrating hard enough . This is in my opinion one of the strongest mentalist tricks that I have ever seen. It just seems so impossible. The lottery style card can be handed out as a souvenir afterwards. The numbers on the card are printed. They are not written in freehand and there are no number forces. The spectator really does get to choose four numbers between 1 and 99. Personally I prefer the alternate handling, as I think it has better misdirection and anyway, I actually like tricks that appear initially not to have worked, but in reality have that “kicker” ending. Of course if you actually guess correct with the squares then even better. Two tricks in one. This is a mentalist trick that is a little different. It is fresh. If you like mentalist tricks anyway – then definitely go for it, and if you don’t then this is a very easy to do and very impressive trick that may just make you change your mind. If anything, my only complaint about this trick is the price. It isn’t cheap, and further more after 20 performances you will need to buy the refills that aren’t cheap either (£24.99 for 20), but that is my one and only criticism and for me personally it is still good value for money. Rating. Effect/item: 10/10, Quality of goods: 10/10, Value for money: 7/10 Bottom Line. Even at the price I would buy it again. It is great for that one (and yes, I am going to say it) "Reputation Maker" that can be used at the end of any performance. |

Nana,
I suppose one could get at least 2 out of the four numbers relatively close if you wanted if you ask as you go along..... I just keep thinking there must be a better performance cover for the work that goes on - I showed the final card (which I kept as a souvenir after a magish performed it for me) to some lay people and they freaked. It is so deeply impossible....I *love* the idea, just wanna clean it up a little. |

I've had problems with getting the laminate even and wrinkle free. I like the effect though if done properly.

I suppose one could get at least 2 out of the four numbers relatively close if you wanted if you ask as you go along Initially I was fairly hung up with wanting to get the 4 numbers in the box phase of this correct, but now I truley believe that this effect is actually much better if that phase seems to fail. There are a few reasons for this. One is that if that phase was correct, then the second phase of producing the lottery ticket is so watered down that it loses much of it's impact. The way I do this now, is to sell the first part as an experiment in Psychic thought transference, that may or may not work. When that part doesn't work and I produce the lottery ticket the effect has moved to a much more bizarre coincidence style effect. Before I start the Psychic experiment I hand an envelope for another spectator to hold. This envelope is one of those that has a clear window on the front, and inside is the lottery ticket. I don't highlight the fact that there is a lottery ticket inside at all. It is enough that it has been held by the spectator throughout the entire effect. The envelope is of course a David Regal "Special Delivery" envelope, and so consequentally when it is handed back to me, it is relatively easy to pull out the prepared lottery ticket instead of teh one that is really in there. When the lottery ticket is produced, the specs believe that the experiment has already failed and that the lottery ticket is merely compensation. When the numbers are scrathed off and revealed no one even rembers about putting the numbers in the boxes. |

Yes good points. I've seen it done using Bob Kohler's black envelope. Not seen special delivery in action.

It would help if the gaffed lottery-type cards didn't have "PREDICTA," the actual commercial name of the effect, written on them. Nothing like giving the audience explicit guidance to look up the "trick" on the Internet!

I'm with tdowell - I can get the numbers without looking "fishy", but the laminate sometimes is wrinkled. Any tips?

I swear by this effect and use it to open at the table during walkaround.
I have honed the work in this effect so that I have time to work the sleights. At the end of the number writing I take my paper and place it face down on the table. I have the spectator do the same. I have the other spectator (the one calling out the numbers) turn over both papers at the same time (so that I don't touch them). As they are doing this I fold over the laminate so that it is even and slide it into the envelope. There is plenty of time to do this. Words of advice. Make sure you carry two markers (yours that comes supplied and a sharpie for the spectator), and don't forget to get the pen back at the end of the effect or the next table will miss out. I prepare as many setups as I have tables and keep them in the breast pocket of my coat. Before I approach the next table I pull one out and I am ready to go. S. Patrick |

PREDICTA is a great trick and I have done it at every single one of my shows. It's great close up and really great for stage. It really goes well with my mentalism show b/c my first effect is Richard Osterlind's Bank Night and with that bringing in lottery tickets when I get to PREDICTA it truely looks like I mess up when I dump out a scratch off card.
This trick however is not for everyone. |

They shouldn't have print "Predicta" on the lottery card. This is a big dissadvantage for the effect...
It makes avoid to give the card as a souvenir

After watching the video of the trick I ordered Predicta from Alakazam. It was out of stock originally and they only had re-fills available. After ordering the trick a couple of days ago I received it today, Sat 18 Dec, what a disappointment.
In the pack I received what looks like a multi generation photocopy of the instructions and a pack of Predicta cards. For £30 I thought they would have at least sent me a cheap billet type wallet instead of telling me to look at the photographs as to what type I would need to purchase. Unfortunately the quality of the photographs totally inhibits this. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has purchased this trick to find out if they received poor quality photocopied instructions. Total waste of money. Good trick shame about |
