I'm in an animation class, and I'm working on a project where I'll animate the cards. Hoping to have the court cards talk, and perhaps the joker ride his bike off the card. I'd like to scan some card images and manipulate the mouths, etc, and then print back out to blank card stock. I'm wondering if anyone has particular experience with this, or if I should look to other methods. I know acetone will take the ink off cards. I need so few of these that I'd definitely like to do it myself, rather than hire a printer. Thanks.

I used this method with limited success. Up close, it was obvious the cards were "home made". (I made a set of jumbo "Stan, Kate, and Edith" cards.) Eventually, I bought a "real" set.
Unfortunately, I can't offer any better method for custom cards. |

Mark Allen's 'Versatile Monte' tells you how to print custom playing cards on your computer. It gives you all the info you will need to get started, and you can produce good quality cards on card stock, depending on the quality of your printer. It is much easier to start with blank face or all blank cards, rather than trying to first remove the ink off of the cards. You can get these cards inexpensively through most magic dealers, either online or regular retail shops. I have produced a variety of cards, and while not the same quality as cards from a printer, they can be indistinguishable to all but the most astute observer. Good luck -

Hi Bill,
I purchased the same dvd as you , and I have produced some wonderful gaff cards with really decent quality. There is one issue though. I do great with black cards, but I can't seem to match the red cards to the quite right consistancy or color. Have you done better? Can you share how?

Cliffg37 - I have not been able to reproduce the red that is standard for Bicycle cards. I have tried playing with the color values, and can't get it to match. Mark Allen shows a sample on the dvd that looks like a near perfect match, but I can't seem to get it. If anyone here has suggestions, I also would love to hear them. Thanks -

Have you tried silk screening the cards?

Not sure if these folks can help, but the stock already has the backs on them
http://www.plaincards.com/ and they have a download for setting things up. At least you do not have to worry about matching a deck, you can do the entire deck to match!

I played with this with a laser printer. Prepare card with acetone. Scan card into computer, so you have pips, ect of the right size. Put image in power point, test print to get exactly right size. Now print to a sheet of paper. Put double sided tape on paper right over the printed image of the card. Now put blank, prepared card in this area and send thru printer again. The result was pretty good, with black. An injet printer which allowed the paper to move through printer without passing around a roller would work better.

True Garcia,
You have the process down just fine. But how are the quality of the colors of the face cards?

After much trial and error, I've had trememdous success making my own jumbo cards...
I print out the color verion on some quality stock and take it to the local kinko's type place. I then run a color copy on glossy card stock, as ink jet ink will run, and messing with spray fixatives etc is more trouble than it's worth. Plus, the finish on the glossy card stock is nice and fairly durable. The only downside I've found is that the colors from a color copier aren't nearly as vivid as what you'll get from your inkjet, but I'm extremely happy with what I've made despite that. per sheet it will generally run you less than a dollar, so for a nice custom jumbo card (8" 6.5" approximately) you're looking at under $3. take your color copies home, and with some spray adhesive, fix two sheets of plain card stock together, and mount the color copies to either side. If you want the cards to be blank on one or both sides, make sure to pick up a couple extra sheets of glossy stock while at the print shop. after that, head on down to office depot/max/whatever and get yourself a corner rounding punch for $6-$10 to cut the corners. You should be able to find it in the scrapbooking section. Make sure to test it out on some blank sheets to get a feel for how it works..I makde this mistake on my nice custom set and spent a bit of time fixing my errors. The kodak brand cuts a 1/8" diameter, no good for regular size cards, but for jumbos it is like it was made for them. Hope this helps! |

If you are using traditional printing methods, use a rubberized ink.
I think I would use an injet transfer and then spray it with a clear coat.
