Neil,
That is the one that I use. It looks "purdy", and has a nice weight to it. I say that I travelled to the Middle East and saw a jeweler using one to display different types of gemstones. The way it looks, gives the story legitimacy. I don't usually hand them out at the end, but sometimes in the middle of my routine. i end with a vanish of the rod.(cigarette vanish).

The cigarette vanish is always very effective; I've found that the old Jack Miller hot rods were the best for this, given their size, and shaping (broader across the top than the sides).
Jack, I'm told, has passed on, however...but Ronjo makes hot rods that are made almost exactly to his specifications. I'm pretty rough on mine...gems come out, and I even misplace a few, so it's good to know there's a reliable source. BTW, I prefer the clear hot rods...I tell people you can see right through them, kind of like my patter.
Cheers,

Hmmmm...the best Hot Rod?...Gotta say a '67 Chevy Chevelle with a bored 327, fully Blown and of course tha 4 Speed Muncey Rock-Crusher Tranny as well as a....huh.....oh...
sorry...the CLEAR kind. I have had mine for years. No fancy stories just clean SLOW moves. Philemon, GREAT IDEA!! I may use that if you don't mind? Very Logical solution to a goofy prop. By the way Chessmann, if you use the standard Paddle Move, throw the Hot Rod away and forget it.That move looks more like a Trick than a Chrome plated LED blinking logo embossed Hot Rod If your interested in a more natural cleaner move, PM me and I will type it up for ya! Hey folks, Due to multiple requests, I have made an AVI (video file) Showing my Hot Rod "move" which you can find on my website http://www.wolfsmagic.com/
On my Front Page, Click on WHAT's NEW, Click on TIPS, Scroll down to Wolf's Hot Rod Move then download the file. It is 1 mg so I hope ya have DSL, Sorry Is this move ORIGINAL?? Heck, I have NO IDEA! I am sure someone else has thought of it and tagged it as theirs but it is Original to me as I remember when I thought of it 15 years ago. Let me be clear, the SECRET MOVE is the SAME, it is the handling I have changed. The video file shows the move being done faster than I normally do it due to time limitations creating the video using my digital camera. So try it abit slower. Either way, for those who do not know of it, I think it is a big help in getting RID of that tired old elbow bent out wrist twister "natural" Hot Rod move of the Old Days. Hope this helps! Chance Wolf

Here is a GOOFY but effective line/move so you may pass the rod out for examination...I shake the Hot Rod while stating " I am going to LEAVE it at it's HALF-WAY point of Transition, see if you can finish it up"
Sounds silly but it only amazes them more as they inspect it to death! Hope this helps, Chance

I make my own rods, with five, rather than six, gems. (It makes for a more logical force.)
I have described the rod, variously, as a jeweller's device for judging the quality of gems (the spectator selects her favorite and they all turn to that gem), and as a type of dowsing stick used by (fill in the name of your favorite bizarre group). When you are near (whatever it is you are looking for) the stones change to the selected one. As a final move, I "change" it halfway and leave it with the spectator to examine. If the audience wants to examine any prop, then it's going to be this one! So you might as well be prepared for it. (BTW, Chance, I followed your instructions but the Tips section isn't open.) |

Best Hot Rod I've found yet is Dragster! It's so good that it fooled me the first time I held it in my hand and saw it change! When I realized what was happening, it was even better. There's no moving parts to wear out. And it will fool those in the know.
Here is the Café link that talks about it: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......8ad5352c It's CLEAR and yet its spots change color on ALL FOUR SIDES. Check it out, watch the video and get it. It's available on the Hocus Pocus website. Just do a search for "Dragster" Craig |

Hello
Two of my favorite paddle effects are jumping gems and quadra rod. Jumping gems is black plastic and silver gems with one red. Quadra rod is an item I bought for $10 at a club auction a few years back and what a jewel. With Quadra Rod you actually show colored gems on 4 sides of the rod or paddle. It is pretty ingenius prop, very pretty and professional in appearance. Unfortunately I am not sure if they are made any longer. Have a nice day, Walking Bob in Iowa |

I have 2 black plastic hotrods that I purchased from Penguin in a kit with DVD for like $11. I didn't expect much, and didn't get much in the way of hotrods, But the DVD was well worth more than I paid for the entire kit. Now, I am glad I bought the kit, 'cause I love the DVD, but I am planning to buy a brass hotrod. My local magic club is having a "swap and sell" next month at our meeting. Maybe I'll get lucky!!!

The chrome hot rod by Precision Magic looks really nice. Anyone have one? If so, what are your thoughts in terms of pros and cons? I'm curious if the chrome plating chips easily.

Although technically not a hot rod, Daryl's Dicey Dots exploits the hot rod methodology in an amusing way. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it before now.

I am also thinking about getting a chrome one. If it is of the same quality as the black one it should be fine. My wife and I are planning to visit Gatlinburg, TN next year and I plan to look for their shop (if they have one open to the public) since they are located there.

My favorite is the brass RAINBOW hotrod. unlike the other hodrods that change two times, this one changes 4 times. I'll have to dig out the instructions that came with it to see who made them. if I remember correctly, they were made in limited quantities. this is a great magician fooler imo.

I just got one of the black hot rod's from Precision Magic and it's pretty darn nice. Good weight, nice length, and seems to be very well made. It's a bit of a jump in size (width) from the Double Change Brass Hot Rod I've been using, but it seems to have it's definite advantages.

Okay, now that I've spent some time working with the Precision Magic Hot Rod I feel I can give a more informed review. Simply put: It rocks! Like I said in my previous post, it's thicker than a lot of other hot rods, but the more I work with it the more I like it. Roll over moves are much, much easier. Plus this baby is built to last...Aircraft aluminum. I dinged it a couple times dropping it (whoops) and the silver underneath started showing through, but all it took was a couple dabs with a black Sharpie and I was back in business.
