I want to start using a Mini Disc player to control the music in my show but I need some advice.
I want one that will be compable with a VSM down the road. For now, I just plan to hook it directly to my PA. What I need to know is, 1.After I hit play, is there a way to make it stop after that track or will I have press stop manually. 2. After the track has stopped playing will the unit power off or stay on (I want one that will stay on to reduce access time) 3. when I hit stop, will it go back to track 1, or stay where it is so I cna hit "next" and "Play"? If someone can answer these questions that would be great. I am thinking about getting the Sony MZ-N510 Aaron |

I have the SONY MZ-N510, but any sony walkman will do. If you disarm the auto track advance it will stop after each track. The Walkman by itself will power off, but if you use a VSM it will prevent that and keep it on. it will stay where it is. I hope this helps.

The other advantage of Sony MD (depending on the model) is that you can turn off the BEEP function. That means when you change volume, track,... the public will not hear any beeps. On other brand, it is not always possible.

How is the best way to record the songs onto a mini disc?

Hello- Aaron,
Matthew answered your question correctly about the MD shutting down after being in pause too long. Walkman devices and the like have a 2 - 4 minuet time frame in which it will stay in pause- then shut down to save on battery power. As to downloading, Sony as led the way with NET Walkmans-, which enables you to make or download music (rip) it into the MD Walkman. This proves to save time rather than recording it in 'real-time'. 'Real-time' is done with a line input cable that plugs into the MD. The line in can be an optic (best quality) or analog stereo cable (good quality) . Downloading is the least quality as it tends to be compressed even more than normal. Sony created NET MD in 2000- and it makes for 2 to 4 times the music space on the same MD, and up to 32 X’s the speed in downloading compared to ‘real-time’. But the more you compress to accommodate more music- the worse the quality of sound reproduction. Standard Play (SP mode) is the best and least compression making it the highest quality of music. The best Mini Discs to get are ones that are being discontinued right now as last years models. The “10” series, the MZN- 510, 610, 710, 818, 910 and the 10. The MZN 920 is an awesome model as well as some of my favorites- the MZR 909, MZN 1. These models have the Optic/analog Line inputs for real time recordings. This has been a great option to leave yourself when you need it- and you will eventually. However- the newer models i.e. MZNH 520, 600D 420, (and any 400 series) – have had this input socket removed- making these devices more and more- just downloader’s. Unless you go up in price to the MZN(H) 800, 900 or even the nose bleed pricing of the MZNH1. These upper end products will have the input sockets. But they are not easy to find, and in some cases they have to be bought – on-line only. http://www.minidisct.com/md_products.html I think that Sony is morphing again- especially with the new HiMD’s coming out, but they may be improving its compression format- they will also remove the versatility of the input recording options in the future from now on. So now is he time to buy the ones wit the inputs before they vanish... Cheers, Kelly Duro

Thanks for that info Kelly.
If a minidisc/player recorder has line input jacks, can you fade in or fade out your recordings? I guess what I would like to know is...can you get one with a recording 'level' control? If so will it fade down to zero? Thanks. Regan

If you want reliable, you do not want a mini-disc. For years, MD swept the theatre sound design industry, being viewed as a panacea of sorts, the perfect blend of easy editing, track titling, rewriteability, and digital. Now, the same designers and engineers who specified MDs all the time just a few years ago refuse to use them.
The players are generally unreliable (although, oddly, portables have a better track record than decks in my experience); I and my colleagues/peers have seen decks of all major brands exhibit symptoms ranging from skipping at the minor end to causing discs to become completely unreadable. Trust me, if you want long term reliability, you want to go with a CD recorder, NOT an MD. My career as a sound designer/engineer depends on the equipment I specify working, and working well, and I won't risk my career by using MD. It's just not a reliable technology. I suggest you follow the lead of myself and most of the other sound professionals I know. Thanks Andy. I have been involved in sound for my entire life, but I know very little about MD.
My reason for wanting one is because of the Virtual Soundman. Isn't there some way to get a regular CD player to automatically pause after each track and then resume without hesitation when the play button is pushed again? Regan

I think that VSM works with several CD players.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Thanks. I did not know that. I need to check it out in more detail. I have really been wnting one, but I thought it worked only with Mini Disc players. That is the main reason why I have put off purchasing one.

