What magic magazines are out there and which do you recommend? Are there any to stay away from?
Thank you <>< |

Genii and Magic Magazine are excellent.
If you join the IBm you automatically get the Linking Ring and the SAM has M.U.M. There is also a magazine called Channel One put out by RFA Productions (Tony Miller although his wife probably does most of the work LOL).

Magic Magizine is my favorite. I like The Linking Ring and M.U.M. also. I prefer Magic Mag over Genii. Some may disagree. Both are excellent.

As well as those mentioned above there are a number of older magazines which have been reprinted into single volumes. Magic Menu by Jim Sisti, Epilogue, Chronicles and Pallbearers Review by Karl Fulves. The Collected Almanac by Richard Kaufman and Apocalypse by Harry Lorrayne. There is also a new mag coming out in the new year called antinonomy (?) which has Jamy Ian Swiss and Jon Racherbaumer as contributors.

I have heard Genii and Magic magazine mentioned in the forums.
Any one have preference of the two? As a general rule what is the main content of these magazines. Are there reviews of magic products and interviews with magicians? Or what is you look forward to when your issue arrives. Thanks again <>< |

I'm just a beginner trying to appreciate the differences myself. Learning about magicians interests me, but reviews and learning methods are a bit higher priority. I find trick descriptions in SAM’s MUM too terse and cryptic for my level. Methods are described as a series of moves by name only (e.g., Peek the third card. Control the selected card to second-from-the-top, expose with double lift, perform a pocket pass, put half the deck in your topit!). Explanations lack illustrations. The tricks that are reviewed seem to be ones contributed for that purpose.
My first copy of IBM’s Linking Ring may arrive today. Harrry Lorayne’s Apocalype concentrates on new card tricks, but includes other types of magic, and Harry’s comments on the magic scene. No ads. Its descriptions are even more advanced (i.e., harder for me to follow) than MUM’s. Both Genii and Magic include a good number of fine tricks much more clearly explained and very well illustrated. Kaufman's wonderful drawings illustrate the tricks explained in Genii. You may be familiar with his drawings from his books. Genni's illustrations are just as good. He is the editor. A highlight of each issue is a tribute to a famous magician. The tricks that are reviewed in later sections are from that famous magician's repertoire. Nice organization for your reference library. You get about 100 pages/month. Joshua Jay has (edits?) a section explaining tricks in each issue which I have of Magic. Tricks are credited to a different professionals, well explained, and illustrated with large, close-up photographs. Trick selections are outstanding! Jay’s choices make if cost ineffective for a beginner to not have a subscription. You get about 120 pp/month. So, both Genii and Magic are great bargains if you haven’t already spent a small fortune on tricks. Two pluses for Magic are: its regular, but extremely brief contributions by Martin Gardner and an extensive list of who is performing where each month. My comments are based on reading a few issues of these four periodicals. Please correct possible errors. I hope these impressions help someone and that seasoned readers will contrast differences I have yet to discern.

All the above proposals are really excellent. You just choose one and you can't go wrong, that's for sure. But, you have one more alternative, if you like to avoid waiting. Subscribe to the new online magazine "Cogitations" which its first issue is expected from day to day. Mr. Steven Youell, the prompter of that, is a well known magician, a very talented man and an excellent teacher. You can find out more informations, here: www.cardguy.net/Cogitations.html or contact Mr.Youell by sending a pm to him. He's a member here.
Hope it helps Vasilis |

Magic Magazine is more visual and Genii is more descriptive with words. Depends what your taste is. I like to see more pictures so Magic Magazine gets my vote.
