If you could only keep 5 books on magic which ones would they be?
Message: Posted by: leondo (Jan 24, 2003 09:48AM)
The 3 Jinx volumes would be 3 of them!
Ted (Leondo)
Message: Posted by: therntier (Jan 24, 2003 10:41AM)
The three AoA books from Harris, then I would try to get a double copy of Vol 1 and 2 from AoA. That makes 5
Message: Posted by: JimMaloney (Jan 24, 2003 11:00AM)
For technique:
Modern Coin Magic, by J.B. Bobo
Card College, by Roberto Giobbi (can all the volumes count as one, or does each volume need to be listed seperately?)

For getting me to think:
Theatrical Close-up, by Peter Samelson
Mastering the Art of Magic, by Eugene Burger
Strong Magic, by Darwin Ortiz

And it's so tiny, I'm gonna sneak it in with one of the other books:
Growing in the Art of Magic, by Eugene Burger

Thanks for the replies so far and keep 'em coming. If we get enough replies I will post a tally of the results.

By the way, feel free to include a series as one book. For example, AOA all three volumns can count as one of your five.

Tough call. I'd have to decide between the following:

Greater Magic
Card College
New Modern Coin Magic
Strong Magic
Tamariz Trilogy
Card Craft
Books of Wonder
Classic Magic of Larry Jennings
Apocalypse
Jinx
The James File
Close Up Card Magic
Secrets of Bro John
Smoke and Mirrors

If push came to shove, simply because of the amount of material, I guess I'd go with the following (although my answer might be different next week):

Greater Magic
Card College
New Modern Coin Magic
Apocalypse
Jinx

This is always fun - Like Mr Guinn: my selections are whimsical at best, and are subject to change at any moment

Apocalypse
The James File
Workers
Hugard's Magic Monthly
The Jinx

As you can see: I went for volume

Now ready for something sick - This will show you how far behind I am in my reading

The next 5 books I have but haven't taken out of the plastic wrap

Constant Fooling
Book of Wonder VOL 2
The Mind and Magic of David Berglas
Personal Collection
Stanley Collins

I'll stop here - But believe it or not - I have 4-5 more books I haven't even opened

I need some free time!!!

Hey guys,

Quit cheating. The question was which 5 BOOKS, not which 5 sets of books. Tarbell is out right off the bat for having more than 5 volumes.

Sticking with the original parameters (of 5 BOOKS), you'd have to pry my cold dead fingers off of:

The Jinx (3 volumes) by Ted Annemann
The New Modern Coin Magic by J.B. Bobo
Magic and Showmanship by Henning Nelms

Groan!! I had forgotten about the one volume The Compleat Invocation. What to do, what to do? Darn!! I just won't give up The Jinx and I am having a hard time giving up the Bobo or Nelms books.

Robert, it's tempting...but I think I'll have to pass on The Compleat Invocation and hope that The Jinx will "take up the slack".

Best regards,

The only 5 my dad hasn't barrowed and never returned yet. The rest have been hidden some where, but Im not sure exactly where and neither is he. Thats what I get for having a dad who likes to use your stuff before his own. I guess it is because my stuff is cooler an up-to-date.

In keeping with the original question about MAGIC books and not confusing it with MENTALISM books I would keep:

The Trick Brain - Fitzkee (the bible for magicians)
Tarbells Course
Close-up Illusions - Ouellet
Magic of Slydini
Close-up card magic - Lorayne

Considering that I only have MWCCIM, and RRTCM, I guess it would be those two.

This is a great thread. For me, it would be:

1. Close-Up Card Magic -- Harry Lorayne
2. Pasteboard Presentations -- Terry LaGerould
3. Stars of Magic
4. Modern Coin Magic -- Bobo
5. Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic

I just picked up "Lint" and am looking forward to it. It that on anybody's list? Also, I'd love to get a copy of Bannon's Impossibilia, but it doesn't seem like there are any copies in existence!

The jinx
Mind myth and magick
Psychological subtleties
Full facts of cold reading
Principles of mentalism

A very interesting question I have to say. If I were to choose 5 absolutes, would go Tarbell, Bobo, Royal Road, Expert, then maybe Carnycopia. I can honestly credit any of these books for the magic I do.

But then theres also 13 steps as well in fact no insult to John Carney I think I'll trade the 2 off as much as I love Caneycopia I feel 13 steps should be in my 5th position when talking absolutes.

Royal Road
Mnemonica
Try The Impossible
Bobo
Simply Simon

Magic of Ascanio all volume
Juan Tamariz Trilogy
Apocalypse all volume
Card College all volume
Tarbell Course all volume
Message: Posted by: sirbrad (Jan 17, 2015 08:22PM)
Tough one as I have several thousand books on magic alone that no one would ever make me get rid of lol.

But just for fun:

Tarbell Course
Apocalypse
Magic Menu
The Magical Arts Journal
The Amatuer Magician's Handbook (Because that book was my first magic book at age 7.)

But I also love all my other books especially the magic theory ones a lot. So I must have them ALL! :bat:

James it has been 12 years since you updated the list.

3. The Royal Road to Card Magic
4. The Stars of Magic
5. Bobo's New Modern Coin Magic

But I'd give up all 5 for the Ron Bauer Private Studies Series...

Master Notebook of Magic by Bob Wagner
Maximum Entertainment by Ken Weber
The Magic Book by Harry Lorayne
Tarbell #1
Book of Secrets by John Carney
Message: Posted by: Joey_Z (Jan 18, 2015 08:07PM)
As I have a rather modest collection at this point, I wouldn't have to do much cutting:

1. Card College 1 & 2 (and I assume the rest when I complete the series)
2. Amateur Magician's Handbook
3. Focus
4. Royal Road
5. Bobo

Edit: Dang...I forgot Tarbell...substitute that for Bobo...maybe...
