Just came across this 3 DVD set 'Inside The Mind Of Garrett Thomas' from L&L.
Who is Garrett Thomas? Looks like he has some great ideas.

I attended his lecture/performance at the Deceptions Convention a couple years ago. He's a very talented and creative close-up magician, with some really startling presentations. He has some stuff that might be appealing to mentalists as well, such as a very effective "think of any card you see" handling. (I'll probably buy that volume, just to study his work on that subject alone.)

He's a very skilled guy. He's got some foolers, that's for sure. His tenkai jumbo coin work is nrilliant.

These 3 DVDs by Garrett Thomas will be coming out at the end of October with the new Richard Osterlind DVDs discussed elsewhere. I have been fortunate enough to see a prerelease copy and these are fabulous! They include some of Garrett's most talked about pieces previously released such as the Big Coin Little Purse but in AMAZINGLY detailed explanation with new updates. Also included is a LOT of brand new material never before revealed by Garrett. In my opinion one of the highlights is his Brass Block - a great card to matchbox routine with a great call back. This routine had people screaming. Garrett uses it all of the time in his professional work.

If you have not heard of Garrett you will be VERY happy with these DVDs, if you already know Garrett and have seen his work, you will undoubtedly already want these. Don't miss these or the new Osterlind DVDs- both really excellent releases!

Garret's other work is great. His Ring Thing (I believe that's the name of it) is just phenomenal. An anytime, anywhere miracle that requires only a ring. Good stuff.

Garret Thomas is a sensational performer. His material is very commercial and his sleight of hand is beautiful. I didn't realize that L & L was releasing his stuff but if he performs at half of the capability he displayed at his lecture I saw a couple of years ago, these DVD's would still be worth their weight in gold.

Garret is great. Puts a lot of thought into his effects. He has an older tape out that's very good.

Do yourself a favor and get these. Every single item on these DVDs is great.
Message: Posted by: Brian Proctor (Oct 17, 2005 01:40AM)
I will be getting these. He has some GREAT coin magic. One of the best thing's I've learned in magic was Garrett's "Big Coin, Little Purse." That routine has to be one of the greatest ever in my book. It just looks so impossible watching that jumbo coin go in and out of that tiny purse. And it is so easy to master! I think he has great ideas on magic psychology. I hope this DVD set will cover more of his thinking. Unfortunately, my copy of his VHS tape had bad audio. So it would fade in and out on some stuff. But other than that, his magic is totally worth checking out.

The Garrett Thomas and Richard Osterlind DVDs arrived at Murphy's today so they should be available at your favorite dealer any day. Both sets are really worth getting. Great stuff.

The Ring Thing is going to be sold as a separate DVD. It's currently taught on GT's video which was released a few years ago. David Blaine is going to do the ring thing on his next special. Then the DVD will be released after that, and then, every kid is going to be doing the Ring Thing.
Message: Posted by: paisa23 (Oct 19, 2005 02:17PM)
I have never seen his ring thing, I would like to know where to get this.
Also his Hanging coins effect is really sweet. My only issue with it is he says he doesn't use soft coins which makes it a bit harder to get away with. I know he is teaching this on his set, Does anyone else perform this effect that might enlighten me?
Im waiting on the Osterlind set but I will get these after I looked through the Osterlind ones.

I've heard as well that this DVDs are great.
I read the trick review on LL.
Looking forward for review

You can find an explanation of his ring thing in his "Any Questions?" video. It will also be explained in an upcoming DVD that will be only about awesome ring effects. Yes, everyone will be doing this.

Prediction: In a couple years, you will be able to tell a magician from a laymen because of the ring on their finger.
Message: Posted by: shaunproof (Oct 20, 2005 11:10AM)
So, if everyone will be doing it, why jump on the bandwagon?

What skill level are thomas's new dvds?

