I know a small number of tricks with cards involving easy sleights like the "in-jog" control, glide, double lift, etc. Recently I decided I would learn card magic more systematically from "Royal Road to Card Magic". But the way "Royal Road" says the cards should be held for the overhand shuffle is significantly different from how I usually hold the cards, and I find it quite uncomfortable. When overhand shuffling I hold the pack sitting flat in the left hand.
My question is: How important is it to hold the cards in the overhand shuffle position described in "Royal Road to Card Magic"? Thanks for any advice you can give. |

At first the grip recommended in "The Royal Road" may seem awkward, especially your left hand pinkie position, but ultimately it really is best. This position provides more control over the cards. It helps keep the cards aligned when doing straight shuffling and makes it easier to locate the break when injogging. It's like wearing a seatbelt: not comfortable at first, but it is a really good idea, and after you've used it for a while, it will become quite natural.
