I really love the detail in this tunic (and others like it) from India:

larger image available here: Http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxNjAw/z/Yo0AAOSwawpXurgK/$_57.JPG

I'm watching a bunch of them. They're generally inexpensive- free shipping from India. They've got a great earthy authenticity, I find. I'm very impressed with these. I'll post a few more pics if I can.

Naturally, colour's a significant consideration. I'm trying to find some things I can mix and match. I've got shoes, already, that I think I'll go with.

I purchased a shirt I really! like (pre-owned) from a seller in Vegas, a few days ago:

and it's on its way, along with the purchased pants I mentioned in the Magical Pants thread (link below). I'm thinking about putting together a couple of outfits but may start with just a couple new pieces and also work with some things I already have. I've got a few things in mind, so more to follow...

See a bit about pants here:

"The main job of costume design in a production is to provide physical and emotional support to every actor through the clothing he or she will wear to enhance characterization. The costume must work onstage. This means it must provide comfort, flexibility and durability. At the same time the design must provide strong visual support of the story, concept and context of the play as a whole. It is my role to ensure that the costumes reflect the visual style of the production and help actors portray their characters on their journey through the play’s action.

I take my cues from the characters and their surroundings as written in the play, as well as from the stylistic choices of the production. In the same way that an actor builds upon the framework of traits and actions of his or her character in the story, I read what the character does and says for clues about what they might wear. I also need to think about how best to reflect a character’s evolution through the development of the story. Sometimes the character is best served by creating contrast between how a character behaves and what he or she looks like." http://artsalive.ca/collections/costumes/designer_role.php?lang=en

I was looking around last night and there's so much to choose from! I checked out some vintage pieces for reference. I'll put up some pics. I confirmed that the choices I've made so far are very much in keeping and on track. As I've stated elsewhere, I'm a treasure hunter, and while I'd like to be able to pick up some vintage pieces, I really feel like I've accomplished something at times I pick up something on target at a great price! Economical and efficient, the way many productions strive to operate. As a side note, those qualities are two reasons, I believe, one of my great theatre mentors, Stuart Morrison, used to send my sister and I to source props for our high school drama productions. :) You see, when he sent his son out on similar missions, his son would come back with things like $92.00 Makita drills and such that weren't on the list. Then, to add insult to the budget's injury, he would do things like proceed to drop that drill out of, I think it was, his back jeans pocket or something like that, from the top of a ladder, to the stage, on its nose. :heckno:  :bwink: But, perhaps I digress, once more. :) I will be back with pics of some very cool costume pieces that are currently inspiring me!

So far, I've kept to pants and shirts, since if you're wandering the woods, they tend to be more practical. But dresses could work for this set, too, and would perhaps emphasize a "goddess" vibe. Here are some vintage dresses that have caught my eye as reference and inspirational pieces:

There's a fine line here, in searching, because I want the outfit to work "across time". I want to emphasize my message as relevant throughout the ages and as currently significant, which it is. So, I don't want to get stuck at Woodstock. ;) I want connection, roots, earth, through time and now. So in searching, I want the hippie flower child look- it's rooted, but I don't want it over the top, too much, a distraction.

I need just enough to make it interesting, distinctive. I want current credibility- an authenticity. I think I'm on track so far.

The granny dress . . . . That brings me back!

Bare feet, granny dress in a simple print, no jewelry and a small, very simple wild flower or two in your hair.

Is that what you would be going for?
Message: Posted by: Stanyon (Jan 25, 2017 08:36AM)
Personally, I don't think I could make any of those work.

Cheers! ;)

Your description is close to what I'd go for, but I'd let the flowers on the dress do the decorating- I'm not keen on picking flowers anymore. Maybe a potted plant on the table. :)

Actually, I was thinking that the Floral Boho Hippie Bell Sleeve Festival Maxi looked pretty magical.

I think that the lace on the 70s LONG MAXI FOLK FESTIVAL BOHO made it too ornate.

