Topic: The Visionary by Stephen Young - a review
Message: Posted by: jaizon (Mar 1, 2015 10:03AM)
The Visionary is a new effect by Stephen Young and although I wasn't at Blackpool, reports are that it was received quite well.

What's in the box? A beautifully crafted set of cards with photos on one side and some words on the backs. You also get a
really well produced instructional video on which Stephen covers every aspect of the Visionary. The content and format of
the DVD are examples which other creators would do well to follow. It is both clear and thorough and sometimes humorous (by intention).

The Visionary is a multi-phase routine in which you can see what the spec is seeing in real time. It can can be done as a one, two or three parter.
None of the parts are difficult to learn or perform and
if you follow Stephen's instructions you can be doing this very soon after receiving the package. The thinking behind the gimmicked cards
is quite brilliant and very well thought out. The transition from phase one to phase two to phase three is effortless.

I have always found it quite difficult to review an effect without giving anything away about the methods involved and the Visionary is no different. However,
Stephen has started a closed group on Facebook where owners of the effect can discuss ideas and methods freely. And Stephen
is available to talk to you about anything regarding Visionary. I can attest to the value of that bit first hand.

I really like this effect and it goes into my act next Saturday night. Initial reactions from specs has generally been a puzzled look on their
faces, followed by a big grin followed by "How did you do that?".

If you like mentalism where you can create a closeness with your participants (what could be closer than being in their minds?) -I think you will really enjoy Visionary.

You can contact Stephen Young directly on Facebook.

This one just in from FaceBook;

"First up, let me stress that I don't know Steve other than having purchased several items from him in the past and having the occasional discussion by email and on Facebook.
Also I purchased my copy of Visionary, I wasn't given a review copy.
I also work as a mentalist every week, doing restaurant work, private parties and the occasional corporate gig and trade show.

Visionary as has been mentioned elsewhere is an extremely versatile and very professionally produced effect.
I've been waiting expectantly for this since October 2013 when I first read of an exchange on the Café between Steve and Jim Kleefeld of Cinema Verite fame.
I think fans of CV will love the Visionary.
The beauty of this effect is it's versatility, Steve has constructed a very effective and mystifying main routine but you are in no way restricted to just using this option.
You can do all three phases or just one or two of them, total freedom on your part.

Last night at a regular restaurant gig I twice performed the full three phase routine and presentation as described by Steve to see how it would play and it killed, lots of OTT reactions at both tables which was great for generating interest from other customers.
Later in the evening I did an entirely different presentation for a table of regular customers and it fried them really fried them.

The cards themselves do not take up any real space, they will easily fit in a shirt or jacket pocket, they look great and attracted no suspicion as they can be handed out so freely.
The cards are so well designed that you could ( I'm not suggesting you should ) perform the third phase time and time again for the same people with very little, or no fear of being caught out.

There are so many possibilities with these cards, an outstanding product, a great buy that I will be using regularly."

Thanks for that Ewen.

I fully echo these comments. The Visionary is just so versatile and superbly produced.

Is there a video performance, rather than a trailer?
Message: Posted by: Stephen Young (Mar 3, 2015 04:48PM)
Re-shooting of a Video of a performance is planned for tomorrow evening.
We did have some footage and although the sound was OK there was a faulty MiniDV tape that meant the video was unuseable.

Seems visual enough to be used in various languages, but there was a mention of words on the cards so I want to check if this is language dependent or suitable for languages other than English.

Thank you,

The words on the cards are in English.
But that hasn't stopped people in Belgium, Germany, Spain etc using by introducing them as flash cards used in the teaching of English.

Hi, Steve.

Greetings after a long time from Athens!

As an already proud owner of PICT-ionage (both sets regarding their size), Pho-Psy-Pro
and ESPy-onage I and II, would you be so kind to inform me whether there is any
set still avalilable after Blackpool, for immediate shipping or not?

I'd be glad to hear that there is even one in stock, so I could proceed with
my purchase while the stock lasts.

I also sent you a more detailed PM.

It will be a 'decider' for me.

Order placed.
You never can go wrong with Steve's brilliant thinking.
Message: Posted by: Andrew J. K. (Mar 5, 2015 08:55AM)
NOTE to Steve.

When you post my order, besides my shipping address it would be wise for both of us to write
your residential address as well on the package in the rare case something goes wrong with the

In this case if the package get "lost" and doesn't make it for any reason at my doorsteps,
it will be sent by the Greek postal authorities back to your address safe and sound.

A huge thanks again for your patience.

This is good...very very good.
Great method, quality materials, great customer service and fair value... a recipe not found very often these days.
Well done Stephen!

