Topic: Presentation props (boxes/wraps) & ideas to use with System 6 Haunted Doll
Message: Posted by: Merlinsmagic (Nov 9, 2013 06:58PM)
I know Devonte asked us to post in "Latest & Greatest",however that thread has become way past what L&G is for (at least as I understand the rules),so I thought I'd start a new thread on System 6's Haunt Doll that gets things on track here were it seems should be......Presentation Ideas & props like the box & wrap I made that seems to have created an interest (& for those new without 50 posts yet,as we are not discussing secrets but different performance ideas & props to share & use with they're Haunted Doll).

I would like to start with 2 boxes I found the other day bouncing around to the different thrift stores, I stripped & redid them. One rough & dyed dark & the other the wife suggested I try some color, what'cha think ?:

1st 4 pics of dark brown box is Redwood,burned & stained with scratches,dents & ruff designs engraved, second red box (3 pics) I used some red dye I had left over to be different, but tempted to sand it off & go more like the 1st dark brown box, but leaving the design on top - (should play thru all 7-next arrow to right of pic);

Looks nice,Merlinsmagic! :)

Maybe to 'B' movie...but,one could use one of those little coffin boxes, picked up for 99 cents,at craft stores!
For the VooDoo theme!

Thanx G, hey those coffin boxes could work if your doing a routine around that !

I'm still looking for "blanks" as I don't feel like making them (yet,LoL), so as I get some done as I find them, I'll post them generally here & then in the Sale section if anyone become interested in a box & wrap. Each will be unique & I'm not looking to put my cat thru college, couple bucks for the box & shipping, more or less to help those out that would like a box/wrap but can't find one near them.....

Sent you a PM, but will say I like the first one a lot more than the second one. The first one (darker with scratches on the lid) looks appropriate to me, the second one looks more like it is just a puzzle box.
Message: Posted by: Wizard of Oz (Nov 9, 2013 07:51PM)
I agree with barts185. The first one is very dark...especially with the gnarly markings.
Message: Posted by: Merlinsmagic (Nov 9, 2013 08:08PM)
Thank you both, the 1st one has been pre spoken for, but from what you 2 say, I'm sanding off the second & re staining it to a "Dark" puzzle box of mysteries.....looks like I will be creating more of the 1st then !

The second I was trying out a different look, but obviously wrong direction !

Yep,I like the dark one best as well, just my preference.

Nice boxes! I'm thinking of adding some perfume to the inside of my box. Demeter Library of Fragrances has some nice fragrances, like "Dirt", "Funeral Home", "Beeswax", "Mushroom" and "Earthworm". Imagine opening an old box, and a smell of dirt or earthworms starting to spread in the room. Then you pick up the burlap and unwrap the doll.
Message: Posted by: daffydoug (Nov 10, 2013 03:54AM)
You can actually PURCHASE those fragrances ? That is amazing! Please tell me more about that!
Message: Posted by: djefvulen (Nov 10, 2013 04:35AM)
Yes they're available online: http://www.demeterfragrance.com
I have some of them, not all smells like the name suggests, but some are really good. I really like Dirt, it smells like wet soil/mud :).
Message: Posted by: armymagic (Nov 10, 2013 04:50AM)
They got a lobster scent, mixed with their salt air scent and I'm back on the east coast! Thanks for sharing the link for the scent library, my wife will now get the wrong idea completely when I tell her I ordered a new fragrance or two. "Hey honey, like my new perfume, it's called funeral home." Thanks again for the link!
Message: Posted by: daffydoug (Nov 10, 2013 06:02AM)
I checked out the link. I am amazed that they are actually able to replicate such a wide variety of scents!

I have another idea for the Haunted Doll performance. I'd like to involve more senses, we have the visual and the smell. I've been thinking of the hearing. I have used my iPhone in the pocket to time whispering voices when doing the haunted key, and I was thinking of doing the same with the doll, but then I started to think about music boxes. especially those you have to manually turn around. It would involve the spectators. When they start to wind the music box, music is starting to play as the doll rises in your hand. Someone also mentioned using the Pure Smoke-effect. Think of combining all those effects/props, I think people would be very creeped out :).

