Most mentalism shows tend to fall into two camps, 1/loook at me I have powers etc I am psychic or 2/I am a magician performing puzzles for the mind. Does anybody use comedy in their mentalism routine?. by comedy I don't mean joke telling but asides to the audience, witty quips and ad libs etc///. graham jolley is a MASTER of this does anybody else do it? and how do you find it goes down with the audience ??

One of my shows is a comedy presentation, I have silly props and things, like the typical "mind to mind communication device" and le likes, to make it more up-beat and visual.
This show was born out of a request from one of my costomers who had seen mentalists before and said, "they are very clever and truly puzzling, however there's never much to see, can you do something about that in your show?" of course I agreed and went totally OTT and it went down very well. Kind thoughts, Kennedy

I use lines and bits of business that are funny all the time. I don't feel you have to play mentalism seriously just to get your point across.
As a matter of fact, I feel that for me it works as a bit of reverse psychology... I come across as an amusing and funny guy then I suddenly do something they can't explain and it throws them. Greg

Greg, people laugh at your shows because you're one of the funniest people alive.
(Everyone can learn a lot from watching Greg...) Another one of the best shows I've ever seen is Marc Salem's. Funny as hell. Not comedy per se, but witty and very engaging. |

See Jon Stetson. He is funny and very good at what he does. Max Maven has also been known to put a few good laughs in his shows.

Derren's stage show had me laughing all the way through - well not ALL the way through obviously if you have seen it - but he has bad jokes, witty lines and an all round entertaining style.
I would love to see Greg in action. |

Anyone who doesn't think mentalism can be funny has never seen Patrik Kuffs. The guy is hilarious.

Whenever I perform there is no way I can take the serious side of mentalism (the whole 'look at me I'm psychic' thing). It just seems uncomfortable (And that's what everybody wants - an uncomfortable performer). With things like the stupid sarcastic comedy in performing, its more natural and I'm more relaxed and easy going. Therefor making a better performance. But I don't have a set of lines to use, just go with the flow and do it a the spur of the moment.
Thanks! Scott B.

Yes Ian, I've been doing stand-up for some time now and comedy mentalism plays very well.

I am truly amazed at everyone's distinct lack of respect on this thread for the serious art of mentalism.
True mentalism must be presented in a sombre mode. Said performer must be attired in a dark three piece suit with shiny bow-tie and raised left eyebrow, with all props being procured from a small black leather attache case positioned slightly behind the performer. The performing Mentalist must speak slowly and concisely (Queens English obviously) revealing the innermost thoughts of the audience using only five cards with unusual shapes on them. Only then, will he be taken seriously and considered to be truly psychic. The Mentalist will be considered successful and perfectly charming if the there are loud gasps and cries of hip-hooray from the audience during the performance. (if I knew how to insert a smiley, winking face here I would by the way! - lol!) Cheers, Stephen. |

We are there to entertain, amuse and create astonishment, so I can only see that to involve great laughs and humor is an add-on to the show and a weapon for misdirection. Moreover as Greg mentions the contrast between creating fun and then suddenly real miracles is very strong.
I'm still just working on getting the astonishment trough, and I hope with more real life performing experience that I will acomplish spectator management that involves great fun as well. It's a constant journey and development process to get there - and actually that's the interesting part of the whole project. Enjoy the process along the way - don't just long for the end goal to arrive, cause it never will. |

I'd like to second Greg's post about making it funny and using this as a great contrast to soemthign utterly "impossible". It also works as a great cotrast to a more serious or risk routine, say Roulette of some description, whether it be with a gun, knives or acid.

One of my main routines gets huge laughs from the audience. However its from the situation and reaction from the participant to what I am doing rather than what I say. I think this is the most powerful humour you canuse in any audience participation form of entertainment. Mentalismis no different.
I think a good programme should be similar to a good movie it should take the audience through a roler coaster of divers emotions and internal experiences. This is why Derren's live show is so good.. Shrink again the key to creating a good programme isn't to focus on your character but what you want to give your audience.. |

I pretend he is making a joke and I scream out, "funny... now put on the real music." It's a light moment and gets them laugh a bit then the horror starts. Greg