I think that the Gunne Sax Jessica Festival Prairie PEACH Lace Apron Satin Ruffle Gown looks too much like a wedding dress (even if it is PEACH).

I think that the 60s 70s VELVETEEN Ethnic Boho/Hippie Festival Embroidered is beautiful and has clean lines, but it is much more formal than the print dresses - it depends on the look you are going for.

I also like the 60s 70s Peasant Prairie Folk Calico Floral Tiered Maxi Hippie Festival 100% Cotton. Informal, simple construction, colorful.

You should think about something that calls attention to your face. Since you do not want flowers, how about something else that is 'natural?' Maybe a found feather or feathers in your hair? Or a cameo on a hair clip?
Message: Posted by: magicalaurie (Jan 25, 2017 08:05PM)
Yes, I do like those bell sleeves, and the buttons are a nice detail.

I was thinking about what I could do with my hair, this afternoon.
I like your ideas! I do have a collection of found feathers. :) The cameo on a hair clip is a very nice idea, too.

That is a bracelet or armband
Message: Posted by: magicalaurie (Jan 26, 2017 03:35PM)
That armband/bracelet is very interesting, friend2cptsolo, where did you find it? Thanks for all your posts. I said this earlier regarding time:

"There's a fine line here, in searching, because I want the outfit to work 'across time'. I want to emphasize my message as relevant throughout the ages and as currently significant, which it is. So, I don't want to get stuck at Woodstock. I want connection, roots, earth, through time and now. I do, though, have a fondness for 1800s, turn of the century, early 1900s, and 70s styles. And "everything old is new again" so that's helpful. :)
You hit, too, on jacket style in one of your pics and that's something I was searching last night and had found a reference item for. I purchased a jacket today at the local thrift store for $5.00 that's in keeping. Another, for $6.00, I gave to my Mom. :) Pics to follow when I can get some nice shots. Thanks for picking up the conversation here! I appreciate the posts.

This was the jacket I found for reference:

Vintage Women Scully sz 14 brown leather suede western jacket coat

Here, I thought maybe I wouldn't want to go with suede, as a naturalist/conservationist, (English always with the "ists"! As magicalaurie, let's say!) and as per the picked flowers issue. ;) At the same time, I do own a suede jacket. The one pictured above would be a vintage item that's being reused. I'm a conservationist, but we all get by with help from each other- we're all connected and effect each other, and acknowledgement of that and appreciation and gratitude is where I'm really at, so suede wouldn't be a deal breaker. The coat I found isn't suede and that's consistent, still. Either way is in character. So, I could do the flowers, but I'd rather do the found feathers, you see?

I found that armband- I thought it looked a little Steampunk. :)
Message: Posted by: magicalaurie (Jan 26, 2017 06:32PM)
I'm not doing Steampunk, though. I've taken a look at it in the past and again just now and the problem I have with it is this: "Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk
I want authenticity and credibility. So, Steampunk won't fly. It's lots of fun and creative but I find it certainly muddies waters so it's just not my cup of tea. :giving:
Message: Posted by: 0pus (Jan 26, 2017 10:06PM)
Are you going for a "timeless/out of time" look?

Up until now, the simple dress, bare feet, feathers in hair, could have been any period from the Renaissance, colonial, frontier, hippie, hippie revival, contemporary or even future periods.

I think that the jacket/outerwear can be tricky. Is that going to be part of your performance costume? Have you considered a cloak, cape or untailored wrap (maybe with some kind of clasp or frog closure)?
Message: Posted by: magicalaurie (Jan 26, 2017 11:13PM)
Yes, I guess you could say timeless, or as I've stated "across time". Having some pieces that might be more specifically identified with a certain time period or region would be in character that way, especially if you consider the "everything old is new again" way things are brought back. The "vintage" 70s pieces for example were largely throw backs to earlier styles, as you've pretty well said.

