What's the deal with the Penguin pop-ups in the lower right corner of the screen?

I posted this here because it only happens in "Latest and Greatest" and maybe one or two other sections.

Is everyone having this problem or is it just me? This isn't intentional, is it?

Robert

I think it's intentional - and irritating.
Message: Posted by: BatsMagic (Nov 16, 2012 09:33AM)
Yes, it must be intentional, and yes, it is irritating.

I like and use Penguin. But still.....

This is what we must put up with for a free resource.
Message: Posted by: Robert P. (Nov 16, 2012 09:45AM)
I understand why it is done and while I'm not a fan it is what it is.

But one thing I would like to change is to be able to delete the "Live Help" at the bottom right. When browsing from a mobile source it won't scroll with the browser window so it will actually cover up text in someone's post. It would be nice to turn that off in our preferences or the very least be able to close it from the thread.

Ouch.
Message: Posted by: Zombie Magic (Nov 16, 2012 09:47AM)
It looks like the live help pop up ( which I've used quite a bit to get questions answered I had about products ) has the LIVE lectures added to it as reminders of what's coming up. I just click the X button and it closes. I'm here quite a bit, so I guess I just got used to it.
Message: Posted by: Silver Glove Magic (Nov 16, 2012 10:06AM)
I agree with Zombie, just click the X and it will kinda go away. Perhaps it is annoying to some, but I'm sure it helps bring in a lot more business to Penguin which is good marketing, and smart thinking. Maybe if it "disappeared" after a few seconds could help ease the tension? Just a thought.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys! Whether you love it or hate it, it helps to hear it :)

We're trying to help support Steve and the Café with advertising while raising awareness for live magic, but the last thing we want to do is irritate regulars.
Message: Posted by: Silver Glove Magic (Nov 16, 2012 10:12AM)
Not bothersome for me at all. I would politely suggest though, the graphic of the guy doesn't quite fit the "Penguin" profile. Perhaps a cute little magic penguin graph wouldn't bother folks as much. Because who can hate on a little penguin with a top hat and magic wand right? :)

I definitely appreciate what Penguin and other advertisers do to support this site.

When I mentioned deleting the 'live help', I really meant to be able to close the graphic from the thread (don't know if I came off correctly in my previous post). Right now with my kindle fire I'm finding myself having to rotate the display (which moves the graphic to a different spot) and scroll down to the post I was reading, and after reading that section then rotate back to my preferred view and scroll back down again. But if it would always stay at the bottom right it wouldn't be a problem. It's not the biggest deal but since the topic was started I figured I'd throw my suggestion out there.

If the ability to close the graphic is implemented please make the 'X' big enough so my fat finger can press it. :)

That's really insightful, Robert. Thank you. We'll try experimenting with it within the next 24 hours, I'd love to hear from you if you notice it improves your experience.
Message: Posted by: Jamie Ferguson (Nov 16, 2012 10:50AM)
I like the way Penguin listens and responds to feedback unlike other dealers who get really defensive when criticised (or worse ask for threads to be locked - you know who I'm talking about!)
Message: Posted by: BatsMagic (Nov 16, 2012 12:01PM)
That's one of the MANY reasons why Penguin is so excellent! Thanks, Acar!
Message: Posted by: MR Effecto (Nov 16, 2012 12:38PM)
I like it. Do most my shopping from Penguin. I got a great deal today. Love the select 5.
Message: Posted by: Robert M (Nov 16, 2012 02:20PM)
Okay, thanks. I thought maybe I had some sort of bug or something in my computer.

I shop at Penguin, too. Their prices are low, they have a great selection, and they ship really fast. Also, where else can you actually see your order being packed for shipment? That's a really cool feature.

But, this pop-up seems to be overkill. I could live with a pop-up that shows who the next Penguin lecturer is going to be, but you should be able to click on the "X" and make it disappear completely. I think in the end, this is going to turn out to be more of an annoyance than anything else.

Robert
Message: Posted by: Zombie Magic (Nov 16, 2012 02:22PM)
Robert, the pop up vanished.
Message: Posted by: Robert M (Nov 16, 2012 02:38PM)
Not for me.

I still have a "Live Product Help: ONLINE" pop-up. And, when I click it, it says:

"See Doug Conn LIVE

If I had to see a pop up, I'd prefer to see The Cool Box from Penguin, since the products are updated about every 24 hours or so.

