Topic: I guess I didn't look too magical here...

I was performing at a large amphitheatre (1100 people) at a zoo this fall and began the "Cardiographic" routine. For those not familiar, a spectator selects a card and the magician attempts to draw a picture of the card on a sketchpad. The magician draws the wrong card. For a moment, the audience genuinely believes that the magician has messed up (depending on the magi's acting ability!). The magician then draws more lines on the picture, converting the wrong drawn card into an entire deck, at which point the correct card is seen to visibly rise from the deck. The paper sheet is then torn off and given to the spectator as a souvenir. Very strong illusion!

Well, this particular show, the zoo's amphitheatre was packed. When that happens, usually I'll look up and see folks who have wandered by at some point in the show and are standing by the side entrances. This time, I noticed a group of about 10 folks who were watching the cardiographic. Now, in my routine, I really try to make it look like I've gotten the trick wrong, and I try my best to look like I'm at a loss for what to do next. It was at this moment that these folks decided to move on, never seeing the surprise ending and successful conclusion. They simply walked away shaking their heads.

So, this was a run of shows comprised of some of my best material. Over that month, I believe that everyone there had a good time. But for those folks and their interesting timing, I am certain they walked away wondering why I was even there!
