Topic: The Official "Trick of the Year" thread- 2015
Message: Posted by: Jamie D. Grant (Dec 2, 2015 01:45PM)
Hiya Gang!

It's that time of year! Who will win The Houdin for 2015?!

First, why "Houdin?"

Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin is known as the father of modern magic. He was born Jean Eugene Robert and took the "Houdin" portion when he married the daughter of one of the few watchmakers of the time who was still using old world techniques; Jacques Francois Houdin. So, in honor of love and the adding of something to yourself to make you better (in his case he took the name), the nature of watchmaking, creating, tinkering (something I think we, as creators all do!) and the simple coolness of the name, it's what I came up with!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Eug%C3%A8ne_Robert-Houdin

Okay- What is your favourite effect that was released in 2015?

Please submit up to 3 entries and we'll tally them up on Feb.01. The winner will relieve a special Limited Edition "Anything Is Possible" bottle- "Trick Of The Year" trophy, called THE HOUDIN AWARD! Fun!

As, well, we now have "The Thurston Award"...

This award will awarded to a creator who created an effect in 2015 and who represents the true Spirit of Magic. Great customer service, kind, and a gift to the community.

And, gang, I know firsthand how much of an impact this thread will have on someone's life. Seriously. The prestige from this little thread will drive their sales through the roof. So please let's take this seriously, say nothing but nice things, and have fun! We're going to change someone's life!

RULES:
_____________

So if you follwed this thread last year, things got a little bit complicated. What started out as a fun thread between pals several years ago has turned into a HUGE event and, you know what? That's a good thing! It shows that the art of magic is alive and well and that we're all passionate about it!! I think next year we might end up going to some sort of panel judging but, for this last year, we'll keep it to the old voting system one final time and see how we do. That said, to help reduce drama (we can never eliminate it, I'm afraid) let's try and keep to the following...

Vote with Trick Name and the Creator Name for Trick of the Year (Houdin). Please submit 3 Entries.
Submit 1 Trick Name and Creator Name for Customer Service/Spirit/Kindness of the Year (Thurston

If you have been selected and want to encourage your pals to take part...

You must have 50+ posts on the Magic Café for your vote to count. If you're new, that gives you over 2 months to join in the community and share in our passion.

It is impossible to police or enforce a "no asking your clients, friends, etc to vote" rule and, personally, I think it's silly to ask people not to share their excitement. How can you have a contest if you're not allowed to talk about it?! On that note, I ask that you please...

Don't offer financial incentives.
Encourage people to vote for 3, not just one.
Limit the number of your announcements to 3 times.

I trust people (perhaps that's a fault, lol) but I also trust the voting public to choose what they truly feel is the best and not just what soemone tells them to do.

Lastly, this is a thread for JOY. Let me be clear- HAPPINESS! Any post that is not a vote or is something positive, I will ask for it to be deleted. There are other places on the Café (Right or Worng) for political disussions. But they won't be here.

Let's see how this goes!

I do not want to disturb, but I have to admit that I am simply not willing to vote. Each year there are a bunch of things they could deserve this title, but at the same time there are too many things you can not compare with each other. And the more expensive a trick is the less people will vote for it as they didn't purchase it. How can you compare a well done and useful prop like the SvenPad with a complex system like the CUPP or Scan3D? E. g., I use all three, but do not compare. I think it might make sense to vote for a book of the year, more comparable, but tricks??

A different story might be the vote for the Thurston Award although inventors of "cheaper" tricks might get in first... I fully agree that Craig Filicetti got awarded more than one time. But there are two other guys right now who would deserve this award easily: Cesar Alonso and Eric Samuels... who invented several unbelievable "systems" which are (thanks God) not for the masses. Jan

Understood - but as Jamie asked PLEASE try to all vote for 3 items.

Thanks!
So if we haven't bought much this year, should we vote based on a trailer and what looks cool?

Please read the rules again carefully gents. Jamie states "Please submit UP TO 3 entries and we'll tally them up on Feb.01". So no need to vote for three.

