Sal,

sell some more stuff and keep the money for something from Wacky Wolf...I've sold tons of stuff over the past year in order to do this...in the end you get something you'll keep probably forever because you simply love performing the effect...start raiding that drawer, closet, bookshelf for stuff other people want...you'll be glad you did!

Stefan Schutzers new and amazing Floating Table (2006). The best version I have seen on the magic market: you can end the floating routine with hands "above" the table. Looks like real magic. Stefan showed me the effect at his magic theatre and it was an great experience. The design is very nice and the table is "big" in size
I think the cost is around 2000 dollar with a special made hard case plus a dvd instruction.

Howdy Steve, that's a Spill/Kennedy (not Cornelius) item...I wonder if Kennedy would make one for you. Have you ever seen or heard of Paul Kozak's use of the prop? It's brilliant!!!

Maybe I'm thinking like a magician but, what's the big deal with electric touch? I would think "okay, he has some type of electric device on him." Electricty is far from magic. And Midas, are you kidding me?! Which hand is it in for 500.00? Maybe I'm not able to see the "unlimited possiblities" but you can perform much stronger mentalism with less apparatus. I would put a fancy holdout in this category too.

If it were me, I would buy a ton of books. Al Baker's and David Berglas.

MagicalOdyssey,
Thought you asked for prices too? I see several that do not include this, but we probably cannot afford them anyway.

Oh, and a dictionary costs different amounts depending on several factors $3.99-$45

hahahahah
Message: Posted by: RickyD (Apr 5, 2006 03:35PM)
Years ago, I wanted to purchase the Origami illusion. Thought it was absolutely beautiful, but knew it was out of my price range. Over time, I decided it wouldn't fit in the style of magic I'm doing anyway.

To be honest, there aren't very many tricks I really want that are extermely pricey. I'm a simple guy, I guess. (Maybe something like a sub-trunk, but I've seen a place where I can buy the plans for $18 and make it for a whole lot less than a pre-assembled one would cost.)

Then there are some books. The Art of Astonishment series by Paul Harris ($100-$140) is the first one that comes to mind. And if I could find The Secrets of Brother John Hamman (by Richard Kaufman) somewhere -- it's been out of print for a while, so I'm sure any copy I could find would be pretty expensive.

Larry (Davidson)...thanks for the correction. I have seen Kozak using the Voodoo Doll thing in conjunction with the shocking chair. Excellent use of both by an excellent performer. I've emailed a few times with a guy (we both know him) who's owned a couple of the VD (sounds funny, huh?) effect, and he says it's pretty crude in construction. Apparently, reset is no walk in the park, either.

In very near future, you might be able to get it from THESE chaps.
Yeah, I saw that thread...But according to those designing it, it won't be anything like Harry's...For instance, it won't be sheer enough to see through, it won't be as light-weight, etc...

Still though, would be very cool...

I'm looking forward to the Nano-Technology that will allow video to be displayed on something as thin as newsprint (Kinda like the "Daily Prophet")...

Apply this to Card stock, and well....

Can you say AWESOME possiblities?

This one IS my top 10 ;)
"Nightmare at the Gallows" by Gary Oulette.

The curtain opens on a deadly gallows, a bare platform (imagine a tall table) sitting 10 feet above the stage, with a cross bar on top, from which hang 6 deadly nooses. The prop fills the stage. It is minimal in appearance - the stage is otherwise fully lit. There are six crash-test dummies already on the platform, with the nooses around their necks.

The platform has 6 trap doors, each opened by a rope. The six trap door ropes are attached to a "control panel", a low tech set of six levers. The magician demonstrates- pulling on a lever opens the trapdoor, which "hangs" one of the dummies.

Now, 3 spectators are chosen at random (no stooges).

The first reconnnects the trap door ropes (after mixing them up) to the levers, so that no one knows which lever will open which trap door.

The second chooses a noose position: where on the multiple gallows platform the magician must stand.

The third rolls the dice.

The magician climbs up onto the platform, removes the dummy at the selected number, and the noose is now secured around his neck. Next the die is rolled, and whatever number is on top, that number lever is pulled. A trap door opens, a dummy falls, the magician survives.

But the game is played over and over, a grisly Russian Roulette with nooses, until all the dummies have been hung, the magician surviving by fate alone. You can cut the tension with a knife.

