Topic: Dove from Fire book

Hey guys, I've got a couple of questions in mind. First of all, I'm trying to come up with a fire and dove act and I've been wanting to produce a dove from a fire book. I've not tried this yet and only will after making the right gimmicks. It's the same concept as a bowl o rama. What do you guys think of this and are there any ideas for a dove and fire act?

Secondly, I learned the dove from book in the Ian Adair video( which is really good for starters) and I want to make my own dove from fire book. Kevin James, is currently owning rights to the bowl o rama and Puck magic for the parrot from sketch pad. Are there legal issues if I perform the dove from fire effect?

Thirdly, asking out of plain curiosity, is someone not allowed to make his own parrot from sketch pad, I've seen the secret on several vids so isn't it a free to use secret? Or must Puck magic be contacted?

Hoping to get the right answers... in order please... Cheers!!

Dove and Fire acts are hardly new. As long as it's your patter and props are not belonging to others you should be pretty safe. New applications of old technology are seldom protected.

I do not share your opinion that appearing on video or in acts of others makes something free. Distribution is not ownership. A knock-off is still a knock-off.

Good Luck!

I would love to know where you saw the workings of my pad on video? Although my design is different from Kevin's I still give him full credit for the concept and pay a royalty for each unit sold.

My time and work are worth a lot to me and I don't appreciate anyone thinking it is OK to knock off my creativity without permission. The magic community is very small and your reputation is all you have. My advice for you is to give credit where it's due and you will long and happy life in magic.

First off Fire is out. Ask the contestants at the IBM and SAM contests this year. Unless you want to pay a fire marshall and for a permit every show.

Puck is correct. Keep to the high ground and you will last in this business. Rip an idea from someone you will not last.

Howard Flint came up with the Bowling Ball from Briefcase and had Doty build the first one. It was ripped off time and time again. It is still associated with those in the know as Howard's trick. The question is do you want to be known on your own merits or as someone doing someone else's effect.

I understand where you're coming from Puck, and should I want to get this officially built, I would even consider talking to you about producing it. The issue here is where I've seen it. As far as I remember, the dove from book effect was shown in Ian Adair's dove magic video. It was also explained.(as far as I can remember. I watched this when I was about 13). I really do not know if the parrot from sketch pad was around then. that is like 6 yrs back. So, to me the effect has always existed. Bowl o Rama is really unique and kudos to Kevin James for that. As for the parrot from sketch pad, I know that you have put in a lot of work into it. But it has been done before with doves and even parakeets. I do not question your work and in no way do I want to rip your product off. Its just an issue of the DOVE FRM FIRE BOOK.

Kyle, Richard gave you the best advice in his first sentence. Don't bother with fire, you can't use it in most places at all, or if you can its a huge hassle. Its just not worth it.
