Last weekend I attended the Cavalcade of Magic in Arkansas. It was very small convention, put on for the last 35 years by Bill Pitt, past President of the IBM. The 2 tricks that stood out for me, from his manipulation portion of his act were the Color Changing Card Case and the Fan of Cards to Card Case. These were the fabulous invention of a performer and manufacturer of magic by the name of Dave Emerson.

Dave displayed a card box, which he removed his deck from, he passed his hand over the card case and it changed color, this got great reaction from the audience. He has a nice flourish that he does of tossing the case into the air and catching it face on to the audience. He proceeded with his short card fan and production routine, then showed a fan of cards. Closed the fan and in it place was a card box. The audience gasps at this transformation.

Dave is a very nice person, but I had to express my thoughts and feeling about these simple in working effects on the audience and myself. Most magicians would pass this by, because it is so simple in construction and working. This is one of those moments in magic, were real magic happens. Of course you only know this by the reaction of the audience, as you know the secret after purchasing. For most it will lie in a drawer, or go on a magic auction site. As a matter of fact, there is one listed now on Magic Auction. Some fool does not know the value of this piece of apparatus he is letting go.

This is the kind of trick that pulls a card act together and makes it come full circle for the audience. I am very reluctant to inform the Café members about this effect, as I really want to keep it to myself.

He has been making this effect for some time, and this is the 1st I have seen or heard of it. But want an effect it is for a manipulator. Pure Genius!! So I will not give any details on how to get this wonderful piece of magic, as Dave does not have a web site, good for me, and he is not known as a super star, also good for me. Oh, and the price he ask for these miracles is ridicules to say the least. It is worth hundreds of dollars to a working performer.

I compare my reaction to these effects the same as when in 1980 I seen the Fickle Fire to cards transformation in Washington DC convention. This was famous M. Sakoh invention from Japan. One minute he held burning flames in each palm of his hands and with the flick of the wrist, he had a fan of cards in each hand. Then he reversed the miracle fan of cards to palms of fire.

P.S. These is not a close-up trick, they are to be presented in front of a large group or audience, such as a performance stage.

This sounds WONDERFUL!

Is the card box for poker or bridge sized cards? I would love to purchase one, are you really keeping this a secret from all of us Bill?

The one on Magic Auction was taken, guess someone knows a good trick when they see it. They are bicycle poker size cards. I much perfer to match my bridge size cards as that is what I use for fan productions and fanning.

Of course he does, he said he is getting tired of making magic, but I have another one coming, just in case he stops.

Well it sounds to me like the perfect finish to a card manipulation/production act. I would love to purchase one from him if you ever let us know how, it seems like it would work nicely in my act. But I do understand, some things are just too good to let go.

I think I recall Cyril Harvey, or was it Tommy Wonder, who did something a tad bit similar? hmm Not 100% sure. it certainly was not as involved or detailed as what is described here. I just recall someone playing around with this concept and it playing huge at the convention I was at. It certainly sounds wonderful.

Just guessing... any Henry Evans ideas involved in this effect?

Being this is the 1st time I have ever witnessed this miracle, I have no knowledge of its origin. I just know it is great! I think it is before Henry Evans.

Being Cyril Harvey does commerically available effects, it is know wonder he knows a good item when he sees it.

Tommy Wonders deck is very involved, much more then this simple principle.
