"you really like "to kill a mockingbird" ?"
Great, that makes 3 of us!!! I am sure of the main reason why many people do not like this book is simply because they HAD (read oblige) to read it in school at one point or another... I, for one, read it on my own, and enjoyed it a lot, so much in fact that I read it 3 times over the years (it's a thin book!!!) The movie is actually one of the few movies based on a book that does not totally stink!!! (great actors too). Paul Harris is also one of my favorite magician-author, the magic is great and his writing is refreshing and pretty funny, as opposed to the dry, almost boring description style of many others! I never heard of "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole, but I sure will look it up. As you probably guessed, I am an avid reader, and I think you can know a lot about people if you look at their bookshelves... Two of my favorite books are "The Power of One" and "Tommo & Hawk" by Bryce Courtenay. Thank you Mr Williamson for sharing these titles with us, I appreciate it. Ronnie Lemieux Montreal Canada

Man, I think we are kindred spirits - at least in books - and I'm not just brown nosing here! The Amateur Magician's Handbook is my all-time favorite magic book, and I've become almost obsessed with learning about the life of its author, J. Barrows Mussey. (Very little info seems to be out there, but I have found a few people who knew him.) Sadly, I've never read Greater Magic, but I think it was a sequel to The Art of Magic by Nelson Downs, which I have read. Downs is one of my favorite dead magicians as well. And Paul Harris . . . one of those people I would just about give everything I own to meet in person some day . . . if I had to list my favorite magic books, they would be the "handbook", The Art of Magic, and the Art of Astonishment.
Confederacy of Dunces is one of the few books that have had me in stitches of laughter the whole time I was reading it (Forrest Gump and Breakfast of Champions are in the same ballpark . . ), and To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the few books that have had me in bitter tears for most of its course. I had to read it for school, but I loved it. I still think it's one of the best books ever written. I saw the movie, which was good but not as good as the book. And I saw a play on it one time, which was also good, but still not as good as the book. That woman only wrote one book, but she made it count. Geek Love was pretty interesting but sort of freaked me out too much by the end. Adn I hated Arturo the Aqua Boy. I loved the first half of the book, hated the second half, if I remember right -- read it about 3 years ago . . . Ah, but good choices in books! As a certifiable bookworm, I'm very impressed. |

I also love "To Kill a Mockingbird." I didn't have to read it in school, read it much later as an adult.
By the way, there's a store in Spokane, Washington, called "Boo Radley's." I've never been there, but always thought it was a great name for a store. And yeah, Gregory Peck was a great Atticus Finch. Geoff

I read "To Kill a Mockingbird" simply because I had to read it in 8th grade. It's a pretty good book and the movie was even better imo.

My 6th grade English teacher had me read "To Kill A Mockingbird" after I had burned through everything else on her required reading list. Hardly age appropriate at the time. Now that I have a 5th grader of my own I can't imagine what she was thinking. At least she didn't give me any Paul Harris stuff - that was the really racy literature.

Actually, I'm just shocked when anyone else actually likes the same thing I do, because I'm a weirdo. But perhaps I should consider who I'm talking to here. Confederacy of Dunces was the bomb . . . one of those books I re-read scenes from a lot. I loved it when he would start screaming, "MY VALVE! MY VALVE IS CLOSING!" Sometimes I contemplate doing that at my job. |

Hey Dave,
Does "Confederacy" get funny after about page 120? Because that's where I've got the two times I've tried to read it and each time I'm waiting for it to make me laugh... Everyone talks it up but maybe I'm missing something (like a chromosome or something). Yours, Confused in the middle east.
