I'm looking for variations for ways to perform a blendo using ungimmicked silks. I do not want to use a change bag, and would like to avoid a hankball if possible. Will a crystal cylinder work? How about crystal tube? I'm not sure how the gimmicks for those two work, but I don't want to buy and get burned.
Any other ideas would be welcomed and greatly appreciated.
I need a stage name.

Hi BerkleyJL:
The Crystal Silk Cylinder is an excellent way to do a blendo effect, if you don't mind using a prop. The nice thing about the Crystal Cylinder is there are no real angle problems and it can be done relatively close up. It is a fine piece of apparatus that has stood the test of time. Another option is to use a paper bag. I remember seeing this in one of the Rice's Silk books - you basically show a paper lunch sack empty, put in the silks, twist-close the top and blow into the bag like you would a balloon. You then pop the bag with your hands and out comes the big silk. All the silks are ungimmicked, but you do have to make a new bag each time you do it (it probably will take you 3 minutes - very easy). I can give you more details if this interests you. I mentioned "Splendo" on another thread here. Check out http://www.laflinmagic.com to see if this suits you - the silks are all ungimmicked. While at that site, you might want to check out "Four Square Blendo" because it uses ungimmicked silks. There is a little something you must dispose of, but the silks are not gimmicked in any way. I hope this helps you. Ron |

Thanks for your comments Ron. I already have the silks I want to use, so Splendo isn't going to help me. I'm using 4 18" silks and producing a 36" silk with a picture made from the four colors. I heard 4-square blendo doesn't allow you to show the four silks separately, which is why I purchased the silks I have now.
I like the crystal cylinder a lot better than the paper bag. We'll have to see which one my wallet prefers. Any other props I might not even know about that can make the switch? I did consider a mirror box, but it's a little bulky for what I intend.

Popcorn dye box (this could be made with any box (soap powder etc.), Casket of Pandora by Abbott's (also other switch tubes will work), Temple screen.
You are correct. The Four square blendo does not allow you to show the silks separate.

Depends on the thickness of the silks, I am using a large dye tube which hold 2 – 18” silks or 1- 24” silk. You may prepare a larger dye tube from carton and use it a long.
Good luck Eran

How about using a small box frame and balloons? Pavel has a great routine IMO called "Balloon Box Blendo" that makes this effect look larger than it is and everything packs flat! By using balloons you add sound and theater to this otherwise bland routine. I always had a hard time with the blendo until I saw this routine, and now it’s in my act as a great routine. You can custom make your own quality box pretty cheap yourself too!
Pavel also has an effect called "Quad Silks" that is the world’s easiest blendo effect on the tape. It’s not as good IMO to the Balloon Box Blendo, but still a good effect if you used it along with something else. Look up the tape "Pavel's Cabaret Silks" video at http://www.llpub.com/zenshop/index.php?main_page=specials it’s on sale for only $10 and it’s more than worth that price. If you have not looked into it, I would highly suggest it. MM

The Blendo is Phase 2 of a 3-phase routine where each phase builds on the last. I'm hoping a Lewis Cone will effect the switch for me, because the prop will mesh nicely with the rest of my stage presence.
As soon as I gather all the props, I can start rehearsal and get this thing ready for performance. I better hurry, because I only have until October to be ready.

Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic Volume 3 has a whole chapter on Blendos. One involves using a small sock or stocking --- cheap alternative and does not require a change bag or Lewis Cone. Duane Laflin also demonstrates this on his "Secrets of Silk MAgic Volume 2" DVD. I would check out either of the two sources. Abbott's and Rice Silk King Studios both have ungimmicked Blendos.
