Topic: Share a link to your own promotional video
Message: Posted by: Donald Dunphy (Dec 28, 2008 02:28PM)
There seems to be a lot of interest in show videos / promotional videos.

This topic somewhat belongs in the "You Oughta Be In Pictures" section.

But I think it makes more sense to keep it in the "Little Darlings" section, so we can keep focused on videos of ourselves -- kidshow performers who participate in the "Little Darlings" section of The Magic Café.

We get to know each other a bit by our posts and by PMs, but another effective way to build rapport is to share our own promotional videos or show videos. This way we can see each other perform, and get to know one another's performance styles, levels of progress, etc.

For this thread, I recommend that you post a link to your own video, rather than a link to someone else's video. Very often, when links are posted to another performer's video(s), it can be misinterpreted as an attack or critical behavior. Some people do not want to share a link here to their own video footage for whatever reason, and we should respect their wishes for privacy.

Here's a link to my video:

Donald Dunphy's Promotional Video, 2006

Care to share a link to your own video, so we can get to know you better?

- Donald

P.S. I recommend that if you want to comment on a video, or on the magic, that you can send some comments privately to the person. For example, I'm not necessarily asking for feedback on my video at this time. But if you really feel compelled to share some thoughts (compliments, or tips for growth), feel free to send me a PM. Thanks.

My intention is just to share my video so that you can get to know me a little better.

Great thread idea Donald!

Here's a link to a video I'm using on one of my websites.
It's not really a promo video - it's more a collection
showing the variety of stuff I do. I put it together
basically as a sampler to prospective customers.

From a marketing standpoint do you find that posting your promo video has helped you get more business? Do you think it is better to have it on youtube or directly on your website?

Ross, I have to tell you man, I am just such a fan! I remembered a while ago you posted something about doing your show sitting down now and I remembered thinking to myself, "Wow! that has to be tough!" Watching that video was truly inspirational, all the energy and the fun are right there even sitting down! It is also so obvious that you REALLY enjoy the kids. What fun! I laughed out loud at the angry cow bit! Seeing a good show like this just makes my day.

I know from customer calls that having a video right there on
my website has gotten me booked. Having a sample of what I do
for them to watch makes my guarantees of service all that much
more believable.

Right now, I wouldn't put up a new website promoting my services
without video... and preferably videos of what I do and reactions/
testimonials from happy customers.

All good stuff in all the videos above so far and hat's off to Donald for creating this clever topic,

Nicholas J. Johnson - your videos are excellent! especially the kids one. Yours is my favorite by far for many reasons.

Hope to see many more Magic Café Magicians Videos in this topic over the next few weeks/months and it just goes to show - Your 'magic show' is one thing and your 'marketing material' is another. Nicks video goes a long way in a short time to tell/show his story and in my eyes - it got the info across extremely well.

Enjoy,

I don't have a video... YET! However, I really like this video promo.. Looks classic... You showed a HUGE varity of potential characters you could be! You fit the part... I like when the person says: "Looks real I saw no slieght of hand." I think a lot of people see people do fancy cuts and movements in cards, coins etc.. and you just don't get the same feeling with people!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw933NoTy0o
There are a couple of issues I'm aware of, but would like to hear your feedback.
Enjoy! Potty :)

Here is the same clip built into my newly-designed website.
http://www.pottythepirate.com
I edited the video clip using Pinnacle Studio 12 - which supports 2 simultaneous video tracks, I don't think any more than that. You COULD use 3 or more video tracks, but would need to edit in each one separately, which would be VERY difficult. There are also several sound effects/title track overlays.
The website was built at: http://www.webeden.co.uk
All the tools are provided, so you need no software, just your images and prepared text (you can write it as you go the first time). The main work is to prepare a picture folder with all your photos. I store mine as J-Pegs, as these seem to be universally supported. If you want video links, you can use Pinnacle to post them on You Tube, and then embed them automatically in your website when you build the site. You simply type in the URL (displayed in the very top bar of your computer). Job done!
Having had bad experiences getting others to do my online work, I've found web building and video editing astonishingly easy. I think the key is to use a programme that doesn't offer too many options, yet still allows you to be creative. There is less to learn, yet you can still produce something completely unique, and there is no sign that you used a "template".
In fact, my site was built around one of the ready-made templates, but had I wanted to, I could have created my own.
Potty :)

What a great thread, Donald. Many thanks.

Some very nice clips here. So thanks to everyone that has (so far) shared.

Here is a clip from my Monsieur Magic show. The show itself is one full hour, and in addition to the magic, the show includes balloons and a brief vent bit, and I sell to parents of children ages 3-12... but interestingly enough, in this clip the birthday girl is age 1 and is attentive throughout.

http://www.monsieurmagic.com/Max_videos.html

Since this clip shows relatively young children in the audience (ages 1-5), I plan to upload clips of older children (ie. ages 6-12) enjoying the show as well.

