Topic: Performing in a nudist resort
Message: Posted by: dooblehorn (Aug 22, 2011 11:32AM)
Anyone ever perform in a nudist resort? Looks like I will be and apparently am expected to be
dressed like everyone else there (birthday suit only).
(Guess I won't be producing any birds and probably no fire effects, LOL!)
If you have had experience with this, was just wondering if you had any tips or suggestions?
This will definitely be a new performing experience for me!

I'd wear a pointed hat but am not willing to say where I would wear it.

She definitely has nothing to hide. Who is the performer? Great fun, that!

Who said you can't get a solid 5 minutes out of a thumb tip routine?

Here's an interesting interview with Ursula Martinez further to her "Hanky Panky" routine going viral: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQAGXFKfwQ8 .

Being a portrait artist, a pretty lady once asked me if would paint her in the nude.

I replied, certainly but can I wear my socks so I have somewhere to put my brushes?

Well, after all, I chickened out...hopefully they were able to find some other nude (nudist?) magician!

That would have been quite the experience. You would have been playing with your deck anyway.

Its actually a good test for ones self to see what you can come up with, no pun intended!!

Since the first day of the post I wondered why this thread was started in the "The clothes we wear"

I knew a magician in New Orleans, Gottlieb Kogel, who owned a nudist colony and there is a newspaper article about his demise that mentions he performed on occasion. He was also a magic dealer and had quite a collection of apparatus including, according to him, all of the Great Hermann show. I visited his house where his mother was residing and had a chance to see the boxes, trunks and illusions. An amazing collection. Here is the link

It would be great place for the Buck twins to do their next DVD.

The could call it: "The Bucks Naked" :)

Performance heaven for someone who relies on misdirection a lot. "What are you looking at?"

I performed at Paradise Lakes in Tampa, Florida. It's the world's largest nudist community.

Have you heard how to cure stagefright? They say to imagine the audience naked.

I've never had stagefright, this audience WAS naked. I've NEVER been so scared in my LIFE!!!

The gimmickless zombie is always a hit at the nudist colony.

A few things to keep in mind:

Nobody there is judging your body. Nudity is the norm there.

Most nudists no longer associate nudity with sex.

Don't worry about getting physically excited. Chances are you won't.

Can't say I've ever had that particular experience. My father, however (not a magician but a musician), once performed a gig at a nudist resort. The band was clothed, and this was expected as the norm at this particular resort.

In that situation, I probably would not perform nude. Not because I have an overactive sense of modesty, but it just doesn't feel right to me (and if I'm feeling off my game, I don't trust myself to do the best magic I can do). To me, though I don't wear a "costume" I feel that a choice in attire is part of what makes a magician's character. Deprived of that, I lose a piece of my character (not to mention my pockets!). What I would do instead would be to wear the most outrageously formal attire I can find (I might even be inclined to go over the top and wear a powdered wig) and make a burlesque of my choice not to adhere to their customs. If they don't agree to those terms, I'd have to make a difficult decision, but would likely have to decline the job.

I have mentioned this in another thread, recently --I can't remember which one!

Doc TARBELL was a nudist. Along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, in Indiana, there are/were a number of nudist resorts. Doc would perform there. The magicians in Chicago would ask him, "Doc! Where do you pin your pull?"
