Topic: Paul Harris on DVD?
Message: Posted by: Charles Adams (Jan 24, 2005 09:44AM)
Does anyone know if there are plans in the works for some/all of Paul Harris' work to be released on DVD (i.e. Stars of Magic tapes and Art of Astonishment)?
Message: Posted by: S.Segal (Jan 24, 2005 11:28AM)
Paul is actually shooting DVD's now encompassing a lot of his work. I believe he is set to release a 10 DVD set later this year.

Is he doing this with L&L?
Message: Posted by: Charles Adams (Jan 24, 2005 11:52AM)
10 DVDs!! That is something to look forward to. Do you know who he is working with to publish this?
Message: Posted by: S.Segal (Jan 24, 2005 02:46PM)
I am not sure... I beleive this is something between Paul and possibly AOI Magic. I am sure you will hear more later on this year regarding these DVDs.

Paul at last conversation was hoping the news wouldn't get out for a while....

I met Rodney from AOI in Vegas and he said he was directing something with Paul that would come out in the not too distant future.
Message: Posted by: zur (Jan 25, 2005 12:31AM)
I can't wait. This man has so many good ideas you start to have self-doubt in your own creativity. Everytime I read the AoA books I feel that he has these really really good ideas, very artistic man.
Message: Posted by: Matt Bartz (Jan 25, 2005 12:22PM)
Syd and Adam are correct. I've also heard that AOI Magic is shooting a 10 dvd set with Paul Harris. Last I heard it was almost done and they were hoping to release in Spring or Summer of 2005. (I got the information from my local IBM Ring Monthly Newsletter--It was in a summary of an inteview conducted with Rodney from AOI Magic. But that was back in October or November, and I haven't heard any new rumors.)
I've just been sitting tight, hoping Paul or AOI make an official announcement sometime soon.

10 DVDs?!?! Hummphh, it will take a lifetime to learn all magic from these DVDs :)
Must be a nice experience to watch Paul do his weird magic.
Message: Posted by: paisa23 (Jan 26, 2005 03:10AM)
Nothing else to see but I'm sold. I love this man his effects are great. Andyou are right I will take short of a life time to learn everything he has to say.
Message: Posted by: montserat_13 (Jan 26, 2005 11:51AM)
I thought Paul is retired already, but I guess it's nice to have him back. Is he still doing shows or workshop maybe..?
Message: Posted by: Tom G (Jan 26, 2005 03:52PM)
For those interested... the dvd's will consist of about 50% new stuff that Paul
is excited about and 50% of older effects that have been overhauled, so basically, you might see familiar effects, but they will have improved handling or plot. There's no set list yet as to what will and won't be on them. As for the timeframe <hopefully> within a year, but nothing cast in stone.....

A few questions for anyone willing to help:

Is there anywhere on the net where I can find updates on this set of dvd's?

Will it contain old stuff that's not in art of astonishment?

Any estimations on the price? (I presume around $250)

Should I hold off my purchase for Art of Astonishment and wait for these?
Message: Posted by: niva (Jan 28, 2005 05:56AM)
No. Buy AOA as surely the DVDs won't contain all the goodies in the AOA books.
Message: Posted by: timofy (Jan 28, 2005 06:57AM)
I think I agree also the dvd's will probably compliment the books well. But could anyone please answer the other questions.

Thanks

I don't want to blow the news if Paul wasnt wanting this to get out but when I seen him around august. He told me that they were basicly almost done. They just needed to get all the bugs worked out. He wasnt sure if they were going to make 10 dvd's or not. I cant wait. Then finish all the little stuff, credits, artwork, intro's ect. This is going to be one set for the collection that's for sure. I wish paul would come on here and update us all but I'm sure in good time we shall find out the final work.

I've used Improv Nightshades, Fizz Master, Shape of Astonishment and Zen and the Art of Boomerang for years now and they're all incredible effects.

At one time I also performed Unshuffling Rebecca, and Backlash.

That's six effects out of nine that I use or have used. So if they're junk, then brother, call me Fred Sanford, because I think they're great.

I posted this elsewhere:

There has been some talk/rumors on new DVDs by Paul Harris and I wanted to give official word on this exciting project. The rumors ARE true. Paul is actively working on a new DVD project entitled "True Astonishments".

Paul and I discussed it last year at length and Paul decided to make a DVD series that would be the end for all, quite possibly his last "big" project. Paul hired a great producer to ensure these will be the absolute best they can be- very cutting edge. True Astonishments was originally going to contain all of the material in Art of Astonishment. Paul then decided to shift the project so that it is all A++ material with absolutely no filler. Thus he has reworked some of the better items in AOA, added new items that are really magnificent, and received some contributions that will blow your socks off. It has been narrowed down to about 70 or 80 items and all will be of the absolute highest caliber.