Steve, just got home from my first little "Austria"-Tour this year and found your package :) ! Just give me a few days to get into it, it looks fantastic, but on the other hand my desk is full of less interesting, but to be done things

Got mine yesterday and have had a day to play with it now. The cards are very nicely printed and the DvD clearly explains everything. There are several. ways of presenting the visionary and I am sure some folks will come up with some fantastic ideas. I tried it out on my wife who is very critical and she didn't have a clue ! I am looking forward to seeing what idea come to me in the next few days. I liked Missing in Action but I think this is Steve's best creation to date !
I am sure that folks are going to take this in directions we never imagined 10/10 .

In the DVD Steve said he does not like 'one trick ponies' but effects which offer multiple possibilities, and on this front The Visionary certainly delivers. With both pictures and words to play with, it offers so much scope.

I really have enjoyed using these cards and got tremendous reactions. Also being different from the norm, the cards are more interesting for the spectators too.

Message: Posted by: Stephen Young (Mar 17, 2015 04:20PM)
At 8:30 minutes in is a quick run through of one of the phases of The Visionary

I'm sure you'll be trying to see if you can get any hints as to method............
So I should point out, that the fact some of the cards were upside down was purely due to the random mixing,
and not part of the method.

Strong, commercial, close-up mentalism is really hard to find. So I'm absolutely delighted with The Visionary.

The props are beautifully produced, the DVD is thorough, interesting and amusing and the routine ingenious! Each phase is more impossible than the last and it's super easy. Already a contender for trick of the year!

Very highly recommended.

You should check out Missing in action too, a great routine. For me on a par with a certain routine about a mental asylum

Looks like another winner. :rotf:
Message: Posted by: MikeMgc (May 13, 2015 04:17AM)
I agree with Iain, this is super strong mentalism, that can be played close up but I can see working equally well for Parlour or even stage and very commercial.

For me more importantly the overal plot allows for presentations that fully justify the use of the Props always a challenge in mentalism. Each phase builds and Phase 2 and 3, which can be performed stand alonwe look utterly impossible, I would say they are undetectable, particularily phase 3.

Phase 1 which is super easy - if performed and presented well will also fool people.

This really is an excellent product in every respect. I first saw it at Blackpool and couldn't work it out. I saw it again a month later after having puzzled it over in my mind for a month or so. Again, I was impressed. I like it even more now that I've had time to play around with it.

It ticks both my boxes - deceiving and entertaining.

Well done Stephen.

You will love it Brett, you can do so much with it.

Visionary looks genuinely interesting. Can someone tell me if the cards are laminated (or are otherwise durable)?

Message: Posted by: JanForster (May 26, 2015 04:12AM)
They are, thick and very well printed; they will last a VERY long time, and the concept behind is ingenious and so versatile. But I know (having met Steve right now during the Mind Summit at Cologne) that he will come up with something incredible - please no questions, stay simply tuned... Jan

All orders are now in the hands of the postal services of various countries.

Thank you for your support guys.

Received mine yesterday and watched the DVD in the evening - all two hours of it! The concept is deviously clever, especially the parts of the routine that could be performed blindfolded. The production quality of the DVD is excellent and everything is very clearly explained.

Big news on The Visionary front.

A new ANY LANGUAGE version is imminent.

Message: Posted by: DutchFrank (Jun 7, 2015 09:29AM)
That IS big news!

Knowing Steve it is yet another WINNER!
Message: Posted by: Stephen Young (Jun 20, 2015 01:34AM)
The Visionary 2.0 Second Sight is now available as an Upgrade pack add-on to the original.
Later in the year it will be available as a stand-alone effect,
but I wanted to give people who supported the first vesion a chance to get ahead of the game with V 2

Now it can be performed in any country in any language (even sign language)
A method that will even fool those who own V1

If you have V1 you can buy just the Upgrade pack.
Or you can buy V1 and V2 together
Or wait until Hallowen for the V2 stand alone set.

Message: Posted by: Stephen Young (Jul 15, 2015 03:28AM)
V1 (together with V2 upgrade packs) is selling faster than anticipated and is almost sold out.
This means the release of a stand-alone V2 has had to be brought forward and should be ready September 1st.

I'll wait for the V2 stand alone version. The magicworld video was stunning!

What is the difference between first one and the 2.0 please?
Message: Posted by: mindmagic (Sep 3, 2020 06:26AM)
The original has large photographs with words on them. 2.0 and 3.0 are playing-card sized and only use symbols, so they are language neutral.

Message: Posted by: George Hunter (Sep 4, 2020 09:08AM)
It took some evolution in Steve's splendid imagination, but 3.0 is the keeper. It will play anywhere, in any language, for any age group, although it would lose some of its usefulness for audiences larger than parlor. it is best if people can see the symbols, however the video technology available to some performers could make it play for a vast audience.
