I am looking for the best naturl-looking technique for Add a Number routine.
When I used a pad, people thoght that some how I changed the page. When I used a calculator, people thoght that It was specially made. Do you have a good solution? |

Banachek's Add-a-number has a great solution to this, it can be found on his DVDs. The solution offered by his is that the spectators can all see each of their own written down numbers AND the total at the same time.
Another suggestion if you are gettign this a lot is to use one of the mathematical force number things. Hope this helps a little? K

Have someone sign the page when using a pad and then verify their signature again when the total is tallied. This can help with the change of page accusation.

Karl Fulves Self Working Number Magic has a nice reverse Add a Number effect. In effect the audience calls out a 6 digit number and the mentalist mmediately hands out a card with 4 5 digit numbers that adds up to the called out total.
I don't like the books method. However, using a s***i turns it into a superb effect. |

Max Maven has a nice one which he uses in his book test Autome (sp?)
Check out his VideoMind video/DVD series for it. Its ungimmicked and just uses business cards. Hope this helps. I also like Banacheks. Cheers, TM |

Carlyle's has the people who wrote the numbers verify their numbers in their own writing after the addtion has been done.

Max Maven's is just great. What could be more innocent than a small stack of business cards.
I've made up Banachek's from the Psi Series and have used it on a couple of occations. It is brilliant, and the spectactors can verify what they wrote. The best among the pads/wallets, is The Bogie. Very, very good, but not exactly inexpensive. The spectactors can handle this. Sven

Could you give me more info on "The Bogie?" Who makes it? Is there a website? Etc. Thanks! Bennett |

I bought it some years ago, and regardless of the indisputeable quality,I would think twice before I ordered it, if I were you. If you are dead certain about that this is the kind of device you need, and know exactly what you will use it for, - then buy it. If you are not, you'll find pretty many alternatives to it. Banachek's will cost you less than a buck to make, so will Lesley's. Max Maven's costs you next to nothing -that is if you have, or can get hold of the documentation how to make them. If you have to buy the Cds for Maven's and Banachek's, they still are 25% of what you would give for The Bogey. I think Lesley's book is around 45$ these days, - about 1/3 of the Bogey. ...and in addition to how to make a clever pad, you will get tons of great routines. Good luck Sven PS, when you read the adds, you will see that The Bogey comes with a special marking pen. Actually you don't need that. The writing surface is actually a mini whiteboard slate, and the special with the marker is that it is a non permanent one. Becker suggests to just put some PostIt sheets on top of the writing surface, and I have done just that. That looks more innocent.

I use the Kozar Prediction Pad, but I use time misdirection to take the heat off the pad and before any serious mentalism takes place. I will do a magic square first, selecting a two digit number from the audience. After that demonstation I do another "exercise" with 3 different members from the audience and have the fourth calculate the sum total, write it on 3x5 card and place it an envelope which he keeps to himself throughout the program. I say we will work with that number later in the program. I close with three predictions, using three different methodologies, one of which is the spectator's sum total. Inspired by Chuck Hickok. Obvioulsy there is a trade-off in this routine but it works well for me and fits with my patter and style. - just a thought

OTL is very good, but there are limits for using it for an add a no.
Among others, you can't use the entire writing surface. I'd go for Max Maven's half pass, rather than this, for this use. Sven

Hi ya, Roei ! The best and most natural method for that effect (to me) is to get a small pad, take the card backing off, have your numbers on one side and the other is for the audience. Have the cardboard back lose and covering your numbers, once the audience has filled out their numbers, as you are on your way back to the stage turn your side over and cover the audience side with the card backing.
It takes a bit of nerve, but with the proper handling, you can even go back into the audience to double check the numbers with the audience. Make up your own routine, put your personality into it and forget about what the rest are doing, be inventive. ~Rick~ |

David Berglas has a great add-a-number routine.
If you can read his book(only 1000 copies!!) seek for this routine. the great thing is that he almost always combined the number prediction with something else-like a word from a newspaper. have fun Roi |
