Topic: Junkyard Jim, The Hobo Magician
Message: Posted by: Jim Poor (Jan 11, 2006 11:32AM)
I'm home sick from work today and I MUST have fever. In my delerium, this thought came to me while I was contemplating the sanity of paying 8 bucks a piece for chinese coins to practice with when I could do the same effects with washers until I am ready to perform it for real. Anyway here is my idea....

Junkyard Jim does many of the "classic and well known effects" with a poor man's twist (and yes Poor is my REAL last name, so it fits ;) )

Instead of Ancient Chinese Coins, we have Old Rusty Washers
Ancient Mystery of the the Chinese Linking Rings becomes Modern Marvel of the Lincoln (like the car) Fanbelts.
Cups and Balls becomes Hubcaps and Ball Bearings.
Instead of a rabbit from a hat, A junkyard dog from a cardboard box.

And on and on.

I think it could be funny...
Thoughts?

Jim

Jim you are really on to something here. I like the character you are developing!

I can see the suit - all tattered and stained. The extreemly worn shoes with toes and sock hanging out! A felt fedora with a hole in the top... hmm kinda reminescent of Klem Kadiddlehopper!

Chop cup with a tin can. Card locater with a mouse trap (maybe shouldn't have a mouse in it.)

I don't think I would go with an odor either!

But you could really have fun here!

Yeah, it does sound fun. Maybe there is a silver lining to being miserable today ;)

Wonder if any of the gaffed coin makers can do a flipper washer or a washer shell...

I don't think this would be my full time charachter as the real me has a darker side, but still......

Washers are fun.
I've used them in place of a finger ring for some effects, in place of coins and for coin changes like 'Spellbound' and 'Pitch and Ditch'.

Benson Hubcap?
There are bolt and nut tricks that may fit in here.
Spring snakes in might be fun.

If you haven't read this yet, here's topic about Redneck Magic.

Fun stuff that may work with the Junkyard Jim idea.

Of course this Image sounds good to us Magicians but will the lay-man understand not knowing the tricks..... I think it will play well at a convention but not in public.

Two questions come to mind.

Funny to who?

What does the character want to do?

Those questions are as yet unanswered :) It was just a thought.

It might be funny to the layperson with the correct story about everything, including magic, being expensive. I dunno yet......

Does Jim use magic to make useful things from findings in the junkyard?

Does Jim find magical things in the junkyard?

Does Jim do the magic?

1. Maybe
2. Definately
3. Think so

I'm also thinking of a magic assistant in the form of my 3 footed junkyard dog, but we'll see how he does in training first....

Maybe I could levetate him on an ironing board or something :)

brought to mind an image of the dog sleeping on the ironing board, and the supports collapse and the dog sleeps through the levitation. The images of a trash barrel with a fire and another upturned so you have a flat surface seem appropriate.