I think it's important people are not put off voting by this type of misinformation.

Jan is absolutely correct! It is impossible to compare.

Rubbish! If that's the case we may as well pack up and go home now. Why not join in the fun rather than ruin the party for everyone else?
Message: Posted by: saysold1 (Dec 13, 2015 10:53AM)
Jan brings up as usual good food for thought.

At this stage it seems like a nearly $400 product (Scan3D) is vying for top position and deservedly so. That actually disproves the notion that only less expensive products have a shot to win.

SCAN3d is not a mass market product (and I agree with the thanks god statement) and I would also hazard to guess that those like me who own such nice things might not necessarily want a huge spotlight on such a beautiful secret.

Cesar and Eric's items may in fact deserve heaps of praise but (because of the justifiably high price) have a more limited audience and less potential votes.

So these yearly beauty contests - like any contest - is imperfect.

But every year I look forward to reading through the thread as for me it is quite useful in pointing me towards many cool items that I was unaware of and may have missed. As I recall one of last year's winners (Inferno by my friend Bobbby Hasbun) was a book.

Contests are imperfect - but they can still be useful and fun. I always look forward to Jamie's yearly party.

I'm assuming many are voting for what they have obsevered a trick to do, not necisarily purchased, otherwise, all votes would be based on the handful of tricks everyone purchased this year.

I saw on another thread that people might not be mentioning The Xpert because it's a "reissue."
My humble opinion (which has absolutely no bias at all—just because it's my product, how could I possibly be biased even a smidge?) is that the video is a NEW item.

10 years ago, The Xpert was marketed as a booklet and gimmick in a plastic bag. And there were only four effects.
The 2015 release is a video with gimmick containing EIGHT effects plus a complete TUTORIAL for making your own gimmick.
It was a lot of work to put together and several years in the making, so I hope you'll find it was worth it.

With that said, here are a few purchases I'm glad I made this past year (I'm a little behind the times, so not everything came out in 2015, but they're new to me)—
1. Beyond Black—terrific novel about psychic entertainment by Hilary Mantel
2. Scryer's Black & White Book by Richard Webster
3. David Corsaro's Lecture Notes

Maybe we should be happy that products which cost hundreds of dollars will not become, with all due respect, TRICK OF THE YEAR.
Most of the time, well at least in the mentalism part of this forum, we want to keep things for ourself or at least "underground".
Almost everybody who is serious with developing their mentalism routines is aware of, for example, the beautiful stuff Greg puts out.
But do we want to share those products with the WHOLE magic community, such like newbies who have just started in magic and stumble on this thread?
(I am aware that there are advertisements for these products around, but the more low profile these products are, the better I think they are).

Please understand that I am not trying to bash a newcomer or a card magician because those guys will also have material that they hoped would not have been shared with the whole world just for the purpose of showing how good a product is.

Just strange to see how in about every topic of the Penny forum someone yells "this should be in inner" while in here we try to get attention to great products....

Updated Leaderboard! Dec.27

It's awesome to see a bunch of new people posting their choices! Just remember; you need 50 posts for your vote to count- but there is still lots of time to make posts, ask questions, and contribute all over the Café. If you don't, however, then your vote will be subtracted from the current tally. So, stay a while and keep joining in the fun!

And THANK YOU to everyone for keeping this so positive! We're really coming together on this!

I vote for Jeff McBride as well. His knowledge, passion for the art, and mentoring performers of all levels to improve in performing magic and mentalism (yes Jeff is quite versed in mentalism) is second to none. I remember during his public performance how the audience was awestruck with his showmanship, comedy, and his closing mentalism effect (memory demonstration). He is a wonderful ambassador of magic.

I agree, all of these "Best Of" polls are VERY FLAWED. They really need new rules and even categories. Mentalism books (and effects) are often not even known of by non-mentalism magicians, and sometimes "run away" with the votes. Or the other way around. There should be separate categories for magic types. In the case of the "Effect Category" why not a vote for Card Effect, Coin effect, Mentalism effect and "other" then take a winner from each category. Also, many people vote for books or effects that they have not purchased, just saw the trailer, read the hype and voted based on that (or to give a certain creator who's work they generally like a boost). So really, all my vote says, is that "I" like a large majority, bought a couple "best sellers" and enjoyed them. You could easily get those stats from polling sales numbers from distributors / retailers.

