Topic: Gadabout Coins Revisited - Review - GET THESE

Question: What so many complaints in recent years about the volume of junk magic corroding the magic marketplace?

Answer: Because everyone is out buying the newest, hyper-advertised coin matrix or card-thru-window instead of investing in quality products, case in point the Ron Bauer Private Studies series, which I've read very very little about here on the Café, but which deserves more discussion that 99% of the new products discussed in this forum.

"Gadabout Coins Revisited" elevates that old "two-in-the-hand, one-in-the-pocket" effect we all learned and adore from Bobo and turns it into a genuinely entertaining piece of classy coin magic. To describe the presentation would be to divulge most of the reason to buy this booklet, so I'll only point out how Ron has wonderfully structured this effect so that it now has a logical and mystifying conclusion. The audience now actually knows when to applaud at the end. In additon you'll get lots of presentational tips regarding audience psychology as well as learning Milt Kort's excellent "In The Well" vanish. "Gababout Coins Revisited" is an excellent piece of close-up magic and will certainly be going into my repertoire. This was my first experience with the Ron Bauer Private Studies series and I'm looking forward to purchasing the rest of the series gradually. And at $10 an effect/booklet these are absolute steals.

Marko,

I couldn't agree more with your response. A thread was posted a couple of weeks ago and unfortanetly I had never heard of Ron Bauer before. I am fairly new into Magic (about a year after about a 20 hiatus). Within the post I only heard rave reviews from what appears to be the elite users on this board.

As a result, I ordered 5 programs from his series as follows:

Gadabout Coins Revisited
Cursed Ring
Bar Bill Stunts
Fair & Sloppy
Mechanical Deck

From the above, I love them all and everytime I read them I pick up something new. As a result, earlier this morning I ordered the remaining 8 programs which are currently released in his studies as well as "chick trick"

My take is the following on why I believe them to not be discussed:

It appears that most of the Magacians have a herd mentality and are only buying the most publicised tricks. Additionally, I believe a lot of them feel that for the $10 in which a program can be purchased for they get get more bang for their buck with a book or video. Or that some of the tricks are felt to be rehashes of what they currently have in Bobo's, etc... Could they be any further from the truth? Yes, in my opinion they are making a mistake!!!!

These programs are gems and are worth every penny and then some. They are professionally documented, illustrated, and printed. They not only do an excellant job of explaining the sleights involved, but they go into the physcology and why it works as well as how to do the presentation in detail. For the sleight mongers these would probably not be a good investment, but if you want to perform strong magic as per Ortiz's definition, then they are a must.

For me, the investment has paid off and will continue to going forward. I know that Ron's material will bring me to another level which is good. I have quite a Magic Library and I have been disappointed with some of the items that I have purchased but not with these.

I believe they will gain popularity going forward as they become more well known.

petersd/Dave, I have everything you do but Fair and Sloppy because I already do a similar trick. I also have another that Randy Wakeman suggested here that's GREAT called Feminine Side. Well worth the $

Ixnay,

I ordered the remainder of the set yesterday since I have heard good things about many of the programs and from what I have I like a lot.

You may want to consider getting Fair & Sloppy even though you have a similar routine. I like how he breaks things down as to pyscology and it has some nice refining touches. Although, since you already are fimilar with Ron's work you are aware of the quality.

Thanks for all the kind words about the material I'll pass it on to RB. I've been a student of Ron's for the past 4 years and help E-Gads with the Private Studies Series. RB and the staff at E-Gads puts a lot of effort into each of the tricks in the series.

Since I perform most of the items, plus a few possible future releases RB may put out in addition to the 24 in the series (Yes, there's LOTS more material all of the same quality or better!), I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone might have regarding the Series or RB.

Ask away!

P.S.

I asked RB what guys like Don Alan and him carried around with them in the sixties. You can see a picture of what he showed me at http://www.thinklikeaconjurer.com.

Hey Fellas,

I agree, Ron Bauer's Private Study Series are great. I now carry 13 of his Private Study Series because they are so valuable to performing magicians.

The Most Popular Series have been,

Xerox Money
Poker Dan
Butch, Ringo, & the Sheep

For those who have not looked at Xerox Money you should. It is absolutely great, and the money that comes with the effect makes it a great buy.

What are your favorites?

Which ones do you recommend?

I would love to hear your feedback.

Sudden Death Gypsy Curse
Feminine Side
Fair & Sloppy
Gadabout Coins Revisited
Mechanical Deck

These are the ones that I am working on outside of your list above that are great. I really like this series and would highly recommend.

Last night I purchased:

Feminine Side
Sudden Death Gypsy Curse (with cards)
Owed to Poker Dan
Left Handed Hank

I have been wanting to get these for quite awhile, but due to costs, haven't been able to.

If these books are as good as I'm expecting, they'll be worth the $10 a piece. Can't wait to receive them.

WOW! Are you sure? It's only been about 8 months since the last release. It usually takes about 2 years between releases. I'm just kidding, of course. The "Series" is great. RB is great. Life is great. Gee, all this and heaven too.

Weee, went ahead and added "Mechanical Deck" to my order also as I hear RB does a great job teaching Vernon's Double Lift in it.

I've been wanting to get these for a while now, but always felt that if I get just a couple of them I'll be too tempted to get them all!

After learning all the sleights and routines that I have these past few years, I think it's finally time to learn how to put it all together to produce entertaining effects. I beleive this series will help me out tremendously, even if I don't actually use all of the effects. I will invest in a few of them very soon!

Cardguy, all I can say is that you SHOULD get them. They teach you more than simply doing tricks. They teach you how a COMPLETE ROUTINE is constructed. More important, they point out to you step by step WHY what is being said is being said. Too many "Performers" are simply doing tricks and hoping for the best.

Doomo, well said. Don't look at it as $10 for a single trick because you are gettin soooooo much more for your money than that.

I realize I'm a few days late on this thread, but...do ya'll know about the video clips that are on the Private Studies site? The first 12 have from 1 to 4 videos that show you what "the secret move" should look like. Also, there are inserts from the books on the site that show the move as well. This is a great teaching aid. You get to see how to do the move from RB's angle. Here's a link to the "In The Well Vanish" in #1 Gadabout Coins Revisited:

Thanks for all your positive input on the series and there's more to come!!!

Don't forget to sign up on the mailing list, there will be goodies coming to those who have!
