Hey all,

I know this is related to who you have seen and personal tastes, but I am interested in who your top ten comedy magicians might be...

3. Aldo Colombini

I have seen them all for over 65 years. There has never been another magician in my long life who is as naturally, spontaneously, unpredictably funny as Aldo.

With Aldo, it's not an act. He is just inherently hilarious.

Isn't it hard to list them in order, everyone is funny in a diffrent way...
Message: Posted by: Eric Lott (Aug 21, 2008 02:14PM)
I'm glad someone mentioned Whit Haydn. He really is a funny performer. I'm not sure if we're including guys who have passed on, but Billy McComb was incredibly funny.

It's interesting how everyone has a different definition of funny. Some think Jay Sankey should be on the top ten list. He is the farthest thing from funny in my opinion.

I don't think I've laughed harder in my life than the night I saw David Acer lecture and perform.

Since I do not know each and every one of the performers mentionned above the following classified list is not to be considered as argumental but as personal experience (there are however magicians in the list above, that I know well and that I would classify as very entertaining but not as "funniest", but easily admitting that this is a matter of personal culture, and also some names that I do not find funny at all -it must be me...)
David Williamson
Dana Daniels
Tom Mullica
Bob Read
Johnny Thompson (as Thomsoni company)
Whit Haydn
Fielding West

It's some time since MAGIC's top 10 Funniest Magician list came out; and it's very interesting to see what other magicians have been suggested on here as deserving of a place. Of course we are all influenced by who we have seen and when we have seen them. I'm from the UK and saw Paul Daniels and Wayne Dobson at the top of their game; unsurprisingly they would both be in my top ten.

I think the one unfortunate aspect of the list was that there wasn't one magician outside the US on it. I appreciate that MAGIC is very much a US magazine; but even so you would have thought there was at least one magician from the rest of the planet who deserved a top ten entry!

Having said that I wouldn't argue with the top two - David Williamson and Mac King. To my mind David Williamson would probably win because his humour is totally natural and spontaneous: he is someone who has 'funny bones', whereas with most other comedy magicians you can see the 'joins'. The last time we saw David in the UK was at the British Ring of the IBM. He 'lectured' for an hour and a half and was absolutely hilarious. It was genius at work. Why he's not a huge star in the US I've got no idea.
Message: Posted by: Sealegs (Sep 11, 2008 04:48PM)
As Ian says the make up of your own individual top ten list is going to be influenced by who you've seen. As I'm from the UK there would quite a few Brits on my top ten list and Ian Keable's name would most definitely be on it.

I haven't seen enough to have a top 10. (Unfortunately!)

But .. I HAVE seen Mac King and he definately would be at the top!

I have always liked Penn and Teller but saw their show in Vegas several years back and was suprisingly bored by it. Way too talky for me.

I also like Jay Sankey but don't find him all that funny. Maybe live would be different. I REALLY like Bill Malone but unfortunately, my wife finds him creepy.

On the top of my list to go see live are Jeff Hobson and Amazing Jonathan.

Mike

Here's four, anyway:

1. Jay Sankey - he seems to get funnier on repeat viewing. At first when I saw his DVD's, I thought "hmmm, he needs an editor or a director or something..." but now, watching his id spasm in all directions is a highlight of the show.

2. Greg Wilson - he's sharp and witty, and very quick with the quip (not slow with the slope...)

3. Gaetan Bloom - that accent and attitude... it's like that Lithuanian guy from Taxi decided to do stand-up. But he doesn't need the schtick, as his magic speaks for itself.

4. Jon Allen - just based on his "Spectators Do Not Exist" DVD, he seems pretty funny, sharp and likeable

We had a Magician of the Year Gala for Marvyn Roy a week ago. I put up the pictures of the event on our IBM site. You can check them out at http://www.ibm257.com.

Top Ten Lists are short hand for thinking and odius at best.

We seem to need to grant the title “Comic Genius” to someone every couple of years, as if by ordaining them great, we need not dig any further for true humor. True humor requires that we re-examine that which is being parodied. It forces us to pause and ponder; and who wants to work that hard? True humor does not induce the immediate proclamation, “That was funny!” Thus the Comic Genius is, out of necessity, seldom a good comic.

This must be restricted to well known magicians, because if you ignore most of what I write in "now that's funny" I would nominate myself.
Or is it bad form to say you're funny? Maybe you just have to be there.

Probably bad form to write that your IQ is around 148 but who would believe that statement coming from a self-promoting funny magician either?

Pretty much all of the above. I'm probably showing my age, but I saw Roy Benson perform at a convention in the Catskills many years ago. He was the MC of the show and at one point performed his psychiatrist routine. It was very funny, and way ahead of its time. I find it very hard to pick top tens. 10. Michael Rubenstien

Bill Malone is the bomb, Mac King probably should be #2 but Rick and Kyles humour is just my kindof comedy... and I put Michael Rubeinstien there just to mess with him ;)

I am new to magic, so not much experience. Even when I have seen his name a few times in the thread, my first pick would be....Juan Tamariz! If some people do not even have him on their lists it means I am missing quite a few funny performers out there. One more line in my to-do list!
