Topic: Handmade tarot card box, gaffed.
Message: Posted by: mcharisse (May 4, 2015 07:26AM)
Seems like there is a real shortage of tarot boxes on the market -- if you don't want a Celtic knot or a pentagram, you are about out of luck. So here's a handmade box to hold my favorite Rider-Waite cards, entirely handmade of pine and poplar plywood. Of course, I could make these with any images.

Here's the back of the box. The fool is on the front, seeking knowledge, and the magician is his guide.

Inside, just enough room for the deck, wrapped in silk, as is customary.
Message: Posted by: mcharisse (May 4, 2015 07:31AM)
The inside images are a meditation and love and obsession. By the way, been showing these to non magician friends, minus the gaffe, and no one wonders why there are pictures inside.

Whoops, here's that image

A side view.. Thanks for looking.

Very nice Marc, I may have to treat myself again! :)

Very nice! What is the gaff?
Message: Posted by: mcharisse (May 15, 2015 08:49AM)
Ettteilla tarot box, to hold an entire deck. This box is made of solid oak. No craft wood or plywood.

Inside the Etteilla box. The gimmick is non locking and will switch several cards.

Good question. Is it a sw*tching device like your other boxes? If so, how many cards can be sw*tched at any one time?
Message: Posted by: mcharisse (May 15, 2015 02:02PM)
Yes, same switch device. I'll post a picture later tonight in the crypt, but I've done six cards no problem, could probably do more. Check crypt later for details where we may speak more freely.

That's nice. I like it a lot. I make cigar box guitars and this have given me ideas.
Message: Posted by: mcharisse (May 19, 2015 11:46AM)
I started out with cigar boxes and still use them for a variety of boxes. Some of the smaller ones work for tarot decks especially nicely. I made a box for a tobacco store owner and now get first pick of the litter, so to speak.

Cool, I find them quite hard to get in the UK. Its cheaper to get them send here from US. Since people began using them for craft, people began charging outrageous prices for them, almost 10 quid a throw!

Those are beautiful. Can you say where you get the basic box?
Message: Posted by: mcharisse (May 20, 2015 01:21AM)
These boxes are entirely handmade out of poplar plywood and pine, or in the case of the ettealia box, oak. I use craft boxes for a lot of things, especially when size doesn't matter, but the standard tarot deck is an odd side, very hard to find a ready made box for, at least in my experience.

Someone' suggested a Marseille box,. The art is from the earliest complete Marseille deck by Jean Dodal, sometime around 1715.

The back of the box, the magician., the fools guide to knowledge.
Message: Posted by: mcharisse (May 20, 2015 02:30AM)
The box will wold a full 78 card deck and switch at least a half dozen cards.

Inside, again, the interplay of love and obsession.

Detail of aging and hardware. Solid brass hinges, aged. Thanks for looking,

I commissioned the peacock imagery. Marc exceeded my expectations on this! I just love it. I have had my tarot stored in a cheap bookstore box with peacocks on it for awhile and I think the symbolism is perfect for tarot. Great job, Marc!

Marc, the pin from one of the hinges is missing on my box. Is there a chance Id getting a replacement?

Marc has an Etsy store where he will also do custom work. I have 5 boxes he has made, including a switching box. I highly recommend his work! Plus, he's a super nice individual to work with.
