Wanted to get the board's opinion on the Hot Rod you prefer to use. I have heard of:
Black Plastic Clear Plastic Brass Color Changing I am very interested in opinions on this last one. Thanks!

Personally, I like the Clear Plastic ones, and I have a full set of 6, one each for each color key.
This gives me two plusses; 1; I can repeat with a different spec and color. 2. I keep them all in different pockets so I can casually ask a favorite color, and if they happen to say one of my six, we have a revelation and near miracle as I start with that hot rod. I have had them for 10 years, and except for having to reglue a color stone in one, they have stood up well. The clear plastic does not scratch much and I drop them in pocket with coins, etc, and in fact the clear seems to polish itself nicely with wear. I like the look of the black one (I have one of those too..) but I like the innocent look of the transparent plastic and play it up. I dont have any of the changing ones, except for Ducheck stick that has miniature coins on it, and sort of changes to only the selected coin on both sides - fairly shown. But frankly, it is too much work when the ordinary Hot Rod is amazing enough to most folks. BroDavid

My favorite is a had made wonder I bought many years ago simply called the Walnut Rod. It has painted on spots that change colour on all four sides. I don't know who made it but I would love to find another as mine broke. I also loved the simple instruction sheet that came with it which said merely "If you don't know how this works then don't"
My second favorite is a classy metal rod I got off E-bay a couple of years ago. It only changes on two sides but looks a lot classier than the plastic ones

I have an idea for the clear hot rods.
Did you know that if you wrote backwards onto one of the sides the it will reflect the right way on the other side if you view it from top to bottom? So why can't someone make a prediction rod with two cards on its side. One side will read lets say ace of clubs...you do the move. Same on each side. Still with me? The other well whatever card you want. These will have alot of potential. Jim

I have had the black hot rod for a while and am very happy with the way it has held up.

I have a hot rod called the Double Changing Hot Rod. I really like it and carry it with me pretty much everywhere I go. It's probably the same one Payne is talking about. It's brass, and changes 2 times, then can be handed out for examination(only in the end of the rountine though).
You can actually make it change 3 times in a sense if you want to make it a comical rountine if you get my drift, but you can actually only make it change 2 times on the rod. I really like it and highly recommend it. By the way, I bought it off ebay. If you want to know who to get it from let me know and I'll tell you but I'm pretty sure you can find it at some magic shops though. Just my 2 cents.. Mack Magic

As the proud owner of a bunch of different kinds of "hot rod" effects, I use the brass "double color change" model the most. I use the first part as a blowoff leading to teaching the difference between MAGIC and a TRICK. It's great...it'll tick off the hobby magicians here as it's a supposed exposure, but lighten up.
I also have a "Golden Rainbow Stik", which is a 4 sided hot rod, and it's very nicely made in brass like the other one. Both are great. Steve Thomas |

Hot Rod has, and always will, look like a toy. Laymen immediately suspect there is a switch on the rod, or a the gems are some sort of mood stones or color changing stones. Getting a metal one so it appears classy seems like an inherently futile goal since it will still look like a toy. Why would you cary a rod with colored spots on it? Is there a real world equivalent that would make sense for you to have, without being just a "magicians toy" ? For the record, I like hot rod, and perform it all the time. I just have to play devils advocate from time to time.

Has anyone purchased the "dots a lot" rod?
Ad says: 3 complete double sided changes. Looks like a good switchout for the brass double change rod.

I like the clear plastic one.
I carry that around and even hand it out afterwards... The double change brass is also nice, but I think that the gems get a better response on the clear one. |

I have the black one now. Am upgrading most of my things to higher grade versions. What about the "Dots Alot" rod?

The brass Double Change Hot Rod is the exalted royal majesty of all Hot Rods. It's examinable, enough said. I really think it's funny that this burger can dance.

I carried a black single color for years and truly enjoyed it, when it broke I moved to the two color brass model and have also had a great time with this one. I ran into the same problem Geoff was expressing however came up with what I believe is a unique take on the "why" question. I lean towards the bizzare and though a bit corney I explain this is actually a thermometer of sorts used by vampires to tell wether or not it is safe to drink from a victim... its different colors but when placed in a hand or touched to skin it changes color... green is gangenous blood... black is the plauge (it was relevant when vamps used it) yellow is jaundice... white is another vamp... blue (the first force color) is for innocents and ofcourse red (the second force color) is for those safe to drink... this makes for a little dark fun in jest of innocents etc...
Im curious as to what everyone thinks of this handling and approach, let me know. thanks, Wil.

Do you think is a good idea to hand the hot rod out for examination after the trick? Change it to the one color, then change one side and hand it out... I'm talking about the regular kind, not the brass kind.

I have several different ones made of exotic woods. My favorites are made of black walnut, but the teak ones look really great too. I have seen them marketed elsewhere but I don't know by who.
I had mine custom made for me. they are very classy looking and do not look like toys. If anyone is interested in purchasing one or a set send me a private message and we can work out an arrangement. |

I'm glad that Philemon and Will have been thinking about presentation! Up to now, I've always steered clear of this effect, since, as Geoff pointed out, it looks so unlike anything a lay audience has come in contact with -- which immediately casts it as a suspicious prop.
Does anybody else have presentational reasons for carrying around the ***ed thing? You just might persuade me to get one after all. P.S. This one sure looks purty. http://www.sterlingmagic.com/whatsnew.html