As I've mentioned earlier and on the pants thread, one who walks through the woods in an explorer, gypsy, voyageur style would be in keeping with my character and what I do.

The term "goddess" was issued forth earlier, but I'm really much more grounded and practical than that, I think. I'm not a diva. I like REAL things. I do, though, have passion and determination and imagination, I'm a romantic, and I would call myself an artist, and have done so on occasion, some have called me magical (that's how I got my name ;) ), so mileage will vary depending on your definition of "goddess", I suppose. :)

The coat isn't necessarily something I'll use. I will take a look cloaks, etc. Thanks for your ideas.

What, specifically, do you mean by the jacket/outerwear being tricky?
Message: Posted by: 0pus (Jan 27, 2017 07:33AM)
I think that outerwear - other than very simple wraps - becomes period-specific. For some reason, virtually everybody is wearing the same coat during the cold seasons. Most recently, it is those Canada Goose coats. It becomes very difficult to identify a timeless classic. I don't think I can.

Even the suede jacket you like above looks relatively contemporary.

I was not thinking of an explorer/voyageur feeling for you, but more of a nymph/woodland spirit. Something vaguely ephemeral, feminine, connected to the natural world (something that 'manly men' wouldn't be able to articulate).
Message: Posted by: friend2cptsolo (Jan 27, 2017 07:35AM)
Yeah the armband is definitely a little steampunk thing but I thought it looked almost like a functional item an explorer would have but could also just be a jumping off point for a new idea, little accent pieces to the clothing.

Yeah I like that "across time" concept. Do you have like a story arc for your character? Time traveler?
Message: Posted by: magicalaurie (Jan 27, 2017 11:55AM)
That jacket style is a pretty classic one, I'd say. I'd agree the wraps might be more timeless, but they might also be of the time before buttons and sleeves. ;) The coat is practical. For performing, too, I think the coat would be much more practical. Bonus- it has pockets. But as I mentioned, it's in keeping if people are reminded of a certain time and place- I am trying to connect, "across time" as I've said.

The show is nature themed- I've spoken a little about it here, as posted above: https://magicalaurieblog.wordpress.com/

I'm looking for authenticity and credibility across time and now.

I have a woodland spirit, but I'm not a nymph. ;) I like the idea, maybe someone else would run with that, and it depends on your own interpretation and definition :) , but I'm a real person and like real things, as I said. The jacket would work well with pieces I've already acquired. I'll put up some pics later and compile to update.

All of your points have been valid and interesting, and I appreciate the discussion! So, thank you. Pics to follow. :)

Now, see this top pocket stitched together? This is what people do to women's clothes. What could she possibly need this pocket for? I'm fortunate, though in that there is a real pocket here. Often, women's jackets will have a pocket opening with NO POCKET! Clever Illusion? I don't think so! These pockets will be legitimized by myself shortly- ie. they will be opened! Just like in the good 'ol days! If we're going to have pockets, let's make them real ones, shall we? I say. :)

Not that I'm going specifically for this, but I'm a "naturalist", and found this article interesting. A little dramaturgy, then:

https://www.nps.gov/articles/breeches-blouses.htm

I'm interested more in "camp clothes", so I'll be looking into that since I've found the term and it might be helpful in a search. "Wool", "tweed", "wide leg", "vintage pants" have only gone so far, so far. :)

I'm really looking to build outfits that speak universally, across time. There's lots of freedom in it, but connectedness at the same time.
I'll start to sort things, too, into "Inspiration, Reference, Dramaturgy" and "Owned, Borrowed (in this case, I won't be borrowing, but I do have a couple of things that friends have given me, one in particular that I think I'll be using), Bought."

A couple things I have need very minor repairs, so there's that, too.

And the elusive shoes will be revealed, as well...

I appreciate your thoughts, so please feel free to share them with me. :)

I just pulled the mesh over a little and sewed through the holes to the inside of the shirt along the buttons where there was already stitching.

