I am looking for a specific piece of music from cirque du soleil that I want to use for an illusion.
Does anyone know what the piece of music is called that the four chinese Girls use to perform the diabalo to in Quidam. It's not on the quidam CD but is on the DVD I have a feeling they may have appeared in other cirque du soleil shows. Please help this is driving me nuts Many Thanks Paul Dabek |

I asked my Fianee who just so happens to be a flyer (Trapeze) and loves Cirque.
She's pretty certain that it's "Carrousel" that you need. Hope this helps, -Chris.

I tried carrousel and that's not it, it seems to be one of the clowns waltzes.

How are you going to use the music. Please remember that music from a CD is copywritten and you must buy the rights to use it in your show. If you are performing in public you must have the performance rights.
In magic right now everyone complains about theft of material, using music without the rights is the same thing. If you are using music buy the rights, from ASCAP or BMI. You never know when you will run into problems if you don't. Believe me it is cheaper to buy the rights then to get caught using it without the rights. It happened to me many years ago and I learned my lesson. Never mess with Cirque or Disney, they are everywhere! |

Issac,
What happened when you were caught using the music without the rights? Surely just a letter asking you to stop? |

Unfortunatly no,not just a letter. I must admit it was not me personally but the resturant that I worked for.The GM never bothered to pay the fee and as the Promotional director for the resturant I was the one that caught the heat. The company paid a fine of $25,000 and the GM and I got canned. It was not a pretty picture. But It taught me some good lessons. It's easier to use custom music or just pay the fee. Remember, the mouse has ears everywhere.

I too have encountered something similar. I was asked to show the rights that I purchased for a particular show- but I did buy the rights to the music, and therefor was relieved. However- if it's a public/non fee show- meaning your not collecting any economic value or profit from the show- should you still pay the rights? Keep in touch...

The way copyright law works is: If you are being paid for a performance, and you use music which enhances your act, you have to license the rights from the copyright owner(s).
Some of the establishments you will perform in may purchase an annual "blanket" music license from ASCAP or BMI, which could cover many of the songs you use. But not always! Sometimes obtaining a music license will be entirely your own responsibility. Now if you use copyrighted music for birthday party shows in someone's private home, no one is going to come after you. I don't think the "music police" could be bothered. Same thing if you perform educational shows for schools, or church programs. They are considered exempt. Especially if you are not benefiting financially. (For example, if your profits are given to charity). But be very careful .... If money is being made at this type of event, there will be copyright issues. It might be a public, non-fee event from YOUR perspective, but if someone is benefiting financially (even if they are donating the money) you may owe compensation to the copyright owners of the music you use. I URGE you guys to look at my website (www.arthurstead.com) and check out my Make it Magic series of royalty-free music CD's. I can't tell you how many compliments I've received from performers all over the world, whose acts have benefited from adding music which was designed specifically for the magic community. And the best part is: it's all license-free, for you to use as you please! You never have to worry about breaking the law, or moral issues, or ethics. Using copyrighted music without a license is just asking for trouble. And I know for a fact that the music rights organizations like ASCAP and BMI are clamping down. Big fish and little fish are getting caught. Do yourself a big favor, and use royalty-free music. The cost is really minimal, considering how much your shows will benefit. Check out my website! Or, if you have bigger bucks to spend, go all the way and contact me about providing custom music services. - Arthur Stead |