You start with a story about an old box you found at a flea market. The seller also gave you a music box, and said it "comes with the box". Then a few nights later you woke up, hearing a tune playing. When you got up to check the sound out it stopped, but something smelled really strange. After a while you remembered the box and the music box you bought at the flea market. You started to turn the music box, and there it was, the same music that had woke you up. You also heard a strange noise from inside the box. You opened it and found a piece of burlap that wasn't there when you bought it. You unwrapped the burlap and found a weird looking doll, with a weird smell that wasn't there before. Your wife/girlfriend/whatever has woken and get into the room and wondering what you're doing. You're holding the doll in your hand examining it and ask her if she know what it is. No she says? What's that? She picks up the music box and start to turn it. As the music start to play the doll moves in your hand and starting to rise. It freaks you out and you put it back in the box. The next day you go to the flea market to return it as it was way too creepy. When you get there, there's no flea market to be found. Instead there's a bakery. You go inside and ask about it, but no, the bakery has been there since 1856, and no one have ever heard of a flea market in the neighbourhood.

So what you need is:
The Haunted Doll
A story
A weird fragrance
Some burlap
An old looking box
A music box (preferably also old looking)
Maybe the Pure Smoke-effect

I found pretty nice and cheap music boxes on Ebay, like this one: http://ebay.eu/1dVUmVW there's also a video with sound, I think it would work. Maybe scratch/burn the box a bit :).

That's what I would call genuine theatre.

The performance would probably have to bs done when people were not rushed or in a hurry (as with "Heirloom", for example) the actual telling of the story would take some time. So I'd guess this would not be for street performances.

What venues would you plan to work it in?
Message: Posted by: djefvulen (Nov 10, 2013 08:21AM)
I think I will start with family, friends and at work. I have a job where I meet lots of different people, and where I can take some time to do these kind of things without anyone thinking I'm not doing my job :).
Message: Posted by: Merlinsmagic (Nov 10, 2013 09:56AM)
Love your storyline ideas djefvulen, especially the extra's like a magic smoke device & music box.I have a Magic Smoke V2 & the music box would be great if it played an eerie/creepy song,or gut one & play my own tune as I have tweaked/creepy music box audio & some whispering track (I create/mix SFX audio for Haunts). I also like the idea of the scents, we have used them in the Haunted House/Halloween industry for several years to add extra wham to making scene areas smell like the scene looks, great idea djefvulen to use them on the inside of box to add extra creep factor to HD !

It is amazing that some of the scents are spot on,some not so much.....I even had started mixing & creating my own scents at one time.....LoL
Here's one of the guys supply places we use that started it in the Haunt Industry - http://shop.dreamreapers.com

Looks like 1oz is pretty much the same at both places for $20. But I would like to give you some FYI on these scents, they come as an oil/mineral based & water based product. If anyone wants to use scents in they're fogger for Halloween *must make sure you use water based scents. For the Haunted Doll you could use either,oil/mineral based fragrance will last longer then the water based, but you will have to periodically re scent it with either.

They really are effective & I can imagine opening a box with a HD in it & smell burnt, charred or a rotting smell ! The fresh dirt or graveyard scents,.....eh was not impressed, the fire / burnt scents most of them are pretty close :) Funeral home type scents have a dead air/musty smell from the ones I've smelled, but kind of lite scent.

This is what I like about the Haunted Doll, you can use it for simple walk around / street performance & then in a parlor type setting for a separate story telling / theatre piece on it's own or with other effects for a intertwined storyline of effects,.....so versatile ! I have a script/use with my witches theme :)

Just came up with another thought :). Would it work to modify the doll so you can hang it on a leather necklace and easily remove it? I guess it would be nice for street magic, some people would probably ask what you're wearing around your neck. Sometimes I like when people take initiative and ask me, instead of "forcing" a trick on them :).
Message: Posted by: Merlinsmagic (Nov 10, 2013 11:22AM)
I had already considered that thought by using either Hemp twine or a thin "old" (aged) leather lacing I have from a leather store & it would easily be attached so you could remove from doll, perform & reattach to hang back on your neck :)

Create a tied circle of whatever you want to use (knot at back of your neck 12 o'clock), place line behind doll body/arms, pull bottom of line 6 o'clock up in front of doll/in front of arms over doll's head & behind head (at rear neck of doll). This should keep doll locked on line & be able to use a s a necklace & easily remove doll from it & leave line on neck, then replace doll on line as before !
No need to modify Doll this way -

The doll's arms act as the hang spot & back of doll's neck the lock point (if any of that makes sense as I typed......)

Considered also tying a small burlap bag/sack with doll inside also, making people wonder "what's in the little old bag around your neck".........

