Topic: misdirection during jo-dan link
Message: Posted by: ben creitz (Sep 25, 2002 04:37PM)
I'm sure somebody here does this trick from Elastrix #2. I have tried it out on some close friends and while they don't know how I do it, they all know that something is happening in the beginning. I figured out a natural motion to use, but it so happens that using this motion makes noise. What do you guys do??

hmmm....where is the problem noise exactly? In the actual setup before the link? or during the linking for the spectator?

If it's during the setup it should be simple to display the two bands not linked up and then make eye contact with the person for a moment and talk to them while you give the bands the quick setup. Should only take a moment, and should make no noise if your hands are close together.
If the problem is during the actual link then i suggest you put the focus on the middle two rungs of the "ladder" and tell the spectator to watch them as you twist both hands apart. The twisting motion will bring the bands in contact with one another, once, twice and then Bang! the bands are linked. I just did this one with some drinking buddies not 30 minutes ago to a nice reaction.

I personally like the jo-dan link, slightly improved handling can be found on the bandshark tape from Harlan.

Hi Ben
Nae Blis is spot on. This is one of the simplest elastic band effects which always gets a good reaction. Just keep talking during the set up and even if the specs are aware of you moving your hands or fingers they won't see anything 'fishy' happening. I always use different coloured bands which emphasises that these are two separate bands which link together by just touching them against each other.
I can't understand how you're getting a noise problem - are you using rubber or steel bands? :rotf:
Just keep practicing the set-up till it's quick and smooooth.

Here's a little finesse!!!!
when your putting both bands on your fingers do the "move" while the hands are still together (undercover of trying to get the bands into postition) to perform the effect.

Then when you stretch your hands apart your already into postions.

This finesse has never seen print so have fun with it. You'll see that there's alot of cover and very deceptive because there's no quick movement in the middle of the routine when your trying to setup for the link.

OH BTW: I have enough material for vol. 3

Joe - I will be first in line for #3!! #2 was such a fun book. I see the benefit of doing the setup with hands together. I was putting the bands on my fingers, stretching and twisting them repeatedly, throwing the move in while the bands were stretched. The noise came from the re-oriented bands slightly snapping against my fingers. I will try this according to your recommendations! Thanks
