For any of you who use, or want to use, the subconscious as part of the world of your mentalism show... and why wouldn't you?... I highly recommend Bob Burns' The Swan.

You can find out more about it here:

There's certainly an "Hypnosis with Trance" vibe to it, but it's not hypnosis :) and there's certainly no trance :) I don't want this to get lost in "Sleepy" this is work that has great value to mystery performers of all stripes.

I use "imagination tests" in my performance and The Swan is definitely making an appearance.

You don't have to play any role... this is fun... but powerful fun.

I had no idea what I was in for and I couldn't have been more pleased.

Thanks Bob!

This might put some people off... its 30 minutes long.

Well, that's me out then.

I only buy instant downloads that are no longer than seven minutes.

Anything longer than that cannot possibly be worthwhile.

Will this help me pick up chicks?

Yes...baby swans. But they're more correctly called sygnets, not chicks.

This is not the clip you are looking for - move along!

Hi guys,
As some of you will know I CAN BE a bit of a plonker :)
ie: some of the guys who bought this (THE SWAN) I truly believed were hypnotists/clinical hypnotherapists, and was surprised later to discover they were mentalists (some of whom I had been chatting to 'in here' for many years).
I just discovered literally 5 mins ago that the fella' called Dave Moses is in fact 'dmoses' who's posts I have been happily reading in here... forever. LOL!
Thankyou very much for posting this Dave. As you will know I used to post daily on 'Penny For Your Thoughts' and suddenly backed off. To be honest, until I received an email just a few moment s ago I don't remember being aware of 'Mentally Speaking' (what a great idea :) )
If I can say very quickly that although I work as a pro mentalist I have also been hypnotising since 1977 so I've dropped a few you might say. I run a fairly successful practice here in Montrose (the home of James Esdaile)where I mentor visiting therapists and also do workshops around Europe revealing my particular take.
THE SWAN came about by accident whilst working on myself (hey, it's what I do :) ) and since then I've taught it to a couple hundred therapists and stage hypnotists.
But I now use it in my mentalism work, both one on one and in group work.
If I can very quickly thank Andy Fisher for posting the SWAN CLIP (thankyou Andy).
That particular clip was taken during a coffee break and I honestly had no idea that someone was even filming it till we were well into the protocol. But I actually like it as it reveals that not ALL specs/clients are 'naturals' and sometimes we have to work a wee bit?
It was taken during a workshop I was doing in London and the gentleman involved (Philippe) and I have since become very good friends. The guy filming it eventually popped over from Athens to spend a couple days being mentored by me (it's a funny old world huh?)where he saw me perform THE SWAN, again & again, in its full glory!
I also want to thank IAIN DUNFORD (cool thinker)for contacting me recently with some truly wonderful ideas of performing THE SWAN that I simply never thought about and might want to take further (with him).
I guess I should honestly end by saying that although THE SWAN is 'a keeper' in any mentalist act I do believe it is also a revelation in how to TRULY contact our very own subconscious. You don't really need to hypnotise. You can simply summon THE SWAN. :)
Yours aye,
bobser (Bob Burns)

I don't know why Eric, but that killed me. Very good.

Please Atlas-- don't encourage him! :)

ps. performed The Swan for the first time today. The reaction was terrific-- from both the subject, and the people who were watching it unfold.
Anything that can make your mentalism visual is a gift. And this "mental game" has a terrific theatrically to it.

For those who have it, I added one last phase to Bob's "routine" which is to end with a positive affirmation as the Swan lays down its head ( "...only as quickly as Sarah's subconscious is ready to... etc. etc.)

I'm never going to stop performing this.

I've just arrived in Southampton (over a 550 mile drive and clicked into The Café... 'I'm buggered! LOL!!).
Thanks Amira, and Dave that's a lovely line, thankyou. Sometimes we don't NEED to lead... we can simply 'pace', and THAT for me is a lovely 'pacing line'to close with. I'll steal it of course :)

Can't have Moses and Samuels being the only ones using this in my area; just ordered it.

I cant decide if I am happy for Bob, or disappointed that so many people are going to be doing this..... and I wonder if they will now start to think I am using trickery when I do "the swan" with clients!

It is actually a lovely piece either for groups or one on one......

I think Brian Brushwood is working on a version for his show Scam School. I can't wait!
Message: Posted by: bobser (Aug 20, 2013 02:38PM)
Brian Brushwood is a 'big fat tattie heid!!!!!'
If he is not careful THE SWAN will surely destroy him.
Anyway thankyou Luca and Iain xxx

I can only add that after two views in a row I find this one simply excellent.
Thanks and congrats, Bob.

I have finally had a chance to watch this, and it is elegant and wonderful. I'm absolutely staggered. Bob has terrific teaching style, an incredible voice and manner, and he makes it seem so easy! And he looks like Robert de Niro, which is cool.

I'm very thankful to have this in my toolkit. Thanks so much, Bob!!!

I performed this earlier this week and had a reaction I never had before-- it's something that Bob deals with in the video but I had never experienced it personally before.

I began the first phase and the person that I was doing this with freaked out when things began to happen.
She turned her head away and couldn't watch-- but the Swan kept on swimming along.

I appreciate that you put that particular participant on the DVD, Bob, it allowed me to handle the moment as a fun one instead of a potentially stressful one.

I love this more and more

Wow,thanks guys. It's lovely to pop in now and again and get such nice feedback.
As many of you will know I actually constructed The Swan as a bridge to contact the subconscious in my work as a clinical hypnotist. I didn't give it a moment's thought at that time to take it to the mentalism community. Indeed, as you will know I haven't really pushed it as yet.
But yes, I now use it regularly in my work both in stage and in close-up for one-on one's and with groups while delivering a talk.
For those of you who have The Swan and/or use it do feel free to contact me in order to be included in The Swan Forum (facebook). where you'll be able to read some fascinating stories from guys who use it in the therapy room.
Initially it was thought of as an ideo-motor response, such as Chevrul's Pendulum, but now people aren't so sure WHAT it actually IS (and that includes some of the top hypnotists in the world LOL!)
Anyway, for the mentalist, you can see where you can take this. For emperical evidence that something IS truly happening in both the mind AND the body of the recipient it's a nice arrow to have in your quiver.
BUT, be prepared for some surprises?
