Topic: I started with Blackstone

I was born in 1977 in the Cleveland, Ohio area. I don't have a recollection of receiving it as a gift, so I'm guessing I was 7 or 8 when I got this Blackstone magic set:

Maybe that's what got me interested, but I don't remember. I also recall seeing David Copperfield many times on television (and my parents eventually took me to see him live when he came to Cleveland). The second big magic gift was Penn and Teller's book Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends. I also recall seeing them on TV (trick truck, or trick Teller?) Then, at some point shortly after that, my father bought me a Silk Vanish---I had no idea how it worked until I opened it up. No way, I can't believe that actually works and people don't notice.... but it does and they don't.

I now live in California where I have three kids and make my living programming my own video games. Magic is for me now, as it has always been, a sometimes feverish hobby. I make a pilgrimage to Tannen's Magic Shop every once in a while when I'm in New York City.

More recently, I've become obsessed with watching Penguin trick ads and trying to figure out how the trick is done on my own (sometimes takes a week of thinking before an aha hits me), and then figuring out how to build it myself.

And this has led me to trying to invent my own tricks, which hasn't born much fruit as of yet, but I'm getting close to having a few good card tricks.

Welcome jasonrohrer,

I live in California too.

You don't have to be a pro. to love Magic.

At least you have a real job...programing Video Games LOL.

Well, it's not exactly a "real job," because I'm making my own stuff in my spare bedroom and selling it directly to fans.

I'm on the same tightrope as any other independent, creative person---making the coolest next thing I can make and hoping that people like it enough to pay for it.
