David,
Throughout your tapes you have the on going "who's the man?" gag. (To which the audience inevitably replys, "you da man!") My question is this: Is this something you say to all audiences? (It certainly fits your persona but lord knows I wouldn't be able to get away with it, especially in England.) Is it only something you say when you feel you have struck up a good enough rapport with an audience? Have you ever had "one of those audiences" and to what extent (if at all) do you adapt your performing persona to make yourself more compatable with any given audience? Appreciate your thoughts, Stephen :coolspot:

Actually, I don't do it much anymore. It was in my act for awhile (and is intended to be inappropriate - I'm a short white guy) so I felt I'd leave it in when I committed the act to tape. What it did for me was communicate to the audience that this wasn't the type of theatrical event where one sits, watches in a detatched manner, then applauds when it's over - I was teaching the audience to be vocal. I still try to do that, but in other ways. One wants to eliminate barriers, not appear to be begging, so it's a judgement call. Of course one also has to judge the audience and the venue, always. If I perform at a celebration for one person in particular, I make a point of first doing something that makes the person of honor the star, then do something that involves a number of guests, to give them a showcase. After that, I've usually won some good will, and can "play" with the audience more, as they hopefully have welcomed me into their fold. |

On this topic of spectators I would just like put out a shout to JON COOKE (possibly the best spectator that a performer could wish for).
Dave, is he as good as he seems to perfom to on your (and everyone else's!) tapes? Big up yourself Jon! PT
Good judgement comes from bad experience, and a lot of that comes from
bad judgement. |

Jon strikes me as a nice guy. And he genuinely likes magic.
