I got my 6th Scent yesterday, and with typical obsessively focused energy, I've spent hours with this kit.

Let me preface this by saying that I don't like reviews that are way over the top for no reason. It's either a good piece of kit or it's not. And the other issue is whether or not the price is justified. Most things over the $400 mark need to be held to a higher standard. So here's some honest opinion from someone who made the purchase with a plan toward using it a LOT.

You get six special lip balm tubes with very distinct scents. You get a specialized something that alerts you to which one tube has been picked up.

There is a DVD. It has a handmade feel to it, but the information is there.

You also get a very well made case.

Maybe best of all three specially prepared markers that can accept the you-know-what's from the chap stick tubes. What's the big deal with this? If you are willing to do the Scent routine with three chap sticks you have another devastating routine ready to go. We are talking about something very different using what is essentially the same tech.

Let's consider that tech for a second. With all things electronic, reliability is key. I don't know about the long term, but I can say with absolute certainty that the s*gnals have been instant and reliable. Not a single mis-step. Perfect performance. Great reliable prop.

What's not so good? That's the question most don't want to deal with, I guess. The truthful answer is "not much."

Comparisons with ProM**tic are inevitable here. Thus far I like the PM rec**ver better. It's more streamlined, smoother to hold and, to my mind, less likely to take damage when it travels from pocket to hand. I don't love the DVD and the routines, while serviceable, I think will be eclipsed as performers begin to really explore the possibilities offered through this remarkable device.

In short, 6th Scent is a triumph, bristling with creativity and brain tickling possibility. It may just be the very best bang for the dollar available for the worker as well as serious hobbyist.

I would give it a rating of nine and a half billets out of ten.

Now you know.

I really like the TI-stuff, but the lip balm tubes seems a little bit strange to me.
It's great to use everday objects, as they look real innocent and it is also okay to use (modern) magic props (especially on stage), but lip balm tubes are neither fish nor fowl. They are everyday objects, but will anybody have six of them in real life? So IMHO they are not innocent anymore.

But that should not be a real problem, because of the opportunity to change the objects. :)

The same applies for 6 drinking cups and no one carries 6 felt pens as a rule. You are obviously performing when you bring these things out. If you want to appear as spontaneous, then bring out one lip balm, one pen, a lighter ....

That's what I mean. If you want to have a Impromptu look, you have to change the objects in six different objects or you have to have a good reason for having the same object Six times (e.g. would be easy with coins, but of course that will not work here).

To perform I wouldn't take lip balm, but as mentioned earlier: That should not a problem, because I can fit everything to my needs.

IF you were planning an experiment using scent, the notion of lip balm tubes makes perfect sense to me.

Think about it: if you were performing a demonstration where you would attempt to know what your volunteer was smelling, what more perfect vehicle could there be than the lip balm tubes? They are small and pack a powerful scent.

What would be ridiculous would be the performer who says "Gee...what should we do now? Oh hey! I happen to have six different scented lip balm tubes here. I wonder what we could do with them?" as opposed to "I'd like to try an experiment. I have brought with me six tubes..."

What is "impromptu?" about a stage show anyway?

David
Message: Posted by: Boo de Hoop (Jan 29, 2012 10:33AM)
Of course a stage Show is never impromptu. I was talking about other situations.

But the smelling is a good point! That tralla make sence.

I was thinking you may be able to combine this with The Moment. You could predict the exact moment in time the spectator smells one of the lip balms. So not only do you accurately predict which lip balm they chose, you also predict the exact moment they receive the scent.

I break in most of the stuff I wind up doing on-stage in a close-up or parlor setting. So when I had the opportunity to perform a 40 minute set for some oil execs this afternoon, I decided to put 6th Scent into the program. I'd been working with it feverishly and felt like it was ready for a test drive. I put the new stuff (in this case 6S) in the middle because if it bombs, I'm covered.

So there was 6th Scent, sandwiched in between the Mother and Multi Dimensional.

