Topic: New to here, and looking for ideas

Hello, nice to meet you all. I has been a nameless reader on the Magic Café for awhile but this is my first time posting here. I has been doing magic as an hobbyist for couple years, and I was always want to learn more about gospel magic.

Just a little of my background, I am mainly a learn-by-myself on magic and I did some performing in my church (it is a church mainly serving the Chinese community in Toronto, Canada) for a few causal events. Although the number of Chinese churches are increasing, but Gospel magic is an absolutely new concept to this community. Even though I did include some gospel messages in my routines but the audiences are still not able to link gospel and magic together. Fortunately, most people in the church do have an open mind and know magic is just a performing art, and able to accept it to be done in the church. I do have a very strong desire to bring gospel magic into this group of the community, and I am looking for ideas I can use.

Thanks to our Lord, I will have a chance to perform a 30 minutes show in my church's upcoming VBS at August to a group of children ages between 4 to 11. However, I don't have much experience and tricks for children because I works mainly on tricks for older audiences, but the good thing is, I still got a few months to plan and practice. So, I would like to collect all your brains as much as I could. At this point, the VBS administrators still think I will only do a regular magic show like the magicians they hired in previous years, which had nothing to do with the theme/topic of the VBS. This time, I want to do something which will relate to the bible points, and put some gospel messages in my routines, so I can entertain the children as well enhancing the bible points they learned. My problem is coming up tricks/routines that I can use to combine with the bible points. Right now, I know the main bible points for the VBS will be Jesus gives us Power to be Thankful, to Help the Others, to be Brave, to Live forever and to spread His words.

At this point, I am just looking for raw ideas, regardless the kind of props or tricks which I can easily buy or learn. Ideas on how to incorporate the bible points are what I wants.

Thanks in advance, and please include me in your prayer.

You may want to visit my web site and look at some of the spots I've done for TV, especially the children's spots and that may give you some ideas to use...

God bless you...

First off; welcome and God Bless you for what you are doing and want to do. You came to the right place because there are many people here who have tons of knowledge and have hearts for the Lord.

Certainly go to Terry Owens' site. I learned more from watching his videos than you can get from a shelf full of gospel magic books and DVD's. Does your church use a specific theme to get those points you mentioned across?

Thanks, Terry and Ethan. Those are good stuffs you have on your web-sites. Tony, regarding on the theme of the VBS, I believe this year's theme is a science lab, which I also put into consideration when I am planing for my routines, however, I don't want to restrict my show too much but I for sure would like to make some connection to the theme as well.

I think you can use a chemical magic trick to teach about forgiveness.
"Needle thru Balloon" to teach about to be brave
"Snow Storm in China" is good to teach about spread His Word.

Hope this help.

Thanks, Budihaha, for sure this help.

I am actually thinking on the similar line. Needle thru Balloon and Snowstorm were some of the tricks I was considering, except Snowstorm would be a bit mess and the church may not like it since they will use the stage/altar after the show.

Any suggestions/ideas are welcome and for sure will be helpful. I consider myself a newbie in gospel magic, anything for sure will help.

You could use the Professor's Nightmare to illustrate the Trinity.
If you would like my whole routine, just email me.

Also turning water into wine is very easy - follow up by saying God still does miracles - not water into wine, but sinners into saints.

You could also use cut & restored rope to illustrate lives damaged by sin are restored by Christ.

Hope these help.
