Topic: A magician won't tell you this...
Message: Posted by: mndude (Nov 22, 2015 05:04PM)
Reader's Digest has had a regular article called "13 things a _____ will not tell you ". And every time it reveals different secrets or inside information that you might hear from someone in the industry. For an example, for 13 things your Pizza Guy won't tell you include things like "We know when kids are prank-calling us." Or " I remember every customer who doesn't tip. I won't do anything to jeopardize my job, but shaking the soda on the next delivery would not be out of the question."

So if you were to make a list of "things a magician won't tell you" (not talking about magic secrets) what would you like to list?

1. Tricks are seldom as complex as they seem.
2. If a magician is talking to you, he is not telling you the truth.
3. If we let you examine it, you can bet it had zero to do with the trick.
4. Most of us can afford a large pizza.
5. We only know three card tricks as far as method goes, we just know 200 ways of presenting it.
6. We enjoy the look on your face when we fool you.
7. No we really don't know how all magic tricks are done.
8. We never pick anyone who looks too eager to be an assistant on stage.
9. Our assistant is more often more the real magician than we are.
10.If we tell you what is going to happen, you can bet your life that isn't what is going to happen.
11. Working with rabbits can be a pain.
12. Working with doves really is a big pain
13. We absolutely count on the fact that your brain will fill in gaps and after the fact you will remember things differently than they actually happened.

Great list.

14. If we ask you a question and make eye contact, our hands are very busy.

Great list above. I know orignal posted said 13 but iam just going to add a few.

15- Magicians spend a long time thinking about things you would not think twice about. How many pockets dose that coat have for example.
16- I don't know how or care how he got the phone in the bottle.

Here's one more.

17- Anything that seems accidental or incidental was probably planned and practiced hundreds of times.

Superb! All are soooo true :)

18 - If I summarize what just happened, it didn't
19 - when I say, "it is about to happen," it already has

20. If I tell you I'm not going to do something, I'm either doing it or I've done it already.

21. The easier it looks, the longer it took to make it look that way.

22. The hand is actually slower than the eye.

Then, how some there are so many BLACK EYES???

That's an awful old joke! --But, I'm awful old, too!

"Then, how come there are so many BLACK EYES???"

Because the brain is even slower than the hand!

I wish you would have explained that when I was in the third grade!

Oh! I guess that THAT is one those things a magician wont tell you...

23. When I say "Now you could have picked ANY card?" I am secretly laughing to myself.

24. If we let you shuffle the deck, there is good change you are shuffling 51 cards.
25. When we do a really fancy cut, it's not to make a deck "more" shuffled. (I know more false cuts than normal one's -.-')
26. Magician is incredibly broad term, just like musician. Just because a person is magician doesn't mean he can, want or will do the trick that guy in the TV did.

Re: #24: Makes sense! Most cardicians aren't playing with a full deck! hee hee

25. I'm not really trying to fool you, trick you or put my ego on the line against yours. I'm using my artistic skills to engage you, entertain you, and cause you to suspend your disbelief in an attempt to illicit that child like magical sense of wonder you once experienced freely and joyfully.

26: You couldn't believe the number of hours I practice just to show you this piece of magic...

27: You could believe even less the number of hours I THOUGHT about practicing this piece of magic before showing you!

28: If you knew how much money I spent on "magic" over the years, you'd suggest I get help.

On #2, Do you really feel that you are always not saying the truth?

I try my hardest to either avoid questions or answering in a round-about manner, but I don't usually lie as far as I'm aware.

29. The essence of magic is not to fool but to entertain.

30. Telling the spectator that they could have chosen "any" card or telling them "you could have stopped me anywhere in the deck" when they had no choice to begin with.