I was playing with my HD last nite & my new Alchemist's Bane cards for a performance idea with HD & AB (uses one or a few people) -
Full storyline not created yet, just the basic idea here;

Bring out pouch with AB cards & HD box, place on table card pouch closer to spectator, if doll in box, place in center more towards you or pull out doll later-
1 - While your back it turned, have person(s) chose 8 of the benign cards & 1 poison card, all of they're FREE choice.
2 - Then have them lay out card face down in a Tic-Tac-Toe type square with poisoned card anywhere in the square (have them space them a bit). Turn around & present HD - remove from box/off your neck, etc.
3 - Lay HD on your hand,(evening performance) perhaps light a candle & ask the powers that be help divine & guide,etc,......
4 - Slowly move you hand over each card, as you approach the poison card - doll rises a bit, move past poison card doll lowers,.....
5 - After passing over cards & dolls reaction to 1, remove doll off your hand & lay it down on poison card,(lay your hands palm side up on top table left/right of cards), spectator takes doll off card & turns over card to reveal poison card, turn over rest of cards & show the benign cards !

**Bonus - if spectator also has the Nux Vomica card in the benign selections, you can have the doll react to that & (idea from Mind Guerrilla) point out that Nux Vomica may have been harmless for the purpose of alchemical experimentation, we now know it as the base for deadly strychnine. Therefore, the spec's miss is now converted to a hit !

I think I may make a box with scratch marks on the INSIDE of the lid.
The lid would need to lock, to "keep him in"

Great idea !

Several of the creepy boxes I use have key locks or hasps for padlocks. Obviously, props that are magical, or perhaps even magically dangerous, must be kept in locked boxes to keep them out of the wrong hands.

Iove the idea about hanging it around your neck! You could get people unwittingly asking you to perform before they even realize that they are asking you to do an effect!

Awhile back I designed and built my own doll house, the happenings include rappings from inside ( the knocks are actually coming from inside the house ), the doll's hand visibly sticks out of one of the curtained windows and a toy phone rings. I have used this for Halloween shows with great response.

Below is a link of a brief demonstration, during actual performances I add a spirit slate and a few more goodies..it gets pretty intense.

Did I mention the above effects are under your complete control at all times via wireless remote.

I think it would be cool using the doll with IT and the Fearson-hookup. Then snapping off the thread near the doll (or using wax), doing the Haunted Doll-routine and finally letting a spectator take the doll from your hand. What do you think? To me it would look like REAL magic :).

I'm Loving all the "Presentation ideas" being discussed. Great to see fellow magicians be pro active about bettering the trick they've just invested in. Many of us fall prey of just opening a trick and performing it exactly as we see, never developing the patter and presentation further. We've, System 6, have passed on some of the great work you've all have been doing with the Doll to Rogue the creator, And Rogue say's "You guys all Make him proud"...Truth be told you make us ALL proud. As I mentioned to DaffyDoug, It is Great to see so many magicians Add there own twist on things. MerlinMagic and Bart have done GREAT Work as well. That being said I love Daffydoug's idea of hanging it on his neck. I would love to see the possibilities of having it as a KeyChain. We, System 6, are now working to see if that is something we would consider doing a limited release on. A Compact Small Voodoo Doll that hangs on your Keychain, For those who might forget to wear it, they wont forget their keys. :)
Message: Posted by: Dr. Van Van Mojo (Nov 14, 2013 06:44AM)
Merlinsmagic mentioned using the doll with his Alchemist's Bane cards, awesome idea. I've used it in a similar fashion with a Living and Dead test.

Another thing I've done is taken a hair from a spectator and wrapped it around the doll. I then have them raise and lower their hand as the doll rises and falls with their actions. I had one hilarious lady in her 60's that asked me if I wanted a pubic hair, I almost died laughing. Then after seeing the doll stand up during the effect she said "Imagine how it would've stood up if you had used the pubic hair." I wonder how a novelty phallic shaped version of this with a viagra wand to wave over it would go over...

I have another idea for the doll that has to do with Haitian Vodou rituals, the soul and essence of a man, and some made up mumbo jumbo. I have to purchase a few things and get to work on it. I'm not sure it's going to work but if it does I think it'll be awesome.

I posted this on the thread in latest and greatest but I'll post it here too. I wish they would combine all these haunted doll threads into one.

