Topic: New Puppets by Axtell
Message: Posted by: axtell (Oct 9, 2009 10:33AM)
As some of you know from Facebook, we have several new puppets coming out very soon. Many will have AxTrax for non-vents, and some can be made up into Hands-Free puppets as well.

The World's Oldest Man (could be Oldest Magician, oldest Mailman, Oldest Singer, etc.)
Hang-On Monsters (a series of wacky monsters that wrap around your body)
Meerkat (Kid's love Meerkats because of the new Discovery show Meerkat Manor)
Weasel (Pop goes the Weasel... put it in a box, crank a handle, never pops up right)
Duck Amuck (A very funny Duck)
P-P-P Platypus ( Strange mammal that lays eggs and feels so left out in life)
New birds (3 or 4 new big designs)
Big Bad Wolf (quite the opposite really)
Funny Monkey, etc...

Here is a sneak peek at 2 of them... let me know your comments!

COOOOOOL!!!!

The old man is awesome. The monster is reminiscent of what your turtle might look like after one too many at the late night lobby jams ! I can't wait to see what you come with for the "new birds" and the duck.

You have one very fertile imagination, my friend....

Steve Axtell made a Fred Chicken for me using a turkey head. It looks great!!! I plan to use it for big venues like auditoriums and theaters. Robin will ship it on Monday...I'll post some pictures soon :)

Thanks Ax

Steve,

The nose of the World's Oldest Man covers most of his mouth in the head-on shot. While cheating him to the side would be easy, it may make his mouth movements harder to see from a distance. Just my thought...

Great characters, can't wait to see the others.
Tom
Message: Posted by: axtell (Oct 9, 2009 01:08PM)
Ooops...you mentioned "the nose"! Don't let him hear you say that or he'll start reading you the riot act! Actually, come to think of it, he can't hear too well so you're probably okay! Whew! Close one!

As the "World's Oldest Magician" I'm working on a special hand holding a break-away wand that can be controlled from the end of an elbow rod! Every time he's about to do a trick it breaks.

The old man seems to be perfect as an Asian character, with those chinky eyes.
Interesting!
As usual, great work!

The more I look at that old man's head, the more it takes me to a place like "Dark Crystal" or something similarly mystical. He would make an awesome aged wizard.....

Mark
Message: Posted by: axtell (Oct 10, 2009 01:56PM)
Yes, The hair and beards we will be using with him is really incredible... it's made by a company that specializes in custom special effects furs and hairs. He will be amazing as a wizard.

This guy is so old he could be great grandfather to my other old man...the "old Storyteller".

Just curious,

Tod... thanks so much. Actually yes. I was contacted about "Where the Wild Things Are" just last night...my daughter wants to go see it with me. : )

I'm sure you know of my past involvement with Madagascar, VeggieTales, etc. I've also had puppets in movies with Tom Selleck, Michael J. Fox, etc. I was recently hoping to get the Beaver gig with Mel Gibson, but didn't.

There's some of my custom stuff here you can see ...

With your monster's arm slapping and then return, am I correct in thinking the hang-on paws are magnetic, Ax?
Message: Posted by: axtell (Nov 6, 2009 09:52PM)
Yes Tod...there are rare earth magnets in the hands. You can have all kinds of props in your pockets that are metal or have metal inside them and he can pull them out of your pocket with his hand.

There are wires in the legs and it will also be optional (for walk arounds) to have magnets in the feet, so you can put these cool little fabric bags with metal washers sewn in .. (inside your clothes) to make the feet stay where you want them.

Crazy character.. rod arm...magnetic hands....wired legs.....dangling uvula and optional spiked collar... WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT??!

That headstick is a neat idea!

That wouldn't even be too bad for the duck. Most duck puppets have thick necks (the vents arm) but I also think the thin one could work.

It would give him a skinnier neck, but the size of his head and bill on Chuck the Duck is too big for a headstick control, We'll probably have photos next week.

Any updates on some of your new puppets that you will release soon?

I used my new Chuck the Duck today. I only bought him because an agent want me to have something for easter. But I think Steve's got another winner on his hand The kids just loved him. He's a great chacacter and he improvised some cool lines.
Well done Steve.

I've been trying to say P-P-P-Platypus without moving my lips. It's a challenge. I'm sure interested in that wolf. I have a definite character in mind I'd like to use that puppet for. I'm currently using a Folkmanis coyote for the character. Any estimate on when the wolf might be available?

Any updates on the Platypus and Mr. Wolf???

Can't wait to see them. Finally persuaded wife to not VETO the purchase of a puppet! She is abstaining from the vote since I just sold my Axtell Toucan!

Sad parting with him, but really wanting either the Platypus or Mr. Wolf!

Steve, what is the voice for the platypus? Is it compatible with any of your "wide open" routines?
