I was just wondering, has anyone ever played or heard of anyone playing any practical jokes on any magicians.

During a tour in Darwin (Northern Territory) I got very badly sunburned during the day. That night I had to do the show (which involved a being tied with 100' of rope and escaping) and I was so sunburned that even thinking about touching my skin was painful.

My fellow cast members Peter Gray and Christof!! suggested I cover myself in yoghurt, that would relieve the pain.

I was willing to try anything. The only yoghurt I could find was strawberry flavoured. They laughed so much (and I smelled so strong) I did forget about the pain for the duration of the show.

Now I never did find out if the yoghurt suggestion was a practical joke, or I was just an idiot for using a flavoured dessert as opposed to a natural culture...

Anyway, they sure got a lot of fun out of it!

So I'm curious... anyone out there experienced any magical pranksters?

Bev Bergeron has written a couple of articles in The Linking Ring about magicians playing jokes on one another. I'll try to find one or two of the articles later.

Back in the early days of working in magic shops for other folks there was a group of magicians in Orange County and L.A. that pulled what I still think are some of the funniest Practical Jokes of all time. They weren't on magicians, but they were 'by' magicians.

I won't say who was involved, but here is my favorite. This group had gotten hold of a classic Vanishing Bird Cage ala Blackstone, et al. In one joke they would walk up to a Mail Box on Hollywood Blvd. and 'apparently' put the cage and it's small bird into the box! They made sure that folks sitting waiting for a bus saw them do this. They would then melt away, change clothes (take off trench coat, sun glasses, etc.) and come back to watch the fun. Needless to say it was almost always hilarious as folks would hold open the mail box door so the bird would not expire.

Maybe this small story will inspire a whole new generation of magical joksters! Do though try to avoid doing jokes that might look as if you are leaving bombs about. Best,

That's VERY funny! Sounds like the inspiration behind T.H.E.M.