I won't go into the routine I used -- but here's what happened. My volunteer was VP in charge of marketing. He was a big burly "don't give me any crap" kind of guy. But he was also a crowd favorite.

I explain that scientists have long known about the link between the memory of a scent and powerful memories. So I explain what I want him to do and I turn my back etc. The guy chooses the mint chapstick. So I go through the whole thing where I breathe in when he does. I start talking about Christmas, etc. And I identify mint. Great reception. Guys were applauding like crazy -- because my volunteer is absolutely NOT the kind of guy you'd ever even consider making into a stooge.

So I decide to incorporate something else.

"Your memory is very powerful, isn't it?" I ask.

He tells me it is...and so I tell him that I'm not sure (because I'm REALLY NOT...just putting the tips of my toes into the cold reading pool) but I have a feeling there is a strong female attached to his memory.

There's another pause and he tells me I'm right.

"An older woman?" I ask.

He pauses LONGER this time and tells me I'm right again.

Now I pause here because, those of you have studied cold reading etc even a little know what's happening. I've basically taken no chances at all but the room is eating this up. There's this absolutely reverent silence.

"A woman related to you?" I ask.

"My aunt Helen," he says. He's actually sounding a little misty here -- so I drop it.

But after the show, they all wanted to ask me about how I knew these things about the guy's aunt. And I got a hefty tip, which will, in all likelyhood be headed back to TI with a purchase of RG2.

And all because of one memory triggered by a scent.

6S has had a wonderful inaugural run and I expect it to be in my act for a very long time. It's tactile and original and the more I think about it, the more I am certain that the information shared with me in knowing which scent the spectator has chosen will lead to some pretty hot cold readings. I am really looking forward to exploring this.

....hmmm....

Gee.

Actually, now that I think about it...6S is really a pretty awful prop. Yeah. That's it. It's...ummm...awful...and no one should buy it...because of its terrible...ummm...awfulocity.

Ahem.

So...don't get it.

Okay?

David, it is very gratifying seeing your story. It looks like all the hard work we put into 6th Scent is yielding the best kind of fruit.

I know how eagerly you were awaiting the arrival of thisd, David, and it sounds like it was everything you were hoping for. Did it come with the re****er or was that extra?
Message: Posted by: David Thiel (Jan 30, 2012 10:30AM)
Nope. It's included. Frankly it's actually more than I was hoping for.

I think you'd like this a lot too, Joe. You could do a routine around that whole "something is rotten in Denmark" thing.

I saw someone has theirs up for sale here on the Café. (hint hint)

Already sold :/ I saw it earlier and thought of you!

Thanks for the thoughts David.

I originally planed on buying this during the pre-order but I missed out as the money was not there yet. (it was 6 scent or the wife) I must ask though, is the re***ver as quiet as PM's? I'm guessing it is but this is something I find to be important.

Thinking of buying this in the next few days and the thoughts you have expressed where very helpful.

Hi Darren,

The receiver is extremely quiet and as far as I can remember no louder that PM's although I would have to pull out my PM receiver to check.

Hope that helps,

MJ

There is a screw you can use to adjust the ferocity of the sound. It's easily accessible, and you can tinker with it until you're happy.

I think we've corresponded enough that you know I would simply never endorse something unless I was genuinely happy with it. I am genuinely, sincerely delighted with this unit. If you PM me, I'll tell you one additional thing that I didn't put into the above review, Darren.

David's posting is spot on. 6th Scent (which I can't help but think of as T6) is T3 with more transmitters and streamlined. My favorite routine is still the PK Taste one originally published with T3. Now I can have that AND gaff my markers (my other favorite). The Annemmann technique for obtaining the participant's favorite candy is akin to what David did (brilliantly I might add) for a kicker. Having the markers in play and using them sparingly throughout is awesome (you know when a spec is using a marker anytime during the show. I have not tried detecting movement which you could do with T3, like having a spec move forward. Would be curious to hear from Chris if this would work).