Hi- Andy-
Looks like you and I are going to lock heads on this just a little… However I do agree with you about the unreliability of the Pro deck and home sized decks. I too have experienced this. And you do seem to agree that the Portable Walkman is more dependable than the decks. But what I think you don’t take into consideration- is that the vast majority of people are not doing 300 of more shows a year, and even the best equipment will fail under a show load like that. Most performers keep the disk inside there portable Walkman- where if not, they might begin to see some problems you mentioned. I have heard of problems of music loss with Memorex and Maxell brand disks, or with Sharp brand machines, but not with Sony. I personally have depended on the Mini Disc- for the same reasons you mentioned at the top of your post. But I can count on one hand the number of times in 10 years that I have had problems with the MD. I have done whirlwind schedules, and used the MD with confidence. I tend to buy the higher priced models-, which is where you may have overlooked. The higher end recorders do perform better - you get what you pay for. I always carry a back up just in case. But I don’t want you to throw out the baby with the bath water and scare folks in thinking that the (portable) MD is dead. It is not, far from it. Now- I respect your background Andy, but I think your opinion is overstated just a little. And if you disagree with me- then we’ll just have to go outside and bump chests and exchange bad breath for a while! (sorry-- just kidding of course-- Andy and I well acquainted with each other- In fact I know of several hundred performers around the world who have been using MD with my system and the show tech- and have a busier schedules than mine. And I hear from them frequently about their satisfaction of the format. Sure some find a lemon, but that is rare, other than that- many folks have been loyal to one machine for 5 or more years running. So from a practical standpoint- folks who are interested in show control for those reading here- can still have confidence in the format- if not- the Sony CD Walkman is cross compatible with its commands of the MD anyway. (BTW, Andy- I thought you were busy—still waiting to hear back from you) Cheers, Kelly Duro

Do you need to have a sound cue recorded between each track? (CD or MD)
If so, what source will work? Regan

The Virtual Soundman 7.5 allows you to record an inaudible cue on an MD or a CD to automatically stop the MD between tracks and have it go to the next one, while in the pause mode.
The sound is recorded directly from the VSM 7.5 to the MD or CD recorder. To use a CD player, it has to be one of the Sony Walkmans with a wired remote control. Michael |

Great News for Live Recording & MiniDisc!
It's official! You can now do high-speed digital uploads of your microphone and line input recordings on Hi-MD and convert them to WAV format. If you own a Hi-MD unit and have been waiting for the ability to export files from Sonic Stage to WAV format, the wait is over! Go here to download Sony's WAV Conversion Tool for FREE: http://sonyelectronics.sonystyle.com/walkmanmc/wav.html If you still don't have a Hi-MD unit, well there's no better time too get one. Here are some of the amazing things you can do with Hi-MD and why it is now the ultimate tool for live recording. With a Hi-MD recorder, you can... 1. Make your own high quality recordings with a microphone or via the analog line input. 2. Upload these recordings digitally and at high-speed into Sony's Sonic Stage software (included with every Hi-MD unit). 3. Use Sony's WAV Conversion Tool to digitally convert the files at high-speed to WAV format. 4. Now that your your recordings are in WAV format, you can edit your recordings, burn an audio CD, make MP3s or do anything else you want. You're limited only by your imagination! * * * There are no restrictions on your uploaded recordings! We've tested this in our office and it works like a charm. * * * Some folks are still happier using the open source Hi-MD Renderer software developed by a MiniDisc enthusiast. Its advantage over Sony's WAV Conversion Tool is that it also allows the upload of digital recordings made via an optical digital input. Read more about Hi-MD Renderer here: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=6087 Hope that helps, Cheers, Kelly Duro