The other item was a shirt sleeve that had a separation from getting caught on the clip attaching a servante (which I don't use!) to the back of the table when I performed in the close-up competition at the World Magic Seminar in 2010. Haven't fixed it 'til now, because I wasn't sure how to go about it. Stitched it up last night. Will see what happens. I deleted the before pic :hmm: and haven't taken a repaired photo yet because I want to do a couple more things (trim edge with pinking shears and hope it won't fray any further!)

Just adding some "plain crochet"- see what that does? Just lovely. A little detail.

They've inspired me, too, to learn how to make some of these kind of things. I do crochet and made myself a vest last year- I'll put up a pick.
I mainly need to learn how to do sleeves. ;) I've downloaded some free patterns, specifically from a company that allows you to sell the items you make with their patterns. I don't follow patterns very closely anyway, since my crochet stitch repertoire is limited and I like to do my own thing, alot. I made my sister a blanket with dragonflies on it- no pattern, just make a dragonfly there, you know the basic features. :)

I found some cameo hair clips, too. To me, they give a kind of heavier, almost "haunted" vibe. That might just be connotation and context personal to me. I'm not sure why I get that vibe from them, but I think I'm looking for something lighter. I did find some pretty ones that came across somewhat lighter, so  I also came across a bunch with skulls on them, so... ;) I do think there might be a little redundancy and self consciousness they'd present, maybe, though. What do you think? There are some very cool animal ones that I really like that I have no problem with at all, of course. :bwink:

Reminds me a little of this girl ;) :

I never wore white or anything close to it much back in the day, cause it would have ended up... well, you can do the math.

Without looking too closely, the girl on the bottom of page 2 comes across a little dusty looking. ;) Cool! I think that's reversed quite a lot on closer inspection but, the tones in the pic convey that to me on first glance, and her hair is perfect! Frame of reference, maybe. ;)

I do remember wearing a mexican style embroidered tunic at least a couple times a ways back. I will wear this stuff now- I wasn't keen on dresses back then, though I vaguely remember wearing a smocked spaghetti strap sundress one day and playing in a field of long hay/grass with my sister at one my Dad's cousins' we used to see quite a bit of.

I will wear these things now, hayfield, or bush, or mud, or... you get the idea. :) I told my sister we need to wear the things that girl's wearing on page 2 on our next hike through my Dad's property. I've got a few pics/video you can consider as part of the background/dramaturgy for magicalaurie. :)

My appreciation of embroidery goes back. I don't know if the shorts pictured are the ones but it's highly possible. I remember having a cool pair of cut offs and referring my sister to how cool the sun and rainbow on the back pocket was. She agreed, of course. And my grandmother was into knitting, crocheting, lace doily making, and such... as grandmothers were in the 70s and 80s, you know...

friend, I want to thank you for this suggestion. I don't think I'll be making an armband, but I like those bottles very much and actually found some this past weekend in the dollarama that just opened here. 6 for $1.25!

On a side note, I've been steering away from buy clothing from China, but readily purchase stuff from the dollar store- and it's pretty much all made in China!
Thing is, China is making clothes in the styles I'm looking for. They are making stuff people want, go figure! Even purchasing from sellers in the USA, one is quite likely to end up with an item that was made in China. Does not purchasing from China help conditions in China? I don't really think so. Feel free to discuss if you like, it's all connected. It's on topic.

I'll be back with some pics. I've been working on the crocheting, too. Got a great book from the library! :)

Edit- Referring back to the photo above- is that a little axe tied on there? I had a dream last night/this morning that I was at my Dad's and someone was coming into the yard, I think, and I picked up a heavy axe before going out to see what they wanted. :heckno: :hysteric:
See, I've been thinking about that pic, but forgot about the axe, or maybe remembered afterall! ;) Interesting.