I have a few performance video demos. The header one on my site is mostly for smaller private parties, but legitimizes that I offer larger events.
http://www.MagicNC.com

I believe it needs to be a lot shorter. Currently, people can keep watching for as long as they like. When watching other performers demos, I have always found a lot of value in audience reactions and short testimonials.

After your performances, you often know the clients that would be great for your demo. It is so easy these days to keep your camera phone ready for those excited and willing clients.

I know with the library systems, those clients often know each other (even several counties apart). There is nothing better than your new potential clients hearing how great you are from the people they know and trust.

Bob, I have to say I'm not overly impressed with the vid, it would be much better with a backdrop or curtain behind you, other than your living room, also, some REAL footage from shows instead of you doing just simply a few tricks infront of a camera. I'm sorry if you think this is a little harsh, but that that's my point of view!!
Cheers,

Sorry to hear about your lost videos, Bob. I don't think that means you have to put what you do have on your site, though. I think a living room performance will do more harm than good for potential bookers. Wait until you have some good live clips and then make something to put onlne.

This is what is wrong with 90% of all magic. Sorry to be blunt, but your video will do you no good, nor will it uplift the art of magic.

No, I do not have a promotional video, I do have one in the works. I am working with a professional video producer and editor. I do have a slight advantage over most folks, I am in the advertising business and have friends in low places.

Hey Idolmagic picture video is not my favorite but it was good and showcased you well. good that you do have some video onthe site when you search around it.

my comment is the red backdrop is not a good idea. red is really hard on the eyes and should never be used as a backdrop . I also noted that you weear a red jacket so another reason not to use a red backdrop. however that being said I applaud you for using a backdrop there are so many that don't and it really is a must.

when I lecture I really push magicians to use a backdrop. I show that one I use for my smaller shows and its easy up and easy down.

again good job for using one but I wodul really looking into getting a different color.

some of the best colors are -black (but I don't like plain black) Blue is a very good choice, purple. marble with puple and black or blue and black.

just a few suggerstions

have a good one

Thank you Frank. It's so hard to get live show video, but I enjoyed making this little thing so much I'm going to find a way to do more videos. I have an idea for a little home made kid show, like a local kid show from the 50's and 60's.

This isn't a promo video per se but I use it as a promo video and it's worked well.
It's an extremely short clip that Cal Magic put together from one of the evening shows where I performed.

I just tell my prospective clients that ask for a clip that I was the headliner that evening and "I'm the guy with the hat". Both clients that asked for a clip hired me so I know it doesn't hurt.

I don't "try" to get kids shows and my focus is corporate but I secretly love to do kids shows when I've got nothing else going on. In fact I've got one tomorrow and can't wait.

Nice looking videos Frank and Doc. I can tell the video equipment was of professional quality.. it really shows. I think, Frank, even though there's not a whole lot of your work in the clip, it's enough for most people to get the idea you're a pro. The venue says it, the costuming says it, the quality of the video says it, your stage presence comes through, even in the short clip. I think most of the time clients just want to see SOMETHING.. Before I had video, I had a mom tell me she hired another entertainer over me just because they had some video. I asked who she'd hired and got a website. I checked it and this 'performer' was awful, truly, and the video didn't do anything to make him seem better. But he had video and I didn't. I also suspect it had to do with price. This guy charges $50 for a party. You get what you pay for. If anybody's curious about this 'performer', pm me and I'll send you the link.

Oh and Michael.. great, old school, big, impressive magic! I love the 'big' Houdini-esque quality of what you're doing. I'm not sure how much kid show work you're getting from it, but I suspect you're getting plenty of work.
Message: Posted by: TheAmbitiousCard (May 24, 2010 11:09AM)
Thanks. I think you're exactly right, Mr. Pitts. They just want to see SOMETHING.

And probably something that:
1. doesn't give them an "oh yuck" feeling
2. looks like they're gonna get what they paid for

Here's a video I recently made to show at my booth at a showcase.

It's a bunch of short clips with music background, as it was meant to catch people's attention as they were walking by my booth.

No one really stood there and watched all four minutes. They would just glance at it as I was telling them about my show.

With that in mind....

Tim. That's a great promo, the audience reactions are priceless and you look like you belong on a stage, I'd have stuck around for 4 minutes.

Hansel, the dollar trick is fantastic. I've no idea how that works it looks like real magic. However, I think you should have a wee think and a re-edit. Look at Tim's video. Now I know you might not be able to get them same production values etc but you can change the focus. The culmination of magic tricks out of context is really only interesting to us folks on the Café. Tim's video focuses on the audience and volunteers, then on him, then on the magic. That's the way to do it.
Also, bored sound guy is a bit distracting.