I made the pre order by the skin of my teeth so I am just now playing with T6. T3 was great. I expect T6 to be spectacular.

One other note - the ability to charge with USB is so much easier than replacing batteries. I really appreciate that touch.

I received mine within two days! I have not had a chance to road test it yet as I just got it but will admit that this is a thing of beauty. I asked earlier about the quitness and Matthew doesn't lie, this thing is indeed quiet! I like how not only do you get the chap stick tubes but the markers as well. There is also an idea by Christopher in the DVD in the extras section that I think a lot here will love and use.

Matt/Christopher, can you please contact me asap as it is somewhat important, thanks.

Does anyone know if Christopher is around?
I'm thinking he may be travelling to the UK for Blackpool.

It's just that I've sent him a few emails over the last couple of days and haven't heard back.
Which is very unlike him.

Thank you

Mine is arrived today!
Everything absolutely top noch the quality of the props is amazing you can tell that there is a LOT of work on it.
I already have in mind few routines that will kills! This is a MUST have and the price is really low for what you get.
I don't have any commercial agreement with Chris so what I am saying is 100% true.
Also, you don't need to use all six tra#######r togetheer, you can really have two or three routines using the same re####r.
Amazing, this will go straight in my act!

Hi David,

Hope you have managed to contact Christopher. He is still here in good old BC and will leave for Blackpool on Tuesday the 14th (next week). Did you try his email at info@taylorimagineering.com?

Luca, so glad you got yours my friend. Thank you for your kind words and I am very happy to hear that you are excited about your purchase. A CRAZY amount of work has gone into each set and I have personally been involved in the manufacturing process so you have my sweat on there too ;) I guess that could be considered gross but then again you don't get charged extra for the sweat ;) lol

Enjoy!

Got mine! Love it! (I also loved the idea on the DVD for the pic cubes!) Picked mine up at Michael's in the USA--for only $3.99 each!
Haven't used it yet, but looking forward to it!

Thanks Matthew & Christopher! Great product!

The photo cube idea is a good one, that Christopher is a pretty smart guy ;)

Thank you for your purchase and keep us up to date as it grows with you.

All the best,

I pinged all the owners of 6th scents on here. 100% great reviews!! Thanks! But called the guys to order and they have a problem getting parts. About 2 weeks out from now..

Sad...

Just want to say their after sales service is superb
Message: Posted by: NeilS (Jul 19, 2012 03:52AM)
I just want to second what Rowland (and others) have said. I have recently bought 6th Scent and, several weeks later, am still reeling at the possibilities this offers. Pleasingly I actually performed the 6th Scent routine in my last show and it was a wow with the predominantly female audience.

However when I did need to ask Christopher something he responded straightaway and was really helpful. It is wonderful to have service like that, so a big thank you.

My 6th Scent gets a lot of work, both as intended and in ways that some might find troubling ;) I must also echo Neil's gratitude regarding Christopher's quick response to a customer service interaction that I had. My only issue is that people tend to try to stand up the lip balm tubes but that was easily remedied by passing them out in a hat or bowl. I use these all the time!
Message: Posted by: David Thiel (Jul 23, 2012 11:01AM)
I leave the lip balm tubes in the black case they came in with the labels facing out. I really like that case, since it already has a scientific look to it. I see no reason to move the tubes out of it. (I have, of course, removed the TI sticker from the outside of the case.)

When the volunteer chooses one, I know for sure which one it is because they need to remove it from the case.

Really like this effect.

Thanks for the kind words! 6th Scent will actually be undergoing a change in the near future. The reason 6ht Scent is not available for sale at this time is I am having a LOT of difficulty putting the lip balm tube and pen sets together because of the sheer time and effort required. As a result, I have decided to rerelease the device with just the electronics, as T•6. The price will be reduced. I will keep you all posted. Cheers.