I'm looking for finer yarn, too, to do these in, (and my Aunt gave me a bunch on the weekend that I think will work nicely- she's done some fine crocheting too, just the kind of stuff I really like and I told her so!) but here are some practice runs:

Here's a little more dramaturgy. I think I'm going to post a complete costume design for this set on my blog. Here's a nice piece, though, for now. (a photo of a photo- I'm waiting for a scanned copy.) I spent a fair amount of time "across the river" when I was a kid. Often when my parents and my sister and I went there to check on the cattle or whatever, we'd be greeted this way :beatingheart: :

There were I think about 11 of these guys there in my very early years. I remember when Dad sold Maybel, who was gray, and Dainty Sue (bay), and Princess, who is pictured on the right in this photo. The palamino brothers Mary's Boy and Golden Boy are also pictured, which one is which I'm not sure I ever got a handle on. :) They were lovely, though. My sister and I would find ourselves in barnyard rather suddenly surrounded by some rather tall but very friendly and inquiring individuals when we'd step out and they were around. In the mornings, we used to ride bareback together down to the river and back on the eldest matriarch, Gay, when were quite young. Dad would lead her there and back. Tracey and I would alternate riding in front or back.

Here's a dress I recently made from thrifted items- a man's shirt, a curtain, and lace trim. I crocheted edgings on the collar, button panel, and sleeves.

More pics to follow but I'm off to check out Ellen's game of games. :)

I cut the regular collar to make a banded (mandarin) collar, and removed the short sleeves. I crocheted ecru edgings for the collar, sleeves, and button panel.

I stitched lace trim by hand (no machine!) to the pocket, and bottom shirt and skirt edges.

I stitched the hems by hand as well and attached the shirt to the skirt that way, as well. Slow going, but it works well for me and I enjoy it.

Master Zorro insisted on helping me make this dress before he passed January 5, 2018 at the age of almost 19 years.

One of my earliest memories of Zorro is of meeting him in the isolation room at the local Humane Society. I worked there for 3 months as a paid staff member before leaving. It was a kill shelter at the time and its machinations didn't jive well with me at the time.
When Zorro came down with diarrhea, I was advised to take him home to prevent him being euthanized. He recovered, in my bathroom, with supportive care and a routine deworming.

Zorro was an ambasador from the start. He was trapped as a young kitten and brought to the shelter. I recall him sitting in the middle of a basket of his comrades ( a bunch of orange and white lovelies). Zorro licked them reassuringly on the head, often.

My family has given sanctuary to many cats through the years, and in his time here, Zorro has embraced each with joy. Our recent arrivals all know him as "Uncle Zorro" and his attention was a fancy feather in each one's cap, indeed.

Just to clarify, I meant the "girl with style" :) at the bottom of page 3. I guess I didn't realize there were that many pages here. :)

To update a little, I picked up a pair of brown wool pants at the thrift shop for half price ($2.00 Cdn) a few weeks back.

Also, some of my nature photography is currently on display at the library's art corridor til the 21st. Helps to have a Scary Librarian sister in this town, indeed. :) I'm going to take my camera and see if I can film a bit of a virtual tour for those who aren't local. It's tough with the reflections from the glass in the frames, but it will give the gist, I think.

So, I've been busking, musically, pretty steadily during the warm seasons since last year. I play old songs because they're public domain, and I love period work. This year I've added a Celtic flair with tin whistle, too. So, I may have gotten a bit away from the "current credibility". Or not- a lady who saw me walking to the market a couple weeks ago (didn't go last week because it was pouring rain) said she liked my outfit, so there's likely some current credibility, especially since it is now right now. ;)

My sister snapped a pic for me in that "outfit" after I met Apollo, a shy wirefox terrier who posed most graciously, indeed.

Tomorrow, I'll be bringing the vintage chair with antique needlepoint cushion I found for $10.00 a few months ago. And I'll be wearing the "outfit" I was busking in last year when a spectator asked me if I was French! :)

My sister shared this with me on facebook last night and said she thought of me when she saw it. :hysteric: Somewhat inspiring. See the wheels turning in these costumes!