Actually in the "You oughta be in pictures" here in the Café I explain the origin of the video.
At a public gig at a Shopping Mall a friend of mine brings his new video camera and taped the show. He put together a "Trailer" of my show as a gift for me! I shared it with my friends at the Café, but this is NOT my promo video!! Really this thread is intended to Promotional videos...So maybe I'm out of context but I think is a nice idea to share this with the Café people!

Here is mine. I paid a new video production company I found on Craigs list $20 to make it (except for the reviewsparts ). I figured, for $20 if it was lousy, no big deal. They did do a lousy job, but I was able to get 4 decent minutes, and I edited myself. I'll make a new one soon, and I'll get a good video guy this time, and have it edited better. But it does the trick for now.

Tim,
That is a really great routine. I feel that if you are doing a promo you should edit it so that it uses a lot of the funny parts but is shorter in nature. Most viewers will not stay for the whole 12+ minutes. You could get other routines in the promo to show different parts of your show.
Just my 2+ cents,
R

I imagine you were commenting on my new video, because it was 12 minutes. I also have a 5 minute montage video (mentioned that in the same post where I gave the link). The link to my other video is in the first post on this thread. I put both videos onto my website. If they like what they see in the montage, and want to watch a longer video with a full routine (not edited clips), then they will. So again, I offer them both. I am not offering a 12 minute, unedited show clip only.

If a person has multiple videos on their site, some customers will watch only one, and some will watch several videos.

Random thoughts ...
picture & sound quality is good - obviously you were wearing a microphone for the camera
since you didn't have a large audience I would suggest doing away with the group shot and using more closeups
not sure why you didn't show the kid floating in air. the shot you used just didn't work for me.
didn't like that the written message was separated as much as it is. you're making them wait for the message.
instead of the written message could you do a studio shot of you talking into the camera?

We get to know each other a bit by our posts and by PMs, but another effective way to build rapport is to share our own promotional videos or show videos. This way we can see each other perform, and get to know one another's performance styles, levels of progress, etc.

Not so much a promo vid since this is from way back in the 1990's when I was...ummm..younger...and performing a duo act with my friend. But I've recently put together a mash-up of our old videos (we taped everything) and this is our Die Box routine. Here ya go:

Hi folks, I'm a longtime lurker, infrequent poster, anyhoo here are a couple of promo vids that I've put together. I've aimed to give just an impression of my personality and show. My general thinking on this is that a video of my show, unless very well produced, wouldn't do it justice...you'd have to be there. So, until I get D.A. Pennebaker out of retirement here are my efforts. Thank you for watching (that's if you bother of course ;) ). http://youtu.be/JsGqd0FjdfM http://youtu.be/OCWPfkYnyNA

I've got a promo video made by a film school graduate that came out great. But this is one I put together myself and it shows. The footage is "Finding Bigfoot" quality and the editing is pure amateur. That being said, I'm pretty happy with it. The kids in the video are undoubtedly having a great deal of fun, and that's what I'm selling. As I get better footage and learn more about the editing process I hope expect to put together better stuff.

Here's a vid with "The Laughing Pirate" as a backing track. It's my take on "The Laughing Policeman":

For some reason, the vid is squished - the original YT clip isn't.....

I thought I would put up my original promo for my national tour I am currently on.
partly because we are making a new one and it will be fun at least for me to see the difference of the two.

so much has changed (for the better) since being on tour and working out many little corrections or additions.
but hopefully you will enjoy this one.

Here is some footage from 2 shows I did at a library a few weeks ago. I'm having it edited down into a proper demo, but for now, this is it:

Hi folks - After 10 years away from public performance and more than 25 years away from performing for children, I am again taking bookings. I must be mad! Anyway, things have moved on somewhat since I last used a change bag(!), and there is this thing called video now, and YouTube. It's like a whole new world. So what I have here for you is my first ever showreel.

It was filmed at my first show last weekend. Quality could be better, I know. Editing was a dining table, DIY venture by yours truly, and it was filmed by my brother using a home video camera. No professionals were used (or harmed) in the making of this video! I didn't have a sound system or mic available, so sound quality could be better. Also I need the kids' reactions on screen, but I figured it is better to get something out there now and aim to improve on it (and get parents' permissions) for Showreel 2 later. So here it is. The Magic Peter Showreel. Comments, of course, welcome. Thanks in advance.

Here's one of mine. I've gotten lots of business off of it. I was fortunate enough to have a cable company cover one of my shows. It's a little different spin than the rest of the videos on this, but it works for me. Here's the result.

I loved watching this vid, because it shows that even with a totally deadpan presentation, the techniques used can still get screams and laughter from the kids!

It is not to complcated and it was made for kids to be able to perform...

Dave—I like it! It's obviously not professionally made but I think it's amongst the best of the homemade promo videos, because it shows the children engaged and the footage of your performance is condensed to small, powerful moments. The music is a little loud relative to the rest of the sound but this should get you work. Good job!