Are you talking about just the yellow box? That pop-up has been on the site for over a year.

Some time back everyone received a PM from Steve, telling about this new feature. If you don't read your PM's it may still be their.

This was presented as a "Help" and "Expert" contact. They will answer all your questions by their experts in magic. I guess they have a large library to consult, as this is suppose to be not just for questions on a product, but expert answers to all magic questions.

I have not read a reference of anyone using it as yet, meaning no posts that Penguin gave them the answer they were looking for in their quest for additional knowledge.

This is mainly in the new tricks sections like this and The Good, Bad, and the Garbage sections of the Café. It seems to have expanded to this section more recently.

I am sure over time all the forum topics will have pop-up advertising, can't get away from constant advertising. Remember, you have money and they want it in their pocket and not yours.

So if you have magic questions you need answered, don't bother posting on the Café, just ask Penguin Magic's Live Product Help.

It really adds to my experience. But I'm a big fan of intrusive advertising.

It's like a blue fungus creeping in to the corners of my screen. As if there was someone behind the green monster, pulling it's strings. (and raising awareness of live magic)

Spooky!

Oh, okay. Now it makes sense. Don't tell me people actually read Steve Brook's private messages? Just kidding. I'm sure I read it and then forgot about it.

I honestly thought there was something wrong with my computer, and I wanted to check and see if I was the only one with these Penguin pop-ups on the lower right corner of my Magic Café screen.

I see why they're in "Latest and Greatest" and "The Good, Bad, and the Garbage" areas. Maybe I'll try using it sometime. I've used it on the Penguin site before to ask a question about a product.

Thanks for clearing this up, Bill. I still think it's kind of annoying and you should be able to click on the "X" and get rid of it, but I can certainly live with it.

Robert the little live help bar was announced by Steve Brooks last October:

http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=437335&forum=38&0

From Steve:

As most of you know, I consider the Magic Café a work in progress. Always adding some new things while often removing some of the old.

Working with my buddy Acar Altinsel and the gang over at Penguin Magic (who are now official supporters of the Café ), during the next twelve months we will be engaging in a little experiment of sorts.

Penguin Magic will now be assisting Café members in helping them to better understand many of the new offerings which become available to the magic community on almost a daily basis.

Let me explain.

Begining today, any Café member who browses thru the topics of following forums: Latest & Greatest, Tricks & Effects, Books, Pamphlets & Lecture Notes, Dvd, Video tape, Audio tape & Compact discs, Ebooks, PDF's or Downloads, Stage Illusions or Magical Accessories will now notice a little message in the lower right-hand corner of their screen.

The message says; "LIVE PRODUCT HELP: 8-4PM M-F"

Basically, anytime during normal business hours (Monday thru Friday) you need only CLICK the little box and you will be chatting LIVE with a spokesperson from Penguin Magic!

So, say you are reading a discussion on the latest card trick but have a few questions in the back of your mind which have yet to be answered on the Café - give that box a CLICK and chances are you'll quickly have answers to those questions by a very knowledgeable Penguin Magic associate.

How cool is that?

Well hold-on to your seats folks because we have plenty more new features coming to the Café over the next few months and I want to thank all of you for your continued support of my little website which has helped to make features like this one possible.
Message: Posted by: Don Dasher (Nov 16, 2012 03:57PM)
Mine grows larger every time I leave an unfavorable comment about Penguin Magic.

At this point 75% of my screen is covered.

Also, when I try to close it, it darts around the screen like it's trying to escape.

I tried to get help through the box but right as I was finishing typing my question the girl from the Exorcist popped up screaming and scared the beejezus out of me.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm all for the popups if they help support the Café. And -- honestly -- the Penguin lectures are fantastic. I'm not affiliated with Penguin, but I've bought a bunch of magic from them and I love the lectures.

You CAN get rid of it if you click on the "X".

It's just that the "X" is not visible unless you go searching for it. Look for it in the upper right corner area of the pop-up near Doug Conn's head and you should find it.