Not a great idea IMO.
#1 It's already about as small as it needs to be, any smaller and it's going to start being difficult for spectators to see and appreciate unless their face is inches from your hand. I would actually like to see a larger version.
#2 While wearing the doll as a necklace would look pretty cool and interesting and be a conversation starter, I think having it on a keychain would reduce it to looking like a cheesy souvenir or toy instead of something that could be real and have strange and unusual powers or properties.
Just my .02, your mileage may vary.
Message: Posted by: Devontemagic (Nov 14, 2013 07:49AM)
LOL Great Response Dr. Von magic. I guess you're right the Key chain, would dilute the impact the doll can have vs. wearing still keeps its importance. People still wear crosses, star of david and / or heirloom.
Message: Posted by: Merlinsmagic (Nov 14, 2013 09:56AM)
I will have to agree with Dr Van, I see the necklass as a convo starter & looks great, key chain would cheapen it to me......& your HD deserves to be presented in the best ways - IMO

& any smaller I think would be too small. Plus I wouldn't want someone to ask what cereal I got the little toy stick-thing from.......

Going to a local Harvest festival with the wife this weekend, time to put my HD on a "old leather" necklass, l have a feeling the holiday spirits there will be extra playful ! :) (Maybe I can get a vid or 2 performing my HD)

Hey Guys just saw this review in the Penguin review. It's literally the first BAD review we've gotten. I know some people had to fiddle with the doll a bit, but would love to know how the doll "completely didn't' work" Sounds Fake? Person said the doll did not work at all in there hand and that the DVD was No Good ;/
Message: Posted by: djefvulen (Nov 14, 2013 10:42AM)
For me it was a little hard the first times. My performance is still not perfect, but it does work and it gets better all the time. Some won't need practice, some would need a couple of days. I can't imagine how it should not work. Maybe the doll was broken somehow? Or the reviewer didn't put enough time into watching the dvd/practicing.
Message: Posted by: Merlinsmagic (Nov 14, 2013 11:15AM)
Ouch......after I watched dvd, I was up & running performing for friends, my bank teller, family, & couple other people in the 1st day & went over great with no probs.
I never really viewed it as a left or right hand item (i use my right for this feels best for me).

As for the dvd "no good" what is that supposed to mean....didnt work/play, person didn't think it was a full lenght movie that they expected it should have been.....?? Sounds more like this person got it & just couldn't get it thru lack of practice or thought it should magically jump around on its own.......some people get the hang of it a tad sooner than others.

Maybe I can post a review on Penguin even ghough I got it thru you.....

Haha you guys are definitely a boost of confidence while still keeping us honesty. I guess so, we take these things personally as reviews are like a magicians applaud, we know that we won't be able to please everybody but I guess I would have loved to know more, and would have of course made sure he got a better doll, had that been the case.

MerlinsMagic: I think that would be great if you left a review. Many people who don't buy direct through penguin leave reviews as, it's a (sometime) notable place for informations.

Godzilla: haha I wish, I'm still a believer that it was a fake, doesn't even seem he took time to correct some of the grammar. Can't please everyone I guess. PS: your joke in the signature in your profile is hilariously, I've said it several times to friends already LOL.

Ok on to more positive ideas: Has anyone had a chance to play with Bonus "No Hands" idea. I'll be honest and say that I've see n some people do it and completely blow me away, and other try and fail.....any tryers?
Message: Posted by: Merlinsmagic (Nov 14, 2013 10:19PM)
Hey Devonte, I know it would be great to have 100% happy, HD has definitely been a hit so far & it would have been nice to get better info from that person (if that posting review was real) so you could perhaps see if it's something you could help/correct,etc, or at the very least know the meat of that unhappy buyer's neg review.......

Never the less, I feel that your HD will gets it positive dues you & it deserve as time, sales & the good work gets out :)

On a separate note as to the hands off handling, I have not tried, having too much fun in hand ! (Lets not go there on that last comment....LoL)

Funny thing, I used the HD today with the faking of I.T. (as Daff suggested), then proving there was non, then went into using my Spider Pen pro for a few other similar rise & floating effects. After proving no I.T. with the doll & continued on with other I.T. REALLY blew minds as I removed that thought of I.T. from using the HD 1st !! LoL

This just keeps getting better each day !!!!

If one decides to use cloth to protect the HD, wouldn't it be a sinister little idea to put gl**py in the cloth? :winker:
Message: Posted by: Wizard of Oz (Nov 16, 2013 11:19PM)
Sweet idea The_Alexander. Hmmm, would it be stronger to perform the Gl**py effect before or after the in-hand demonstration. I'm thinking before, but I could be wrong.
Message: Posted by: The_Alexander (Nov 17, 2013 02:45AM)
Mr.Wizard of Oz: yes indeed, but I have nagging feeling that this would need a third effect to go with.

hmmm. Maybe mindreading trough voodoo. First try under cloth doesn't produce strong enough connection but from open, in your hand, you got strong dive in spectators mind trough doll and reveal his/hers the innermost sins about playing cards
Message: Posted by: Brynmore13 (Nov 17, 2013 05:06AM)
Loving your thinking The_Alexander. Very sinister indeed.

