Topic: The Complete Underwater Magic Act!
Message: Posted by: dr chutney (Nov 28, 2002 06:01AM)
This was my wacky 50th post but it did its own vanishing act, along with other 27, Nov posts, so I re-introduce it for your contemplation.

A large clear water tank on stage. The performer climbs the steps and enters the tank to perform a series of tricks underwater, either with or without an obvious breathing apparatus.

But what does he perform?

Snorkel into wand
Torn and restored flipper
Sawing the mermaid in half
Houdini's Water Torture Escape???
A very high Balducci Levitation

What else could feature in this underwater show?

Dr. Chutney,
You may be on to something here!
I can think of several magic acts that should be held under water!

Live from Venice
"David Blaine - Street Magic"

How about the Razor Blades done with fish hooks?

On Champions of magic somebody did card manipulation and an appearance in a swimming pool. It was pretty awsome. :wow:

It was Luis DeMatos (sp?) I believe. It was kinda cool and different. It would be interesting to take the idea further. Clearly the greatest underwater magic achievement would be 'Card on Ceiling'.

Do whatever 10 minute routine that suits your persona BUT stay underwater for those ten minutes without seemingly using any breathing apparatus or getting out of the tank! Don't let on this fact in the beginning or in the patter, just have the audience wondering it themselves after some time.

BTW, cover the tank at the end and vanish, that would be a great closing effect!

Oh yeah, Princess Tenko has performed this vanish before and Franz Harary has an illusion where a lady assistant appears in a tank of water he previously used to perform a TT silk production. Just so you know.

Bye. :wavey:

Anyone remember the show in the 70s called
"That's Incredible"? I remember one of the acts on there being a magician performing underwater (spongeballs?) They even showed it in slow motion to show how good his skills were. It was one of the few acts on there that you could actually believe. There was another where a man could turn pages with his mind. He claimed to be "real" not a magician.

If you want to keep with an underwater/sea thematic, you could work out a method of Curtis Kam's Spot the Card Catching Cowrie, where a selected card appears folded up inside the "jaws" of a two and a half inch wide Cowrie....

The girls appearance on Champions of Magic was too obvious though...