The DVD set will be out most likely around NEXT September. Paul is spending ALL of his time working on this huge and important project and you will not be disappointed. There are many amazing surprises that will be announced closer to that time. Start saving your money now. This could be one of the most important and exciting projects in a LONG time. As it gets closer we will release more details. We just felt it was important to give everyone a heads up on this.

BTW... I meant September/October of THIS year. Sorry for the miscommunication. I don't know what I was thinking. As of today it is still on schedule for that time frame and Paul is working very day on it.

Thank you so much for verifying, clarifying, and making us all the more excited about what's in the works... fying.

The AOA video was disappointing, but it had nothing to do with the effects themselves. It had more to do with the manic spectators who just seemed to be faking it. I think even the producer of the video was pretending to be a spectator (Murphy?). I see what Harris was trying to achieve. The spectators describing their experience was a great idea, in theory. Often what they recollect differs much from what they actually experienced.

Perhaps the filming is already done on these DVDs, but that would be my two cents: Don't use the same spectators you used in the AOA video! ;)

My other suggestion. PLEASE pass this along to Trono and Harris. How about "A day in the life of Paul Harris." Most of us only here stories about how he lives in a tent in someone's backyard. No kidding I heard this rumor many times. How about the real story.

The cheesey pretend excitement of the spectators looked like an experiment in audience reactioins. It was annoying but, didn't ruin the video. The terrible magic did. Dull, dull, dull!!!
Message: Posted by: Mereacle (Feb 11, 2005 10:26PM)
What sort of magic do you perform Magic Chris?

I have performed some of the items on AOA hundreds of times. And I assure you that to REAL people- people that don't call themselves "Magic ++++"- the effects are astonishing and memorable.

Instead of trying to diminish AOA, tell us (or Paul)- what you might be looking for.

Best wishes,
Josh

I peform Paul Harris effects ( he created so much, you can't help perform his stuff even if you don't know it's his;-) just not the junk on the art Of astonishment video.

It wasn't good and panned by critics. It was a poor video.
Message: Posted by: Joe Roberts (Feb 13, 2005 11:37AM)
Chris, if you can't support your opinion, I guess that's fine, but don't just keep repeating it and then try to convince others by saying it was "panned by critics." It wasn't.
Message: Posted by: Mereacle (Feb 13, 2005 07:41PM)
Again, I see why Paul Harris avoids this whole internet thing.

The Shape of Astonishment on the AoA video is a wonderful and creative magic trick.

It was panned by critics. The effets were poor. Even the greats slip once in awhile.

Okay MagicChris. What MagicCritics are you talking about? Was their opinion more detailed, and informed, than yours?
Message: Posted by: Review King (Feb 14, 2005 02:23AM)
Hey, Paul is a genius, we can all agree on that. His new DVD's will rock the boat in magic!!!

Now, I would give him a critique in person, if I ever meet him.

Let's say he was in the mall. I'd go up to him and say say "Paul, here's my version of Backlash from your art Of Astonishment Video" and I'd bounce the deck off his head.

OR, he'd be at the grocery store and I'd yell "Paul, here's my version of Flesh from your art Of Astonishment Video" and I'd crash my cart into his legs.

OK, I do stand up comedy, so I'm teasing. I'd shake and quiver and trip over my tounge saying hello if I ever met him. He's THE MAN!!!!

Here's something fromt he video that was so incredible and pure Paul Harris that I couldn't invent or do in 1000 years of practice: Zen and the Art of Boomerang. Pure Paul Harris and shows why he's the superman of magic.

I think you need to do a little work on your routines there, Big Guy. The comedy part is a tad weak.
Message: Posted by: Review King (Feb 14, 2005 08:15PM)
My comedy doesn't read well. It's more visiual. Ever read what Sam Kinison said? Looks bad. In person-you'd cry laughing.
Message: Posted by: Matt Graves (Nov 20, 2005 10:01AM)
If there was anything weak about the effects, I'd say it was the environment in which they were performed. They would have looked ten times better performed for an actual audience or even people off the street like David Blaine does. The tricks certainly do work for real people, though. I've performed all of them except Zen/Art of Boomerang and Angel Case. I just had no interest in performing those. (Plus I can't boomerang cards no matter how much I've tried over the years.) But I've tried out all the others on family and on total strangers, and they work bigtime. Hopefully on these DVD's we'll get to see Paul really performing for random people. I find it odd that he avoids the Internet. Someone who knows him on this board told me that he'd invited him to be a guest on the Café', but he wasn't interested because he doesn't like sitting in front of a computer screen. That's kind of odd that someone who has written all these books and produced all these high-tech sleights and tricks is not too keen on technology. Very unique guy, he seems to be. I'd love to meet him. He's got to be one of the coolest guys in magic today. I've met Michael Ammar and Joshua Jay, which was cool, but that would pale in comparison to meeting Paul Harris. Maybe when the DVD's come out he'll do a lecture tour or something to promote them. Hey, it could happen.