I also like the idea of preparing a spell and thus distracted, having the doll rise while your not looking at it and are completely oblivious.
Message: Posted by: Devontemagic (Nov 17, 2013 08:49AM)
Not my idea, but what if you combine

- Rising cloth,
- Haunted Doll
- *Ashes in the hand

The story line can be based on Voodoo / Spirits. It is coming alive through the cloth ad the Doll, but before it goes away, it leaves a trail....(On your spectators hand). Just like any great Ghost story, it leaves you thinking, did the spirit / ghost actually leave or did it decide to linger around and is now inside of your spectator LOL.Too Much?

I suppose this can go on and on...there are so many possibilities. But let's say you had a Devil's Handkerchief (is that what it's called, with the secret po***t?) but also with a Gl***y gimmick. So, begin with the doll wrapped in the cloth, hint at its power. It remains under the handkerchief but the handkerchief moves...then, you remove the doll and it rises in your palm. As a closer, you drop the doll into the handkerchief and it vanishes...it was never real at all...

This is a work in progress, but I figured I'd show the steps I'm taking working on a container to hold my HD...(even though I broke mine...don't ask, it was completely my fault, and I will be ordering another one by weeks end).

Today I visited the local Hobby Lobby - awesome store! The place is FILLED with items that can be used as props for magic. The first thing I found was a small "naked" wooden box that was the perfect size to hold the HD. The only "problem" is that it didn't have any clasp to close the box (and surprisingly the lady that was helping didn't know where to find one in the store to add one on - which I'd be willing to bet that they have somewhere, as they have almost anything you can imagine craft related...). Anyway, while I was thinking of ways to "dirty it up" (dirt, shoe polish, etc.) I came across this awesome little box that already looked old, is the perfect size, had a magnet clasp, and was already magic related (see 1st pic). It looks really cool & old, and it only cost 3.49 (originally it was 6.99 but they were having a 50% off sale). It's the perfect size to fit a deck of cards, so I'm guessing magicians might want to use it as is for reasons other then what I did (as it looks pretty cool as-is & they had other cards besides the King too, but I decided to ruin it for the sake of the HD...)

I also found a set of burlap sacks at Hobby Lobby in a pack of 3 different sizes for 4.99, and one of them was a nice fit for the HD (I imagine I can use the two extra to use for something else). I'm thinking I could probably even gotten them cheaper if I looked for a coupon like the sales lady suggested...

Anyway, I took a lighter & Sharpie marker to the burlap bag, and a Sharpie to the box (the lighter made the material of the box smell terrible when I tried burning it, so I went the marker only route on it - the lighter worked perfectly on the bags though). I think things ended up pretty cool! That said, I plan to get the box "dirty" tomorrow, and rub some dirt into it...maybe pour some coffee on it, and try a few other things to stain it some different colors...I know it can look a lot better.

All said, for less then 10 bucks though I think I came up with something pretty cool. I'll let you know what people think once I perform the HD in front of spectators. ;)

This performance involves WA & the Haunted Doll which plays nicely together, if you have WA then you understand the following (if not,get it-awesome book test effect !), obtain each of the 7 "charm" items (ivory being difficult, would have to swap out for something close like reg bone....)
getting a supply of each for give away as a momentum for the spectator to keep & provide them they're "charm".

I use an aged cloth (soon to have markings on it), open it up & place the 7 items of the WA's "charms" in a large circle or however you like. Bring out HD in box / off necklace,etc.... have spectator hold in they're palm & transfer they're energy to HD. You take HD, put in your palm & to make your revelations, the HD rises above they're "selected charm" as you pass your hand over each (you can play that out a bit with it rising & falling a bit until doll "finds" the right "charm". Finish WA performance revelation / readings & then give the "charm" item to them to keep !

** You could get a yard of velvet (I got a deal on some purple) at a fabric store (color your option/preference) & hemp twine & cut small swatches of it to wrap the item/"charm" in it to protect "charms" power when you give it to them.....

I am working on combining a routine with WA & Alchemist Bane cards.(& linked as thru Ipswich for additional length of performance if desired) & maybe include the HD as an added option......

As I am awaiting for my two dolls to turn up in the post. The suggestion of a music box intrigued me, so I done a search and found that disneyland make a haunted music box, might be a great prop.
