Anyone have a review on matchbox mambo. Is this trick worth investing. It's just 2 matchboxes.

Cute. Can be examined afterwards. Good for walkaround closeup. You could not make the gimmiac very easily. If you enjoying playing with this type of effect it is worth the money.

Have to disagree with MerlH here. I could make this gimmick in 15 minutes for pennies on the dollar (if not for free). I have also found it does not work well with all matchboxes.
When I purchased MM it did not come with the matchboxes as promised (dealer error?) which may help the presentation and more important the handling, when I saw what the gimmick was for MM and how much I paid for it I was less than thrilled to say the least.

I think kithei kid got a defective package if he didn't get the matchboxes with his purchase. I think the effect is very clever and easy to do. With the right presentation, it's a very nice effect.

This is a really nice effect, actually it is a really nice routine. Depending on your patter it could take 30sec to 2 minutes to do. The gimmick is not very awe inspiring to look at but it works perfectly for what it needs to do and I would think it would last for hundreds of years or until you lost it.
I use the following patter which I came up with: "When I was a kid my father told me that in life when one door closes another door opens. I did not really understand what he was saying but I was fascinated by the idea. So I grab a couple matchboxes, empty of course since he also told me to never play with matches, and decided to see if it also followed that when one DRAWER closes another DRAWER opens. I quickly discovered that if you had the right attitude then when one drawer closed the other one will in fact open (do first phase). This was of course amazing to me. So I started to try other arrangements, like one drawer on top of the other (do phase 2), or one drawer upside down (phase 3), or not lined up (phase 4) or even perpendicular to each other (phase 5). So I guess my dad was right after all. But I must warn you, just in case you try this at home, make sure that your matchboxes are completely empty (open up and hand out boxes) first. Seen o matches, I never ever play with matches!"

Thales, nice patter/ presentation idea. Thank you.
Tenyo (2009 range of products) has come out with a similar version known as Synchro Boxes. The method/ working are almost similar to Matchbox Mambo. The ‘Synchro Boxes’ is self contained i.e. the Gimmick is built in and is very well concealed. Thus in Synchro Boxes nothing needs to be added or taken away where as in Matchbox Mambo the tiny gimmick needs to be palmed and ditched (though very easy to do). The only concern one might have is, Matchbox Mambo uses ordinary matchboxes where as Synchro Boxes are plastic matchboxes. However both effects (i.e. props) can be examined at the end of the trick. P.S. I do NOT have either of the tricks. I have seen & know the working (of the gimmick) of Synchro Boxes. As for the Matchbox Mambo the gimmick was explained to me by a friend. Both gimmicks are similar in working.

A little practice and you have a very effective effect. Definitely worth the money. It's a little angley but has the large advantage that you can hand out the matchboxes at the end. And the audience will want to see them.

Tenyo Synchro Box gimmick is wonderful. Not easily detectable but would still be found if a spec really scrutinize it, the only thing suspicious about Tenyo box is the way it looks as it's not any normal matchbox laying around in the house.
So regarding Matchbox Mumbo gimmick, how easily can it be palm/ditched in walkaround situation, especially if you have big hands? Cheers. |

Relatively easy because it fits along your middle finger perfectly. Your hand looks natural as you hand the match boxes out. Hand size won't be an issue.
Combine this with a card-to-matchbox using a third similar matchbox, that has some matches in it, and you have a potent one-two punch. Ditch the gimmick while fetching the third matchbox (or the deck) from your pocket--or if you are seated you can easily drop the gimmick in your lap. I was going to try the Tenyo version but the plastic dissuaded me.

The tenyo version also called Sun and Moon box because one box has a cartoon sun on it's face and the other one a moon. Really look like a kids toy.

Thanks Ustaad for that link to the Synchro Boxes. I do not really like the look of the boxes but I liked some of the moves in the routine which can easily be added to my Matchbox Mambo routine. Matchbox Mambo does have angle issues which is why I have so far stuck to doing it for only one or two people at a time. I am not as smooth at ditching the gimmick as I would like to be but with a bit more practice I think I will have it worked out.

I would personally prefer the innocent looking Matchbox Mambo. You may like to checkout a nice presentation of Matchbox Mambo. Enjoy!

Here's one explanation. I would use a tiny bit of repositioning glue on the head of one of the matches.

Thanks Afuoco,
I thought that is what Shaun Yee was doing but he has his angles and timing down so well it looks perfect, like the matches are really passing through each other. I love seeing magicians do an effect perfectly. It let me know that it can be done and pushes me to practice until I am able to do it that well or at least almost that well.

I just picked up Matchbox Mambo. The only disappointing aspect was that Bob Ostin was not cited for his work on the plot (there was a section on credits at the end of the instructions that did not include any reference to Ostin). Moreover, the structure and working of the gaff is nearly identical to that put out by Bob Ostin in his improved matchbox effect (in the "Magic of Bob Ostin" book).
It could be a function of independent invention, but it would not have hurt to at least acknowledge Ostin's work, given his close association with the effect (as noted by Tenyo in their release of the Synchro Boxes). MR |
