Here is my review of the "Appearing 8 Foot Wand" available from Hocus Pocus (www.hocuspocus.com)...
Webpage description of product: Wow! You talk about a production that packs flat and plays big! It's the 8 Foot appearing Wand! Holy Cow! At any point in your act, the performer walks out on stage with a folded bag. Opening the bag, he proceeds to pul out not 4 feet, 6 feet, but a full 8-foot long appearing wand! Easy to perform and adaptable to any type of act, you'll find a zillion uses for this other than the standard production mentioned above! And what better way to announce that you are indeed a magician! My Review: I think this product is truly excellent! When I produce the wand from my pocket (or a paper bag) people are totally amazed. Next, they usually want to examine the wand and I feel happy in handing it over. No one I have showed has figured out how it works. They all try to twist or press it down (like the old telescopic type of products) but of course it doesn't work. The ultimate is when they are watching you get into your car to see what you do with the wand. I thread the 8 foot of wand into my car and drive off! If you are looking for a product that people will react to and remember then try the wand for $29.95. It's a bargain. |

Nice, can't belive the wand is examinable at the end.
BTW how small does it pack, will it fit inside a tophat? F. |

Is the reset fast?

It packs down very small... fits into a standard lunch sized paper bag easily.
As for the reset it takes about 20 seconds to do. You cannot reset in front of the spec as they will see how it works. People keep begging me to tell them how this works but I'll never tell. Did it again this morning for some accountants... they couldn't work it out either. These are some pretty smart guys too. They each examined it while I entertained. |

Sorry fengenroll forgot to answer your question:
Yes it will fit into a top hat/magicians hat. It takes up very little space when "packed flat"... you can choose to have it all packed down, or only some of the wand packed down with the end of the wand showing. When I get home I will measure and post the exact size. The wand when fully extended is 8 foot long and about 2 inches in diameter. |

This does work really well. I preface it by doing a small medium and then a big wand from the bag.
I call it the "Magic Wand From Bag Of Death Illusion". I would not however, hand this out for examination. Reasonably intelligent people who play with it the right way will discover the secret. Anyone who owns a tape measure reel can also figure it out. This is one of those props that plays real big, and then you put it aside with a joke "You should see my rabbit", and then go on to something else. S. Patrick |

Lol... I have given this to "reasonably intelligent people" many times. In fact I just came back from an electricians house and performed for his kids. If anyone would know he SHOULD of (he has things that fold up a similar way) but he didn't have a clue.
My father is a contractor builder and works with tape measures all day but he doesn't transfer that theory/knowledge to the wand. He just tries to twist it like everyone else does. I must admit that if anyone even looks like getting close to figuring it out I say "don't break the wand" and they back off. Guess it is all in the way you present it. I find that if you don't hand it over people are not impressed as they think it telescopes. |

I have a similar product, but I never thought about actually letting a spectator have a good look it it for fear of giving away the method, but what you say is true. I don't think that many spectators would have a clue. Thanks for pointing this out!

When I did the 10 ft pole the other day...I hefted it in both hands and tossed it to specs...sure it's not real wood but there was no way they could figure out how it got in the bag. Having them try and figure it out is more fun than doing the effect! Entertaining for me and them.
I think there needs to be about 8" to hide the method as you produce it...that's if it's a slow reveal. But if you fling it out, you can have less cover. Good stuff. A favorite.

After searching several posts I finally bought it, I'v had it for a week and I have to say this is great!
First time I practiced it using a paperbag and infront of the mirror I started laughing - cause it looks so wierd. Easy to do - easy to reset. F. |

Does this work like the 10 foot pole or the 8 foot straw concept?

A freind of mine uses the 8' and 10' straw in his act for kids. For the first request, he asks a volunteer to produce a straw from the change bag. and the 8' pops out amid much surprise & laughter. The magish says that the straw is too big. The next number also requires a straw, and another volunteer is asked to produce one, but the magish very explicitly says "Now remember....I DON'T want the straw to be the same size as THAT one!!" (motioning to the 8' straw.) Whereupon the 10' one is produced.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Are these similar to the Walsh Appearing Cane? Are they made of metal or plastic?
Thanks for the info. Mike

It's made out of plastic, so it's light weighted. Funny gag!!

When you store it, you need to store it opened up the full 8 feet at least the night before your performance -- however before you leave to go to the performance it can be "small" for several hours I think -- but to make it work effectively, you do need to keep it opened up at your house at least the night before you perform it