Yes but every time you acccess another forum it COMES BACK :fear:
Message: Posted by: lemonjug (Nov 16, 2012 06:49PM)
When I click the x it disappears but it comes back when I leave the page. It's really annoying! The little yellow band is fine but the picture over it is a nuisance. That said, I'm a big fan of Penguin Magic.
Message: Posted by: Zombie Magic (Nov 16, 2012 06:53PM)
It hasn't popped back up for hours on my screen. Is everyone else getting it?
Message: Posted by: The Baldini (Nov 16, 2012 07:38PM)
It's very annoying and it's now growing in size , even more annoying. And most items are not sold by penquin, they have no clue about most products.
Message: Posted by: Zombie Magic (Nov 16, 2012 07:51PM)
It just popped up on my screen. I like Doug Conn, so it doesn't bother me. If it was my image that popped up, I'd be annoyed.

Dave, anytime I used the live help option they were able to answer my questions on products they carry. Did you ever use it?
Message: Posted by: John C (Nov 16, 2012 09:09PM)
It totally messes with my tablet. Go away.
Message: Posted by: mysticalsales (Nov 16, 2012 09:40PM)
I dislike it..
Message: Posted by: Grasshop34 (Nov 16, 2012 10:10PM)
It doesn't bother me. Penguin is supporting the Café. They are great to deal with and I can always trust them to get orders out fast and cheap. Thanks Penguin!
Message: Posted by: Acar (Nov 16, 2012 10:14PM)
Thanks everyone for so much helpful feedback!

As a test, I've made the image less than half the size. This may change, but I wanted to see if that made a difference. It covers much less discussion content, especially if you're on a smaller screen.

Thanks again!

Does yours have an X to delete it? Mine does not. I HATE it.

NO other advertising site I know of still using floating reminders that do NOT allow you to remove them.
It actual makes readers DISlike the company. I am a total Penguin customer and fan. I purchase stuff from you guys all the time. But if you don't give me a way to remove that stupid advertisement, I will annoy you back by purchasing my stuff from one of the other advertisers that doesn't annoy me. It is as simple as that.

Why would I purchase product from an advertiser that annoys me on EVERY page I read??? Would you?
Let me read your ad once and then remove it, I'm not an idiot.
Message: Posted by: Robert P. (Nov 17, 2012 07:30AM)
Joe, if you hover over the Doug Conn image an X appears in the top right corner that allows you to close it. It might not work that way for all browsers though, I don't know. With my mobile browser it doesn't.
Message: Posted by: j100taylor (Nov 17, 2012 08:14AM)
Right but then it appears again the next page you go to...I want to go to the south pole and start clubbing penguins...
Message: Posted by: Zombie Magic (Nov 17, 2012 01:34PM)
Looks like they worked on the image. The actual box is there, but is transparent so it blocks less Café content. The image of Doug Conn of him displaying the ace of spades is his "Tic Tac Turnover" which is a cool card revelation he teaches on his Built To Last DVD.
Message: Posted by: Acar (Nov 17, 2012 01:50PM)
Thanks so much everyone.

We want to continue a) supporting the Café with advertising and b) raising awareness for the outstanding magicians coming to lecture while c) maintaining the high quality Café browsing experience.

Here's our current plan in response to your (great) feedback:

1. Make the pop-up barely visible Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
2. Make it slightly more visible Thursday Friday Saturday in preparation for the live event
3. Sunday-only we'll spread our wings a little more to announce that evening's show.
4. Work with the software team to make the "close pop-up" semi-permanent. This makes sense!

If all of these work out, I think you'll be pleased, and it'll really minimize the trouble several of you have expressed (particularly the tablet guys)

Thanks for all your support and patience, guys.
Message: Posted by: Harrismatic (Nov 17, 2012 04:34PM)
I personally not only don't get annoyed from the add but I love the designs.

Besides, the forum obviously needs resources and advertisements are in my opinion welcome by the time I am in a constant search for everything new and upcoming.
Message: Posted by: j100taylor (Nov 17, 2012 05:04PM)
Thanks Acar! Way to go. BTW I have subscribe to all the lectures and think they are one of the best deals in magic.
Message: Posted by: sirbrad (Nov 17, 2012 07:44PM)
I find it annoying on here and on the site when ordering. Would not be so bad if you could x it out completely, but that only shirnks it down some. I never use it so it is useless to me. I prefer email support.
Message: Posted by: The Baldini (Nov 17, 2012 07:50PM)
I have tried contacting them for info and they were not helpful, and I still find the pop up annoying, I'm not bashing Penquin, innfact I really like them, they are great to do business with,