Thanks
Message: Posted by: Alex Linian (Oct 20, 2005 08:30PM)
The difficulty level ranges from almost self-working effects (14 cents) to manipulation pieces (Ball in Bag). There is something for everyone.
Message: Posted by: magiCAD (Oct 21, 2005 08:19AM)
I'm guilty of having an index finger ring. I've seen him live and he is superb.
Message: Posted by: Joe Russell (Oct 21, 2005 04:55PM)
GARETT THOMAS COULD POSSIBLY BE THE GREATEST CLOSE UP PERFORMER OF ALL TIME. His magic is so well thought out and every single move he does from the expression on his face to the positioning of his toes has a reason and a purpose, his magic is so natural and smooth, he relates to his audience so well that it feels like everyones included and part of something special. If there is one set of DVD's you buy for the rest of your life make it these ones.

After watching 25 years of magicians, it's significant to this conversation that Garrett is one of my top 10 favorite magicians.

Along with what Joe and others have said, for me it's a mix of personality, deep thinking, extreme attention to detail, great hands, excellent presentations, and powerful effects.

I first met Garrett at one of the LVMIs and was blown away. You will not be disappointed. And if you have to practice, well that's a GOOD thing!

Does anyone know if this jumbo work is on any of these new dvds?

Also, GTs "Ring thing" appears on Greg Wilson's "In Action" Vol 3...
Message: Posted by: Alex Linian (Oct 21, 2005 09:20PM)
His skillz with jumbo coins are displayed in his "big coin little purse" routine in Vol. 1. Also, the "ring thing" can look a lot better than what you saw in Gregory Wilson's Hands.

Garrett is an awesome perforemr and as an Englishman, I don't use the word 'awesome' a lot. I have met him a couple of times and he is not only a great magician but a real nice guy too. His Big Coin Little Purse rouitne is one of the top magical thigns I have ever seen. He showcased some of the routines from the DVD at 4F. His ball & Bag routine should be something that could rival the Egg Bag for some people. I will definitely be getting the set.

Jon

p.s. Garrett also knows the place to get *THE* best chicken wings!

magician, as I had never heard of him it was a risky purchase. Order these you
will not be disappointed.

I will post a short review later, no time now. Cheers

The routine "Thought" (design duplication) is awsome on volume 2.I wonder which wallet he uses in this trick???

The "Brass Block " routine is also great on volume 3.
I know now what to do with my brass block trick lying in my drawer.

He's a great magician, but the "GREATEST CLOSE UP PERFORMER OF ALL TIME"? Time will tell that, as it's much to early to hang that distinction on him.

You only have to buy the Brass Block trick. It is a full routine ending with a chosen card in the matchbox in place of the Brass Block.Clever.

Granted stating that someone is the greatest is purely subjective, but he is definitely one of my favorite close up performers I have ever seen. I think he is one of the best.

It is called Matchbox Penetration. You actually have not only 2 holes in the block. But the gimmicked block
allows you to put 2 toothpicks in it.

Just got this set today...

UNBELIEVABLE Visual Magic!!!!!!!!!!

If you like Garrett's "collumn" in the Reel Magic DVD series with his "Try This At Home", then you'll love this set.

Besides teaching the mechanics of some clever ideas, he talks much about the psychology of why he does each move. Whether you do any of his effects in this 3-DVD set (and I am sure you will), you will definitely use his rational reasoning and innovative ideas in your OWN effects that you perform!!!!

Get these DVD's, if you haven't already... Don't be foolish!!!

You may need to buy some gimmicks or perhaps you already have them in your arsenal (as most are pretty common to magicians) or in your "Junk Drawer".

========================

My Favorite Routines:

*DVD 1*
--- Big Coin Little Purse
--- Blank Deck

*DVD 2*
--- Chinese Surprise
--- Abstract Math
--- Thought
--- Anniversary Waltz

*DVD 3*
--- Brass Block
--- Pen Thru Quarter (Laser)
--- Sharpy Shrink

......... Now I need to buy myself a Matchbox Penetration (Brass) Set!!!!!!

Hopefully this is the one:

I have to say I've owned these tapes for quite awhile and the two routines that have given me the most fun are the Big coin little Purse ( well worth the work put it) Garrets version of anniversary waltz. This in my opinon is the best version I've used in my clos-up to date.

Mr. Thomas presents a wonderful column on the Reel Magic DVD magazine called "“Try This At Home", where he imparts his knowledge to help people become better magicians/entertainers. That and David Regal's reviews are my favorite segments of the magazine.
