Topic: Disappearing a hat?
Message: Posted by: Demon5magic (May 4, 2008 03:26PM)
So a week or so ago, my friend asked me to make his hat disappear, and I had no idea how, are there any books ect, on this type of disappearances?

You could use a mirrior box or a square circle.

But I don't think he will be able to do a vanish using a mirror box or a square circle on a moments notice

"Well... OK. I'll make it disappear. But I don't know how to bring it back."

"Of course I CAN. However, the only method I know involves a bed sheet, a cage, and a white tiger."

"First, I need a paper bag. Then I cut the hat into small pieces..."

"Unfortunately, I don't know how to make it disappear, but I CAN turn it into a brightly colored old lady's hat with flowers. Permanently."

You could try a variation of the old pen/wand behind ear approach.

Hold a shot glass or something in your hand. Cover with hat on count of three. Fail to vanish shot glass try again but place hat on head on the upswing.

Or paper balls over head approach. Could be good with an accomplice who catches the hat on his head then circles and approaches from a different direction and asks what you are doing then feigns astonishment when he discovers your hat on his head.

Or you could make a hat out of chocolate and eat it when they're not looking.

Then there's always the line, "Step one, I put your cap down the front of my pants..."

Funny stuff man, funny stuff.

I can tell you exactly how to do it.
1 Baseball cap.
1 Jumbo Paper clip - the REALLY big kind not the normal ones.
1 Untucked overshirt.
1 A crisp $20 bill

1.Put the paper clip on the back of your belt.
2.Put on the overshirt.
3.Borrow the hat.
4.Take off the over shirt to use as cover.
5.Hold the shirt with both hands at shoulder level, but let the shirt cover your hands and the hat.
6.Go up and down with the shirt in a dramatic fashion.
7.While going up and down, transfer the shirt to being draped over your left arm - it shouldn't look any different from teh spec's view. This frees up your right hand to move the hat.
8.Switch to a side to side movement. This hides the movement of your arm to the paper clip on your back.
9.Slide the bill of teh hat into the paper clip to hold it behind you.
10.Bring your right hand back to the shirt and wisk it away dramatically!
11.Immediately put the shirt back on.
12.Tell your friend that you can get his hat back, but you'll need to go to a bathroom to do it.
13.Send the $20 to:

There's always the old hanging it on a stick or cane method. Produce a metal cane. Tuck it under your arm about waist level having it stick out the back a little. Take hat and appear to throw it up into the air, but instead hang it on the cane behind back. Takes a little practice but is fun to do.

"Man, as your friend I have to tell you... your problem isn't your hat!" :)

Maybe I'm over thinking this but why even disappear the hat at all, I mean if that's what they told you to do then that's what they will be expecting... why not try to do something like take the cap/hat and say "well I would if but your hat is too valuable" and do Jim Pace's "hat trick" from his video Visu-Antics and produce a silver dollar or several, then give the hat back.

you can see Jim do the effect in the trailer on here http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=529

If you want to use a prop, then just use a tear apart change bag.

Otherwise, do the paper balls over the head routine with the hat, and try and get another friend behind you to catch the hat and walk away hiding it.

There is also the vanishing bowl of water method. By putting the hat onto a tray and covering it with a cloth. The ring in the cloth would act like the hat and the hat would be vanished in the same way you vanish the bowl of water (I can't reveal the method in this thread).

Then there is the sleight of hand method. Just like with a coin, you toss the hat into the air twice. On the third occasion, you swing your arm down like you did before but ditch the hat on the floor or use a Velcro strip to hook it to your back. Bring your hand back up as though the hat were still in it and throw the imaginary hat upwards. To the casual observer, it will look at though the hat has vanished as you threw it into the air. Because you have conditioned them into what to expect by throwing it up twice before the effect, they are expecting the same result on the third occasion. If you do the trick near a table, you can just drop the hat and the effect is almost impromptu.
