Topic: Having trouble keeping a dove clean

I am having trouble keeping one particular dove of mine clean. She always seems to get really dirty. I bought her from a pet store ( Bad mistake) and I think the store owner might have used soap on the bird's feather not knowing the danger. However if this is not the case ( I'm guessing) then this female dove must be some kind of tomboy.

If the previous owner did use soap how would I clean the doves?
If the previous owner didn't use soap what are some ways to keep this dove clean? I've tried spraying the dove but she never seems to clean her self!

does anyone have any advice?

First, do you know how she is getting dirty?

Is your cage clean?
Do you use newspaper on the bottom of the cage (DON'T)

Most pet shops carry a product called feather glo or something like that. It comes in a spray bottle. Gently spray your dove and make sure you get her wet, even under the wings but be careful of it's eyes.

She will preen herself after that. If the natural oils have been removed by bathing with soap or something like that, it will come back but it will take a little time.

We used to use Basic H to clean the chickens.
And we would allow the chickens to graze our grass
and they love to play in the mud.

Like David says, natural oils come back.
Just like it does on us humans.
