Sounds good to me as well. when they first came out on VHS back in the 80's they were $70 each. so I never got the whole collection. now I can.

You can have the whole set for about $165! Very reasonable price!

Each DVD seems to have more than one video included!!!!

Thank you, definitely on the wish list.

Message: Posted by: Phil C (Jan 11, 2006 01:51PM)
Seems like everyone's happy with the price.
So this is published material on VHS before?
Are these DVDs the exact duplicate, or are there anything new added?
I do not know a lot about the older version.
Thanks

The 15 Volumes on Stars of Magic were put onto 9 DVDs (ex. 5 Paul Harris onto 2 DVDs, 4 David Roth on 2 DVDs, 2 Garcia on 1 DVD, etc.). The DVDs are available individually at a suggested retail of $20 each or one can order the whole set at $150 suggested retail. The set is all packaged in a slip case, I believe the first time a set is offered in a slip case. This is a true bargain. There is GREAT material on these. The individual volumes are all in. The sets should be in to Murphy's shortly so will be available from your favorite dealer.

Are the Paul Harris DVDs a re-hash of his previous releases?

If you read the post above your's it states that the 5 stars of magic tapes were just put on to 2 dvds...so basically the old ph tapes were just transferred. Not trying to be mean, just stating the obvious.

What more does Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment DVDs offer that's not already on his Stars of Magic DVDs?

To answer A to Z. Paul's AOA series will have a lot of things from the AOA books. Things that have come about since the AOA books and things from previous tapes that have been streamlined or improved since their initial release.

Thanks Tom. You've answered my question. I'll save my monies and wait it out on the AOA videos to come out later this year.

Derek Dingle teaches the riffle pass in full detail on Stars Of Magic #7 (All Stars). Full instruction by the master of the pass!!
Message: Posted by: Shikina (Jan 16, 2006 12:18PM)
Don't jump ahead of yourself MagicChris. Derek Dingle's instruction on the pass could hardly be considered "full". He does a quick runthrough of the move- omitting many key details. The best part is that Dingle "messes up" the pass! Get this dvd because it has great material (including the segmant on the pass) but don't plan on trading in your Kaufman dvd so you can watch Dingle's explanation :)

Just received the 9 volume set today and it is outstanding! DVD is the only way to go. These are packed with all the same great effects from the masters. The DVDs contain nice menus so you can go right to the effect you want or browse, either presentation or explaination. They transferred everything, including the cheesy 1920's piano music (lol).

The first two and last two volumes are the best buy. Each contains a compilation of several videos by two great masters, Paul Harris and David Roth. There are a bunch of effects. A really good deal for $19.95.

The Dingle, Bilis, AllStars, and De Camps DVDs contain only one to one transfer, so you only get a few effects per dvd. I'm suprised they didn't combine those into one or two dvds and shorten the stack. But, they are still worth the $19.95, especially since these used to sell for about $70 each some years ago.

Great stuff. Don't hesitate on this set. I'm really happy to have these back on my shelf. Thanks go out to Murphy's Magic for resurrecting these gems. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the kind words on this. We wanted to keep the "integrity" of the individual performers (i.e., each has their own DVD) but when multiple volumes of a particular performer were present, we attempted to combine as much as possible to give the most bang for the buck. There are SO many gems in this series... as an example... check out the Bilis Switch... it is superb.

Thanks again.

I just watched the volume featuring Derek Dingle. I think it's great. Remember, it's not a video teaching you all the basics of a sleight (the pass). Rather, you can learn the routines as well as the thoughts from one of the greatest card manipulators.

Speaking of Dingle... I am eager to watch the 2 DVDs of Dingle that Meir Yedid is releasing... should be great.

I agree that it was appropriate to keep the performer's dvds seperate so as to keep thier individual integrity intact.

Check out "Color Stunner" performed by Paul "AOA" Harris on Volume 1 of Stars of Magic. Killer stuff!
Message: Posted by: shaunproof (Jan 19, 2006 08:59AM)
I'd get these PH DVDs instead of the new set. $40 vs. $200+. Most of the good stuff is on the $40 DVDs. So, why pay an additional $160 for a few new things, which don't really merit the difference. THis is all speculation, of course.

I placed my order for these already to replace my dying Tannen's videos.

I think the $175 that I spent was well worth it for all the DVD's. I understand the value side of it for the Roth and Harris DVD's, but even for one to one transfer these are a steal!!

If you're planning on breaking down the doors for Vol. 1 (Harris), caveat emptor:

Mr. Harris' well-deserved reputation as an extraordinary author and innovator is matched by neither his skills as an entertainer nor as a technician - at least not on this particular release.

Still, it's a worthwhile purchase for those (like me) seeking a "nostalgia kick." And you might catch yourself thinking, at more than one point, "what was he smoking during the break?" :o)

Wow, I disagree with this. I find Paul's little comments and antidotes to be quite amusing. Regardless Paul is a brilliant magician and there is nothing but top notch material on this DVD.

Overkill and Color Stunner are worth the entire price of the DVD alone and have become regular effects I show on a consistent basis. Color stunner is so good, the spectators just gasp at the end because they think the trick is over and are not expecting to be fried.

I would recommend this to younger magicians who may have never seen it. No caveat emptor warning should be made on either of Paul's Star's DVD's. Start breaking the door down now!

I have no issue with the quality of *material*, just the performance thereof - sloppy handlings (e.g., Ultimate Rip-Off, Strange Exchange, etc.) and strained patter. There's simply a huge (and obvious) difference in the quality of Paul's writing and performing. I don't see how one could objectively argue otherwise. But, in the end, this takes nothing away from the substantial contributions he's made to the field.

Even though there is not much in the set that I have not already seen or learned, I decided to order this set anyway as I have wanted it ever since I found out the VHS sets were going to be transferred to DVD. Classis effects by some of the World's classic magicians, and killer material.

As if I do not already have enough on my magic plate, this is all I need...18 hours of more material waiting in the wings to be viewed sometime in 2008. Anyone else get the entire set, or individual DVDS? Got my set for about $114.00 plus $11.00 shipping.

It is going to very hard to stare at this on the bottom of the "magic to do list" pile, so I better get crackin' :)

I have watched and rewatch and rewatched the first two Paul Harris discs and I can honestly say that I have almost never been more inspired. His effects are not only great in and of themselves but are fanastic launching pads for your own imagination to take off from. So many great moves and ideas.

I have only watched the first of the two David Roth volumes, and it is really good. Several routines, excellent explanations. I'd love to get the whole set at some point.

Do these follow the same format of performing the trick first, then the explanation? Do they use a live audience, or just perform for the camera?

There's a set on dbay selling for $110 plus $8 shipping to the US.

This is one of the "must buy" DVD sets that you cannot miss.

It's a fantastic set of DVD's. The Paul Harris DVD's are INCREDIBLE. The interview segments with him changed the way I view magic( and other things ).

An old post I know, but my wife recently surprised me with these as a gift. The price has come way down on these since they were first released ($76 now at Penguin). I'm only 2 discs in so far, but if the rest of the set is as good, there is some real treasure on these. Anyone with an appreciation for seeing some of the "legends" perform and teach will enjoy these.