Just as he accepts applause, something goes wrong. His trap door opens and he plunges down, violently hanging himself.

But before anyone can react, he suddenly comes to life, and floats up back to the platform, the trapdoor closing once again beneath him, reversing time.

Only $80,000

I wish!

Mike

Top 10???

Can't even think of half that. Really, since recovering ALL my magic, I find I need very little. I have an incredible collection. To me, anyway. Yeah, I'd like a set of Owen Linking Rings, or Sherwood Cups. Or Sean B's PTS. But, I can do MUCH better with what I already have!

I need things like Flash Cotton, and things that need refills, but new stuff? Very little interests me. I like things in the $25 to $35 range. If I do get something new, that's my limit. My biggest purchase was $400+ for a custom-made Die Box. Teak wood. Made like a fine Wizard's Herb Chest. My prized possesssion!

I have no interest in adding any more to my "collection". I will never in my lifetime perform every one of these. But, I do look at used stuff. A decent Square Circle. Jap Box. That kinda thing. I might spring for a set of 1.75 inch Wooden Billiard balls from Germany. Or order new Rice Silks from Silk King Studios.

Beyond that, my pension is tight. I get by. One thing I DON'T need is new magic! LOL!

7 GRAND! For a freakin' MAGIC trick! I could buy a car! My gosh. There are people with that kind of money. Drop 5 grand on a hobby. Not blink an eyelash either. I have always been poor. $13,000 to $15,000 a year my whole career. I am astounded that people can spend so much money...I cannot imagine it...

You'll need an igniter. You can make one out of a BIC lighter. Not sure where to buy one today.

I've always dreamed of a Blaney Ladder Illusion! I also think it would be great to get a few of Chance Wolf's creations too especially the Hip Hop Hares and Chicken Sword. The Magellan Levitation would also be cool to own too.

It's funny that you mention these in the same post. When Walter saw me perform the Magellan levitation in Fort Worth several years ago, he was blown away. I asked him for an endorsement, and he declined. He said that if people knew about the Magellan levitation, he'd never sell any more of his.

Since I retired from the motion picture industry and am now teaching for living I have much less money to spend on magic than in the past (what I mostly buy now are BOOKS) and I've also reached an age where I think maybe I'm finally immune to the dreaded "gotta have it!" fever that hits whenever the "latest and greatest" thing comes along (although that still occasionally flares up in the dealers room !) , but here , in no particular order are my top 10 items that I can't afford at the moment:

Magic Page by Page - by Pat Page (book ; costs over $100 with shipping from the U.K. , but I WANT this book ... and such a bargain , knowing Patrick Page there's probably $10,000 worth of ideas contained in the book)

(Ok, speaking of Patrick Page , I'd like to be able to make up his "Easy Money" effect with real $100 bills !)

Alan Shaxon the Sophisticated Sorcerer - by Alan Shaxon (another must have book for me )

Greater Magic - by John Northern Hilliard , Kaufman & Greenberg reprinting , 1994 (missed buying this at the time and always regretted it. The occasional copy of the Kaufman & Greenberg edition that shows up for sale is usually in the $200 - $300 range ; just haven't been able to justify spending that much because I do have an older copy of Greater Magic )

VAPR - by Will Tsai
Thumb Tip Flash – by Marc Antoine
(these two utility items used as "special effects" to augment existing tricks )

Ghost Ring - by Joe Porper ( do I really "need" this to perform Linking Rings ? Well, the truth is no one "needs" it , but it's always intrigued me and I "want" it , so there. )

NewsFlash Torn & Restored Newspaper - by Axel Hecklau (looks like real magic)

Vanishing Bird Cage - made by Jim Riser (with the take-up reel)

and ... MORE BOOKS would round out my Top 10 list . I'm sure if I thought about it there are more individual tricks I WANT , but can't afford , such as big ticket items like Losander's "Floating Table" deluxe model, Blaney's "Step Ladder" Suspension and/or a Harbin "Chair Suspension" , "Through a One Inch Hole" by Jim Steinmeyer , an Owen "Sword Basket" , Dekolta "Vanishing Lady" , etc, ... Of course once it tips over to talking about performing illusions the other thing I can't afford is to hire and train an assistant or assistants ... So good books are the best value in the long run.

Alan Shaxon's book and Pat Page's book are my next purchases for sure.