Question for all the mentalists posting their top three "tricks" here:

After years of insisting that mentalism is NOT magic, and that magicians should NEVER attempt to put mentalism into their magic acts ... indeed that magicians are the absolute BANE of mentalists everywhere - and after making magicians feel far less than welcome in your forum - how come you're all posting your favorite mentalism effect here hoping to have it declared the "TRICK of the Year"?

TRICK? ... I thought you all became apoplectic at the very thought of anything you do being thought of as a TRICK?
Message: Posted by: Stephen Young (Jan 2, 2016 04:51PM)
I sympathise with your comments Artie....to an extent.

It does seem sometimes that mentalists see themselves as different (which they may well be)
and/or better (which they certainly aren't IMHO)

I have long battled the elitism which you mention, even though I class myself as a mentalist.
I have had numerous contretemps with some big names in mentalism regarding this very fact.

Steve
Message: Posted by: Artie Fufkin (Jan 2, 2016 05:11PM)
You're right Stephen, I should have clarified "most mentalists" as opposed to "all mentalists". My mistake.
Message: Posted by: JanForster (Jan 2, 2016 06:30PM)
Although I wouldn't and didn't vote for anything anywhere, and it doesn't matter where I could vote, to a certain extend I am also with you Artie. I like good magicians, no doubt. But I think it is no problem if mentalists vote here for the best trick of the year. I personal do not know any mentalist who is not using also tricks. The trick might be just a tool in his hands and presentation wise secondary, but combined with a specific presentation. Even for a good magician the trick itself becomes less important, it is his presentation that hopefully creates some moments and feelings of magic. Not always, but often (some might think too often...) we find the same tools, completely different used. Myself I bought two or three magic tricks last year as I thought I could give them a completely different twist. Until now I couldn't, probably an error from my side, but then I wouldn't perform it. So, peace and fun in 2016 - the world got bigger problems to solve. Jan

Not sure what's happening here- but it's time to bring it back on track, I reckon! Are the "Of The Year" awards perfect? Of course not! Are any of us perfect? Of course not! But can we still have fun, help out people we love and admire, and bring happiness into lives instead of misery? Absolutely. 100%. You betcha.

So let's do it! Back to voting!

And, lastly, try to view this as a party. We're all having a blast! But if you're here and don't like the food or the music, you can always go find another one that better suits you! There's no reason to yell at the crowd in the living room how miserable you are- unless you're sending out a cry for help. And, if that is the case, please let us know that's what you're doing and we'll try to help you privately in any we can. We're all in this together.

Who will win for 2015? The results are close! Fun!

1. Shaun Robison's PWP - a massive advance for this underated utility
2. The Vault by David Penn - a classic effect brought right up to date
3. Cup Cards by will Gray - the best packet trick of the last decade

For the Thurston award I nominate:

Andi and Josh of Vanishing Inc for only selling effects they themsleves believe in. If only other dealers applied a similar filter before spamming these boards attempting to sell rubbish to all the magic trick cookie monsters.

Houdin:

In no particular order:

- Cube3 by Steven Brundage
- Visionary (all versions... but if I had to pick one I'd go with Visionary 2.0) by Stephen Young
- Tequila Hustler - Mark Elsdon

Of the tricks I purchased in 2015 these 3 are the only ones I'm actually using regularly. There is another routine by Mark Elsdon published this year which I haven't tried out yet (I'm working on it!), but I suspect that would get my vote if I had.

Thurston:

Stephen Young - A simple accident caused contact between Stephen and I along with a very generous kindness (on his behalf). Which then led to a great discussion of The Visionary 2.0.

These are two great utility devices for mentalists:

1) SVENPAD SUPREME - Brett Barry

I put the SVENPAD in first place because it is the more flexible, useful utility device of the two.

