Topic: Bill and Ben

The present sum of Bill and Ben’s ages is 44. Ben is twice as old as Bill was when Ben was half as old as Bill will be when he is 3 times as old as Ben was when he was 3 times as old as Bill. How old is Bill and how old is Ben?

22 and 22...?

If they are both the same age "...when he was 3 times as old as Bill." could never have happened. /Tomas

Ben is 28 and Bill is 16

28 & 16 don't work. Working backwards from 28 & 16, Ten years ago, Ben was three times as old as Bill (18 & 6). Bill will be 3 times as old as Ben's age then (18) in 38 years, when he's 54. Ben was 1/2 as old as that last year, at 27. When Ben was 27, Bill was 15. But according to the question, Ben is supposed to be twice as old as Bill's age at that time; thus, Ben would have to be 30..but he isn't, he's only 28.

Ben is 27.5 years old and Bill is 16.5 years old.

At 27 1/2 & 16 1/2, Ben was three times as old as Bill 11 years ago, when they were 16 1/2 & 5 1/2. Bill will be 3 times Ben's age at that point when he's 49 1/2. When Ben was half THAT age (24 3/4), Bill was 13 3/4. Ben is currently twice THAT age, or 27 1/2. From my point of view, looks like a point for Stanalger.
