January 11: RIP Maila “Vampira” Nurmi
Fango is saddened to report that actress, horror host and Goth icon Maila “Vampira” Nurmi has died. According to Nurmi friend and Arkham Studios FX artist Bryan Moore, the actress passed peacefully in her sleep Thursday, January 10 at her home in Hollywood, CA. She was 86.

Born Maila Elizabeth Syrjäniemi on December 21, 1921 in Finland, Nurmi made her way to Hollywood (after her family relocated to Ohio) at age 17 to pursue a career as an actress. She’s best known for her 1950s persona of Vampira, a character she created and which she used to great effect as the horror hostess of THE VAMPIRA SHOW (a weekly series which aired on a pair of Los Angeles TV stations from 1954-1955, and was nationally syndicated) and in director Ed Wood’s cult classic PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE (1959). Nurmi’s influence on horror, fashion (Elvira, anyone?), film and music (punk-Goth acts The Misfits and The ***ed both recorded songs about her) can be felt to this day.
I've watched and rewatched VAMPIRA, THE MOVIE, a biographical film made of her this past year. This grand old lady has some excellent advice on performance.

Does anybody know which Vampira came first, Gloria (Marcom) or Maila?

In my Universe, Vampira passed away nearly 6 years ago and has been much darker since that time.

Malia Nurmi began her role as TV horror host Vampira in 1954. Her look was based on the Charles Addams cartoons. Gloria Marcom began her Vampira act around 1960 while married to Tom Palmer (later known as Tony Andruzzi), which is when the Vampira book was released.

Thanks, Jim. I have always been confused by the whole movie Vampira/Magic Vampira/Vampirella thing. At least I have a costume to go by to know which ones were/are Vampirella.

Then again, I was thrown when they switched Darrens on Bewitched, so maybe it's just me.

RIP Vampira.

I remember watching her in Plan Nine when I was a kid. It was so bad it was good! I still like seeing it once in a while.
