I have asked this question before within this Forum, but alas, had no response.
However, when I saw the Tv series "Magic" this week - which broadcasts on UK Tv on BBC2, at 8pm, on a Saturday - I felt compelled to try again.

The program theme this week was automatons. Which inspired my interest to re-post my original thread.

It all centres around an automaton which appeared on the Paul Daniel's UK magic show. Which screened on the BBC, many years ago.

From what I can remember - a stand, which housed a miniature painter's easel, is seen on display. Then the automaton is placed upon the stand.
As he "comes to life", he starts to dip the brush into the paints, and paint upon the canvas. He repeats dipping the brush into the paints, and rotating the canvas upon the easel.
It is a fairytale to behold. Yet, the picture he creates looks more like scrawl. Until, upon completion, he rotates the canvas yet again, and now it is apparent he has indeed excelled himself.

Someone, somewhere, must know the performer who owned this automaton.
I would love to see this performed again.
Please, anyone out there who can help with any information?

I think Psycho was the Kellar automaton. John Gaughan + Jim Steinmeyer wrote a book on it. John is THE guy to ask about automatons.

Good Luck,
Kevin

Psycho played whist,he was created by those two scallwags Maskelyne and Cook in 1865, in his older days he was named Yorick and owned by a Signor Boz. The only automaton I know of which painted pictures was Zoe,who appeared at Eygptian Hall not long after Psycho. Her method of working was less mysterious than Psycho's.
Although it was an ingenious principle. She could apparently draw pictures on request! I say no more...Professer Hoffmann has some in depth comments on both.
'though it stands to reason that a samurai should be mindful of the Way...it would seem that we are all negligent.