Amazebox is great for what it does, but its uses are somewhat more limited.

I don't think Cube 3 should be allowed to win given some of the material on the dvd was 'borrowed'. Or at least the other contributors should be named as winners. Either way I returned mine for a refund as a result.

Do you perhaps know which part was "borrowed"? Since my reason for voting for this trick are the "behind the back"-solve and the "bag"-solve. It would be a shame if I'm actually voting on the wrong creator plus I would be interested in the original work. Thank you.

Okay! 5 days to go! Let's get those votes in, and those vote counts past 50! The way I do the count is that for the current leaderboard, I've counted everyone's vote, no matter what their post count.

On Feb.01, I'll go back through the thread and subtract anyone who doesn't have at least 50 posts and any doubles I find. It takes a while, but I've found it to be the best system. So, for example, Svenpad Supreme by Brett Barry would actually have 48 votes and Amazebox by Mark Shortland would have 42 votes. This was done in an attempt to eliminate people from signing up just to vote for their pal- and to encourage people to take part in our awesome community that we're all a part of!

Every year for the past 5 years I've purchased the magic trick that wins this award....and I'm sure many other hobbyists do the same.

Thanks for making this such a great thread, everyone! There's only a few hours left to vote (Feb.01 was decided as the deadline in order to give people time to work with items that were released at the end of December) so we're almost there!

I'll announce the winner at noon (Pacific time) tomorrow! Good luck and remember that even if you only got a single vote, someone thinks that your work is the best they've seen all year. It's an honor, so feel great about it!

Svenpad Supreme by Brett Barry - the official winner of the 2015 HOUDIN AWARD

Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin is known as the father of modern magic. Born Jean Eugene Robert, he took the "Houdin" portion when he married the daughter of one of the few watchmakers of the time who was still using old world techniques; Jacques Francois Houdin. This award is named in honor of love and the adding of something to yourself to make you better (in his case, the name), the nature of watchmaking and experimenting (something I think we, as creators all do!) and the joy that doing something we love will always bring us.

And let’s not forget The Thurston Award!

For the second year in a row, Congratulations to…

Craig Filicetti - Craig is the official winner of the 2015 THURSTON AWARD

The Thurston Award is awarded to someone who has not only created a trick this current year but who has provided excellent customer service, honor to our art, or has shown themselves to be worthy of recognition even though their effect didn't win The Houdin. I hope that makes sense! It will also (hopefully) help usher in new creators with the mindset that how you treat your customers and are remembered is just as important as the effect you've created.

A massive SvenHug to all of you who voted for and/or purchased the SvenPad Supreme.

May the force be with all of you guys - this has been an amazing and fun journey :-)

Also big Café thank you to Jamie Grant - who works his tail off and expertly arranges this contest every year - just because he wants to give back.

As Jamie says, "Anything Is Possible"

Thank you to all of you who took a chance on an innocent little notepad ... and I hope to continue to earn your trust one pad at a time.

Congratulation all for your hard work this year and a big thank to Jamie for organizing it. I am looking at it every year, best way to check if I missed something very good that people really like .

For the record, though I only voted for Mentalist Symbol Pack, I have purchased several other fine tricks this year but haven't had time to play with them yet. That being said, I was just looking at Fobulous and upon reading the instructions I realized it's even more clever than I first thought. So a posthumous (?) vote for Fobulous.

LOL you can also still put a belated vote in for SvenPads - I checked tracking and your babies should arrive this week.

Take care and thank you Todd for your order :-)

What does a Sven pad do? I think I know is it like the Svengali pack of cards with a notepad instead because that's what I think it is

It can cleanly allow you to forc* anything you want. Hands off. Easily.

It's an infinitely powerful utility tool, rather than a trick.

Like a thumb tip.

Check out the long thread in latest and greatest section Karl - and I can gladly answer questions via PM.

Oh man - thank you for saying that!

We are still innovating. I couldn’t have done this without the encouragement of the late Bob Cassidy and Craig Fillicetti.
