Noone cares about modern day slavery. What, 10 million people? 20 million? Whatever. We still have 150 year old slavery to worry about.

For some reason, nobody wants to talk about the several-thousand-year history of slavery. Discourse about 19th century American seems to drown everything else out.

It does. Slavery still exists on a pretty large scale but it doesn't seem to be a very big cause for most people. It's easy to think it started and ended in America, but of course that's not true.
